Objectives

We aimed first to summarise minimal clinically important differences (MCIDs) after total hip (THR) or knee replacement (TKR) in health-related quality of life (HRQoL), measured using the Short-Form 36 (SF-36). Secondly, we aimed to improve the precision of MCID estimates by means of meta-analysis.

Methods

We conducted a systematic review of English and non-English articles using MEDLINE, the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register (1960–2011), EMBASE (1991–2011), Web of Science, Academic Search Premier and Science Direct. Bibliographies of included studies were searched in order to find additional studies. Search terms included MCID or minimal clinically important change, THR or TKR and Short-Form 36. We included longitudinal studies that estimated MCID of SF-36 after THR or TKR.

The use of intraoperative navigation and robotic surgery for minimally invasive lumbar fusion has been increasing over the past decade. The aim of this study is to evaluate postoperative clinical outcomes, intraoperative parameters, and accuracy of pedicle screw insertion guided by intraoperative navigation in patients undergoing lumbar interbody fusion for spondylolisthesis. Patients who underwent posterior lumbar fusion interbody using intraoperative 3D navigation since December 2021 were included. Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and Short Form Health Survey-36 (SF-36) were assessed preoperatively and postoperatively at 1, 3, and 6 months. Screw placement accuracy, measured by Gertzbein and Robbins classification, and facet joint infringement, measured by Yson classification, were assessed by intraoperative Cone Beam CT scans performed at the end of instrumentation. Finally, operation time, intraoperative blood loss, hospital stay, and screw insertion time were evaluated. This study involved 50 patients with a mean age of 63.7 years. VAS decreased from 65.8±23 to 20±22 (p<.01). ODI decreased from 35.4%±15 to 11.8%±14 (p<.01). An increase of SF-36 from 51.5±14 to 76±13 (p<.01) was demonstrated. The accuracy of “perfect” and “clinically acceptable” pedicle screw fixation was 89.5% and 98.4%, respectively. Regarding facet violation, 96.8% of the screws were at grade 0. Finally, the average screw insertion time was 4.3±2 min, hospital stay was 4.2±0.8 days, operation time was 205±53 min, and blood loss was 169±107 ml. Finally, a statistically significant correlation of operation time with hospital stay, blood loss and placement time per screw was found. We demonstrated excellent results for accuracy of pedicle screw fixation and violation of facet joints. VAS, ODI and SF-36 showed statistically significant improvements from the control at one month after surgery. Navigation with intraoperative 3D images represents an effective system to improve operative performance in the surgical treatment of spondylolisthesis

Is Non-Weight-Bearing Necessary? (INWN) is a pragmatic multicentre randomised controlled trial comparing immediate protected weight-bearing (IWB) with non-weight-bearing cast immobilisation (NWB) following ankle fracture fixation (ORIF). This trial compares; functional outcomes, complication rates and performs an economic analysis to estimate cost-utility. IWB within 24hrs was compared to NWB, following ORIF of all types of unstable ankle fractures. Skeletally immature patients and tibial plafond fractures were excluded. Functional outcomes were assessed by the Olerud-Molander Ankle Score (OMAS) and RAND-36 Item Short Form Survey (SF-36) taken at regular follow-up intervals up to one year. A cost-utility analysis via decision tree modelling was performed to derive an incremental cost effectiveness ratio (ICER). A standard gamble health state valuation model utilising SF-36 scores was used to calculate Quality Adjusted Life Years (QALYs) for each arm. We recruited 160 patients (80 per arm), aged 15 to 94 years (M = 45.5), 54% female. Complication rates were similar in both groups. IWB demonstrated a consistently higher OMAS score, with significant values at 6 weeks (MD=10.4, p=0.005) and 3 months (MD 12.0, p=0.003). Standard gamble utility values demonstrated consistently higher values (a score of 1 equals perfect health) with IWB, significant at 3 months (Ẋ = 0.75 [IWB] / 0.69 [NWB], p=0.018). Cost-utility analysis demonstrated NWB is €798.02 more expensive and results in 0.04 fewer QALYs over 1 year. This results in an ICER of −€21,682.42/QALY. This negative ICER indicates cost savings of €21,682.42 for every QALY (25 patients = 1 QALY gain) gained implementing an IWB regime. IWB demonstrates a superior functional outcome, greater cost savings and similar complication rates, compared to NWB following ankle fracture fixation

Previous studies revealed the close relation of anxiety and low back pain. Among people with chronic low back pain, anxiety is the most commonly reported mental disorder. Thus, in the literature, there are several studies considering the anxiety as a risk factor for chronic low back pain. The authors also documented a significant differences between sexes in anxiety and quality of life due to low back pain. US National Institute of Mental Health reports that the lifetime prevalence of an anxiety disorder is 60 % higher in women than in men and that the onset, severity, clinical course, and treatment response of anxiety disorders differ significantly in women. In addition, literature has showed that women may have a worse quality of life when they have low back pain. University students may undergo an undue amount of stress, with negative outcomes in terms of academic resuşts and personal, emotional or health, consequences. Moreover, stress can be experienced at different time periods, not only during university life, but also before, during the transition from undergraduate to professional level, and after, during the transition to the life work. After all these literature knowledge, we designed the study to compare the anxiety and quality of life levels of female and male specifically university students with low back pain aged between 18–26. In this study, 100 female and male university students with low back pain aged between 18–26 were included. The low back pain level were measured by Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and the disability level due to the pain was measured by Revised Oswestry Low Back Pain Disability Questionnaire (ODI). Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) was used to evaluate the anxiety level and also, Short Form 36 survey (SF-36) was used to understand the quality of life for subjects. These questionnaires were asked to participants on online platform via Google Forms between March 2020 and May 2020. SPSS Version 25.0 program was used for statistical analyses. The result of the study showed that there was a statistically significant difference between female and male students on anxiety levels (p<0.05). There were no statistically differences between female and male students on ODI and VAS (p>0.05). In female group, BAI and “Physical function” and “General Health” subgroups of SF-36 have negative correlations (p<0.05). When we correlated BAI and all subgroups of SF-36 in male group, the statistical results were showed that negative correlation with all subgroups (p<0.05) except “Energy and Fatigue” subgroup (p>0.05). We conclude that female university students with low back pain have higher anxiety levels than male students. Future studies can work on young students to cope with the psychological problems for well-being

Introduction and Objective. Ceramic on Ceramic bearings in Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) afford a low friction coefficient, low wear rates and extreme hardness. Significant complications include hip squeak, ceramic fracture and poor polyethylene performance in revision procedures due to imbedding of abrasive microscopic ceramic fragments. We report on the results of this bearing at a minimum of 10 years. Materials and Methods. A single-centre retrospective review of 449 THAs was performed. Primary outcome measures included aseptic revision and all-cause revision rates at a minimum of 10 years post operatively. Evaluation of functionality was performed with WOMAC and SF-36 scores which were performed pre-operatively and at intervals of 6 months, one year, 2 years, 5 years and 10 years post operatively. Results. There was a 6.2% (n=28) all-cause and 5.3% (n=24) aseptic revision rate for ceramic on ceramic total hip arthroplasty at minimum of 10 years with a mean time to revision 4.8 years (range 2 months − 11.6 years). Notably, there were 2 revisions for ceramic head fracture, one for ceramic liner fracture, 3 for aseptic loosening and 3 revisions for squeaking. Pain of unknown origin was the most common reason for revision. There was an improvement in postoperative WOMAC scores from a mean of 59.8 (range 15–95) pre-operatively to a mean of 15.6 (range 0–78) at 10 years. Conclusions. This study showed good functional outcomes but high revision rates for CoC THA at a minimum of 10 years. The role for CoC bearings in THA has been called into question in recent years and may continue to decline in popularity, even in younger patients. Further large scale studies are important to assess the long-term outcomes of this bearing surface

Introduction and Objective. Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis (SCFE) is one of the most common hip disorders in children and is characterized by a proximal femoral deformity, resulting in early osteoarthritis. Several studies have suggested that SCFE patients after in situ fixation show an altered gait pattern. Early identification of gait alterations might lead to earlier intervention programs to prevent osteoarthritis. The aim of this study is to analyse gait alterations in SCFE patients after in situ fixation compared to typically developed children, using the Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment (CAREN) system. Materials and Methods. This is a cross-sectional, multi-center case-control study in the Netherlands. Eight SCFE patients and eight age- and sex-matched typically developed were included from two hospitals. Primary outcomes were kinematic parameters (absolute joint angles), studied with gait analysis using statistical parametric mapping (SPM). Secondary outcomes were spatiotemporal parameters, the Notzli alpha angle, muscle activation patterns (EMG), and clinical questionnaires (VAS, Borg CR10, SF-36, and HOOS), analyzed using non-parametric statistical methods. Results. Patients (mean BMI=28±9 kg/m. 2. ) showed altered gait patterns, with significantly increased external hip rotation and decreased downward pelvic obliquity during the pre-swing phase of the gait cycle compared to typically developed (mean BMI=22±3 kg/m. 2. ). Walking speed, cadence, % stance time, and step length were reduced in SCFE patients. Coefficient of variances of cadence, stance time, and step length were increased. Patients had a mean alpha angle of 64, SD=7.9. Clinical questionnaires showed that general health (SF-36) was 80±25, energy/fatigue (SF-36) was 67±15, pain (VAS) was 0±1.5, and total HOOS score was 85±18. Conclusions. SCFE patients after in situ fixation appear to have developed a compensation mechanism, showing slight alterations in gait parameters, good general health, little functional limitations of the hip, and no self-reported pain. Cam deformities, altered joint loading, and this compensation mechanism might influence long-term early osteoarthritis. BMI reduction should be implemented in care plans, as obesity might also play a role in unfavorable long-term outcomes

Background. Functional outcomes of conservatively managed, valgus impacted proximal humeral fractures are poor. Operative fixation can improve results but can be technically challenging. We prospectively assessed outcomes following fixation of valgus unstable proximal humeral fractures with a novel hybrid fixed angle blade plate, at a minimum of 12 months follow up. Methods. A new hybrid fixed angle blade plate design (Fx Plate, Exactech, Gainesville, USA) was used by the senior author to treat patients with displaced and potentially valgus unstable proximal humeral fractures, at our institution between November 2012 and March 2014. The study was approved by the research and development department. Outcomes were prospectively assessed using the Oxford and Constant shoulder scores and quality of life was assessed using the SF-36 questionnaire. Radiographs were taken at regular intervals to assess fracture healing. Results. In total 12 patients were identified and included in the study. All patients had comminution of the medial calcar, with potentially valgus unstable fracture patterns. Six of the patients had two-part displaced fractures, whereas six had three and four-part fractures. One patient died for reasons unrelated to surgery and three others were lost to follow up. Average follow up after surgery was 15.4 months (Range 12–20 months). At final follow up the average Oxford Shoulder Score was 41 (35 to 48) and Constant Score 73 (60 to 87), indicating a good functional outcome of the operated side. The average physical and mental component scores of the SF-36 questionnaire were 49 and 52 respectively, suggesting a good overall quality of life. Radiographs, taken at final follow up, confirmed fracture union in all cases. No significant complications occurred following surgery. Conclusions. Patients with displaced, potentially valgus unstable, proximal humeral fractures remain a challenging cohort to treat. Our results, however, indicate good functional and radiographic outcomes when using a novel hybrid fixed angle blade plate

Summary Statement. A prospective randomised evaluation of primary TKA utilizing patient specific instruments demonstrated great accuracy of bone resection, improved sagittal alignment and the potential to improve functional outcomes and reduce operating room costs when compared to standard TKA instrumentation. Introduction. Patient specific instruments (PSI), an alternative to standard total knee arthroplasty (TKA) technology, have been proposed to improve the accuracy of TKA implant placement and post-operative limb alignment. Previous studies have shown mixed results regarding the effectiveness of PSI. The purposes of this study were (1) to evaluate the accuracy of the pre-operative predicted PSI plan compared to intra-operative TKA resection measurements, (2) to compare patient-reported outcome measures of PSI and standard TKA patients, and (3) to compare the incremental cost savings with PSI. Patients and Methods. This randomised, prospective pilot study of 19 patients undergoing primary TKA with a cruciate-retaining cemented prosthesis (NexGen, Zimmer Inc.) was conducted by a single high-volume arthroplasty surgeon (DCA). Patients were randomised to PSI or standard instrumentation. Patients randomised to the PSI cohort received a pre-operative knee MRI for PSI fabrication using Zimmer proprietary software. 10 standard TKA and 9 PSI TKA were completed. Pre-operative baseline SF-36 and WOMAC scores were collected. Operative data collected included operating room times, implant details, femoral (medial/lateral distal and posterior) and tibial (medial/lateral) cut thicknesses, and number of instrument trays used. Hospitalization data collected included length of stay, blood loss, drain output, and transfusion requirements. Follow-up occurred at 2 weeks, 6–8 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year, with SF-36 and WOMAC scores collected at each time point. Routine radiographic analysis was carried out in both cohorts. Extensive financial data was collected including costs of operating room use and anesthesia, implants, and hospitalization. Statistical analyses included t-tests for continuous variables and chi-square tests for categorical variables. Results. All femoral and tibial implant sizes used during TKA matched the component sizes predicted by the PSI software. Flexion gap bone resection (posterior medial/lateral femoral cuts) was extremely accurate (<1 mm on average) when compared with PSI predictions. PSI proximal tibial bone resection was also extremely accurate and within 1 mm on average of predicted values. Sagittal plane tibial component posterior slope in PSI TKA was significantly more accurate (7.33 degrees) in comparison to standard instrumentation (4.20 degrees) (p<0.025). No significant differences in coronal mechanical limb alignment existed between the two cohorts (p>0.05). There were no differences in operating room times, length of stay, or transfusions between the two groups. PSI patients used 4 fewer instrument trays per case (p<0.0001). There were no significant differences in functional outcome scores between the two groups (p>0.05). Discussion/Conclusion. PSI TKA demonstrated outstanding accuracy in bone resection when compared with the custom operative plan. There was no difference in post-operative coronal limb alignment or individual component alignment between the two groups, but an improvement in tibial component alignment in the sagittal plane in the PSI cohort was statistically significant. The number of instrument trays in PSI TKA's were significantly less than standard TKA which led to less cost for instrument sterilization and assembly, and quicker room set-up. PSI instrumentation resulted in accurate bone resection and appropriate limb and component alignment after primary TKA in this prospective randomised evaluation

Background. The controversy concerning the benefits of unisegmental cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) over anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is still open because some randomised clinical trial (RTC) comparing ACDF with CDA have been highly inconclusive. Most of these studies mixed disc prosthesis with dissimilar kinematic characteristics. To date, a compilation of the clinical and radiologic outcomes and adverse events of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) compared with a single cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) design, the Bryan disc has partially accomplished. Methods. This is a systematic review of RCTs with level I-II evidence. Only RCTs reporting clinical outcomes were included in this review. After a search on different databases including PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Ovid MEDLINE, a total of 10 RCTs out of total 51 studies were entered in the study. RTC's were searched from the earliest available records in 2005 to December 2014. Results. Five studies were Level I, and five were Level II. Out of a total of 1101 patients, 562 patients were randomly assigned into the Bryan arthroplasty group and the remaining 539 patients into the ACDF group. The mean follow-up was 30.9 months. Patients undergoing CDA had lower Neck Disability Index, and better SF-36 Physical component scores than ACDF patients. Patients with Bryan CDA had also less radiological degenerative changes at the upper adjacent level. Overall adverse events were twice more frequent in patients with ACDF. The rate of revision surgery including both adjacent and index level were slightly higher in patients with ACDF, showing no statistically significant difference. Conclusions. This review of evidence level I-II RCTs comparing clinical and radiological outcomes of patient undergoing Bryan arthroplasty or ACDF indicated a global superiority of the Bryan disc. The impact of both surgical techniques on the cervical spine (radiological spine deterioration and/or complications) was more severe in patients undergoing ACDF. However, the rate of revision surgeries at any cervical level was equivalent for ACDF and Bryan arthroplasty. These data suggest that even though the loss of motion has a determinant influence in the development of degenerative changes in ACDF cases, these kinematic factors do not imply a higher rate of symptomatic adjacent segment degeneration requiring surgery. Purpose. To compare the efficacy and safety of balloon kyphoplasty (BKP) to non-surgical management (NSM) over 24 months in patients with acute painful fractures by clinical outcomes and vertebral body kyphosis correction and surgical parameters. Material and Methods. Three hundred Adult patients with one to three VCF's were randomised within 3 months of the acute fracture; 149 to Balloon Kyphoplasty and 151 to Non-surgical management. Subjective QOL assessments and objective functional (Timed up and go [TUG]) and vertebral body kyphotic angulation (KA), were assessed over 24 months; we also report surgical parameters and adverse events temporally related to surgery (within 30-days). Results. Kyphoplasty was associated with greater improvements in SF-36 PCS scores when averaged across the 24-month follow-up period, compared with NSM (overall treatment effect 3.24points, 95% CI, 1.47–5.01; p=0.0004)., and TUG (overall treatment effect −3.00 seconds, 95% CI, −1.0 to −5.1; p<0.0043). At 24 months, the change from baseline in KA was statistically significantly improved in the kyphoplasty group (average 3.1°of correction for BKP versus 0.8°for NSM, p=0.003). On average IBT inflation volumes were consistent with cement volumes at 2.4 cc per side. The most common adverse events within 30-days were back pain, new vertebral fracture, nausea/vomiting and UTI. BKP is calculated to be cost-effective in the UK setting. Conclusions. Compared with NSM, BKP improves patient function and QOL when averaged over 24-months and results in better improvement of index vertebral body kyphotic angulation. Summary Statement. For RA patients undergoing TKR, the gain in function at 6 months following surgery is less than that experienced by OA patients; for THR, however, gains are similar in OA and RA patients. Introduction. Total joint replacement (TJR) is commonly used in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients and yet little information is available to quantify their functional gain following surgery and how it differs from what the osteoarthritis (OA) population experiences. Therefore, we examined 6-month functional outcomes of TJR in a population-based observational cohort of RA and OA patients who underwent total hip (THR) or knee (TKR) replacement. Methods. Patients undergoing primary TKR from 7/1/11 through 12/3/12 were identified from the FORCE-TJR national research consortium which enrolls patients from 111 surgeons across 27 states in the US. The registry gathers data from patients, surgeons and hospitals on patient demographics, underlying type of arthritis, operative joint severity based on the estimated Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC) using the Hip and Knee Disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Scores, function based on the Short Form 36 Physical Component Score (PCS), and mental health using the SF-36 Mental Component Score (MCS). Descriptive statistics were performed. Results. There were 95 RA and 991 OA patients who underwent primary TKR, and 59 RA and 740 OA patients who underwent primary THR. Among TKR patients, RA patients are more likely to be women (68% vs. 61%), nonwhite (17% vs. 9%), unmarried (59% vs. 70%) with an annual income of ≤$45,000 (57% vs. 39%) as well as lower baseline emotional health (48 vs. 52) and functioning (31 vs 33). Among THR patients, RA patients are more likely to be nonwhite (18% vs. 8%), unmarried (66% vs. 69%) with an annual income of ≤$45,000 (54% vs. 34%) as well as lower baseline emotional health (46 vs. 51) and functioning (30 vs 32). RA patients undergoing TKR have less functional gain 6 months post-surgery (6.6 vs. 9.7; p=0.002) as compared to OA patients. In contrast, RA patients who undergo THR have similar functional gain (11.6 vs. 13.8; p=0.13) as compared to OA patients. Discussion/Conclusion. RA patients have less functional improvement as compared to those with OA when undergoing TKR but similar gains when undergoing THR

Summary Statement. Preoperative bone-marrow-derived cell mobilization by G-CSF is a safe orthopaedic procedure and allows circulation in the blood of high numbers of CD34+ve cells, promoting osseointegration of a bone substitute. Introduction. Granulocyte-colony-stimulating-factor(G-CSF) has been used to improve repair processes in different clinical settings for its role in bone-marrow stem cell(CD34+ and CD34-) mobilization. Recent literature suggests that G-CSF may also play a role in skeletal-tissue repair processes. Aim of the study was to verify the feasibility and safety of preoperative bone-marrow cell (BMC) mobilization by G-CSF in orthopaedic patients and to evaluate G-CSF efficacy in accelerating bone regeneration following opening-wedge high tibial valgus osteotomy(HTVO) for genu varum. Patients/Methods. 24 patients were enrolled in a prospective phase II trial. The osteotomy gap was filled by a hydroxyapatite-tricalciumphosphate bone substitute(HATriC). Patients were randomised to receive (GROUP A) or not receive (GROUP B) preoperatively a daily dose of 10µg/kg of G-CSF for three consecutive days, with an additional dose 4 hours before surgery. BMC-mobilization was monitored by white blood cell (WBC)-count, flow-cytometry analysis of circulating CD34+cells and Colony-forming cell assays. Patients were evaluated by: Lysholm and SF-36 scores preoperatively and at 1, 2, 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery;. X-ray evaluation preoperatively and at 1, 2, 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery, in order to compare the percentage of osseointegration of the bone-graft junction using the semi-quantitative score of Dallari[1]. CT-scan of the host bone-substitute interface at 2 months, in order to estimate the quality of the newly formed bone at the bone-graft junction by a quantitative measure of bone density (by Hounsfield unit) at the proximal and distal bone-graft junctions. Results. All patients completed the treatment program without major side effects; G-CSF was well tolerated. BMC-mobilization occurred in all Group A patients, with median peak values of 110/µL (range 29–256) of circulating CD34+ve cells. Circulating clonogenic progenitors paralleled CD34+ve cell levels. A significant improvement in the SF-36-Role-Physical scale and in the Lysholm score was recorded at follow-up in Group A compared to Group B(p<0.05). At the X-ray-evaluation, there was a significant increase in osseointegration at the bone-graft junction in Group A at 1, 2, 3 and 6 months post-surgery compared to Group B(p<0.05). CT-scans of the grafted area at 2 months post-surgery showed no significant difference in the quality of the newly formed bone between the two Groups. Discussion/Conclusions. These results suggest that G-CSF can be safely administered preoperatively in subjects undergoing HTVO. In addition, the clinical, radiographic and CT monitoring indicate that preoperative G-CSF administration promotes bone graft substitute osseointegration. Enhanced osseointegration might be the result of the direct activity of G-CSF on the host bone or a cellular effect mediated by bone marrow-derived progenitors mobilised by G-CSF, or by a combination of all these factors. This study is a proof-of-principle that preoperative G-CSF might be an alternative treatment option to enhance bone regeneration in the field of bone marrow stem cell therapy and reconstructive orthopaedic surgery

Introduction. The objective of this study was to verify the long-term outcome of transtrochanteric anterior rotational osteotomy (ARO) for osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) in young patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Methods. Consecutive series of 21 symptomatic ONFH patients with SLE (33 hips), aged 20 to 40 years, underwent ARO between 1980 and 1988. We reviewed the cases of 16 patients (25 hips), which represents a 76% rate of follow-up. Patients included 4 men and 12 women who had a mean age of 29 years at the time of surgery. A Kaplan-Meier curve was used for the survivorship analysis of ARO. Patients with surviving hips were evaluated by the modified Oxford hip score and the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form 36 (SF-36). Results. Twelve hips in 8 patients survived at the final follow-up. The average length of surviving was 25 years (range, 20 to 27 years). Three patients (6 hips) had died of unrelated causes without any conversion at the mean time of 9 years after ARO. Based on Kaplan-Meier analysis with the end point defined as any conversion, the survival rate at 25 years was 73.7% (95% confidence interval, 53.9 to 93.5%). Based on the classification of the modified Oxford hip score, 5 hips were classified as excellent, 2 hips were good, and the remaining 5 hips were fair. The average SF-36 physical component summary score was 34 points and the average mental component summary score was 46 points. The physical component summary scores of 3 patients (53.0, 56.6, 57.1) exceeded the level of the Japanese population norm. Conclusion. In ONFH patients with SLE, ARO achieved a 73.7% survival rate at 25 years

Objectives

To define Patient Acceptable Symptom State (PASS) thresholds for the Oxford hip score (OHS) and Oxford knee score (OKS) at mid-term follow-up.

Methods

In a prospective multicentre cohort study, OHS and OKS were collected at a mean follow-up of three years (1.5 to 6.0), combined with a numeric rating scale (NRS) for satisfaction and an external validation question assessing the patient’s willingness to undergo surgery again. A total of 550 patients underwent total hip replacement (THR) and 367 underwent total knee replacement (TKR).
