From a retrospective, cohort study of 205 patients diagnosed with full-thickness tears of the rotator cuff, we determined, using
Osteotomies are commonly carried out in orthopaedic surgery, particularly in limb reconstruction. Complications are uncommon provided that sufficient care is taken and a sound technique used. We describe three cases of formation of false aneurysm after osteotomy, with acute, delayed and asymptomatic onset. The diagnosis was supported by
The primary aim of this study was to determine if delayed clavicular fixation results in a greater risk of operative complications and revision surgery. A retrospective case series was undertaken of all displaced clavicular fractures that underwent plate fixation over a ten-year period (2007 to 2017). Patient demographics, time to surgery, complications, and mode of failure were collected. Logistic regression was used to identify independent risk factors contributing towards operative complications. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to determine if a potential ‘safe window’ exists from injury to delayed surgery. Propensity score matching was used to construct a case control study for comparison of risk.Aims
Patients and Methods
The imaging techniques available to aid the diagnosis of ruptures of tendo Achillis, the rotator cuff and the tendon of tibialis posterior in rheumatoid patients are well described. However, ruptures of tendon or muscle at other sites are uncommon and may be overlooked. Diagnosis is often made by localised tenderness, swelling and a lack of active movement associated with a palpable defect. Clinical examination may be inconclusive and can be aided by imaging studies. We report two cases in which ruptures of a tendon were suspected, and
We studied the effect of full and partial weight-bearing on venous peak velocity in the legs of 73 subjects. We used colourflow Duplex
The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of surgical repair to conservative treatment and subacromial decompression for the treatment of chronic/degenerative tears of the rotator cuff. PubMed, Cochrane database, and Medline were searched for randomized controlled trials published until March 2018. Included studies were assessed for methodological quality, and data were extracted for statistical analysis. The systematic review was conducted following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines.Aims

We report the natural course of Baker’s cysts following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) at short- and mid-term follow-up. In this prospective case series, 105 TKA patients were included. All patients who received surgery had a diagnosis of primary osteoarthritis and had preoperatively presented with a Baker’s cyst. Sonography and MRI were performed to evaluate the existence and the gross size of the cyst before TKA, and sonography was repeated at a mean follow-up time of 1.0 years (0.8 to 1.3; short-term) and 4.9 years (4.0 to 5.6; mid-term) after TKA. Symptoms potentially attributable to the Baker’s cyst were recorded at each assessment.Aims

Magnetic resonance imaging was performed on 28 patients with suspected calcaneal tendon injury prior to treatment. None of the patients were involved in competitive sports. All underwent clinical examination, some had had
We describe five patients, seen since 1984, with posterior shoulder pain and isolated wasting and weakness of the infraspinatus. In four of these a ganglion in the spinoglenoid notch was demonstrated by MRI and in one recent case
In severe forearm injuries, the diagnosis of disruption of the interosseous membrane is frequently delayed and sometimes missed, giving difficulties in the salvage of forearm stability. We studied the structure and function of the interosseous membrane in 11 cadaver preparations, using mechanical and histological analysis. Seven of the specimens tested in uniaxial tension sustained a mid-substance tear of the central band of the membrane at a mean peak load of 1038 ± 308 N. The axial stiffness was 190 ± 44 N/mm with elongation to failure of 10.34 ± 2.46 mm. These results provide criteria for the evaluation of reconstructive methods. A preliminary clinical investigation of the use of
