Introduction. The objective of this study was to determine if a synthetic bone
substitute would provide results similar to bone from osteoporotic
femoral heads during in vitro testing with orthopaedic
implants. If the synthetic material could produce results similar
to those of the osteoporotic bone, it could reduce or eliminate
the need for testing of implants on bone. Methods. Pushout studies were performed with the dynamic hip screw (DHS)
and the DHS Blade in both cadaveric femoral heads and artificial
bone substitutes in the form of polyurethane foam blocks of different
density. The pushout studies were performed as a means of comparing
the force displacement curves produced by each implant within each
material. Results. The results demonstrated that test material with a density of
0.16 g/cm. 3. (block A) produced qualitatively similar force
displacement curves for the DHS and qualitatively and quantitatively
similar force displacement curves for the DHS Blade, whereas the
test material with a density of 0.08 g/cm. 3. (block B)
did not produce results that were predictive of those recorded within
the osteoporotic cadaveric femoral heads. Conclusion. This study demonstrates that synthetic material with a density
of 0.16 g/cm. 3. can provide a good substitute for cadaveric
osteoporotic femoral heads in the testing of implants. However we
do recognise that no synthetic material can be considered as a definitive
substitute for bone, therefore studies performed with artificial
bone substrates may need to be validated by further testing with

This study is a prospective, non-randomized trial for the treatment of fractures of the medial malleolus using lean, bioabsorbable, rare-earth element (REE)-free, magnesium (Mg)-based biodegradable screws in the adult skeleton. A total of 20 patients with isolated, bimalleolar, or trimalleolar ankle fractures were recruited between July 2018 and October 2019. Fracture reduction was achieved through bioabsorbable Mg-based screws composed of pure Mg alloyed with zinc (Zn) and calcium (Ca) ( Mg-Zn0.45-Ca0.45, in wt.%; ZX00). Visual analogue scale (VAS) and the presence of complications (adverse events) during follow-up (12 weeks) were used to evaluate the clinical outcomes. The functional outcomes were analyzed through the range of motion (ROM) of the ankle joint and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score. Fracture reduction and gas formation were assessed using several plane radiographs.Aims
Methods
The aim of this study was to review the current evidence and future application for the role of diagnostic and therapeutic ultrasound in fracture management. A review of relevant literature was undertaken, including articles indexed in PubMed with keywords “ultrasound” or “sonography” combined with “diagnosis”, “fracture healing”, “impaired fracture healing”, “nonunion”, “microbiology”, and “fracture-related infection”.Objectives
Methods
Static radiostereometric analysis (RSA) using implanted markers is considered the most accurate system for the evaluation of prosthesis migration. By using CT bone models instead of markers, combined with a dynamic RSA system, a non-invasive measurement of joint movement is enabled. This method is more accurate than current 3D skin marker-based tracking systems. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of the CT model method for measuring knee joint kinematics in static and dynamic RSA using the marker method as the benchmark. Bone models were created from CT scans, and tantalum beads were implanted into the tibia and femur of eight human cadaver knees. Each specimen was secured in a fixture, static and dynamic stereoradiographs were recorded, and the bone models and marker models were fitted to the stereoradiographs. Objectives

Lengthening osteotomies of the calcaneus in children are in general
grafted with bone from the iliac crest. Artificial bone grafts have
been introduced, however, their structural and clinical durability
has not been documented. Radiostereometric analysis (RSA) is a very
accurate and precise method for measurements of rigid body movements including
the evaluation of joint implant and fracture stability, however,
RSA has not previously been used in clinical studies of calcaneal
osteotomies. We assessed the precision of RSA as a measurement tool
in a lateral calcaneal lengthening osteotomy (LCLO). LCLO was performed in six fixed adult cadaver feet. Tantalum
markers were inserted on each side of the osteotomy and in the cuboideum.
Lengthening was done with a plexiglas wedge. A total of 24 radiological
double examinations were obtained. Two feet were excluded due to
loose and poorly dispersed markers. Precision was assessed as systematic
bias and 95% repeatability limits.Objectives
Methods
There remains conflicting evidence regarding cortical bone strength
following bisphosphonate therapy. As part of a study to assess the
effects of bisphosphonate treatment on the healing of rat tibial
fractures, the mechanical properties and radiological density of
the uninjured contralateral tibia was assessed. Skeletally mature aged rats were used. A total of 14 rats received
1µg/kg ibandronate (iban) daily and 17 rats received 1 ml 0.9% sodium
chloride (control) daily. Stress at failure and toughness of the
tibial diaphysis were calculated following four-point bending tests. Objectives

The most concerning infection of allografts and operative procedures
is methicillin resistant An iontophoresis cell was set up with varying concentrations
of Vancomycin within the medulla of a section of sheep tibia, sealed
from an external saline solution. The cell was run for varying times,
Vancomycin concentrations and voltages, to gain information on optimisation
of conditions for impregnating the graft. Each graft was then sectioned
and dust ground from the exposed surface. The dust was serially
washed to extract the Vancomycin and concentrations measured and
plotted for all variables tested.Objectives
