Aims. The aims of this study were to identify means to quantify coronal plane displacement associated with distal radius fractures (DRFs), and to understand their relationship to
Displaced fractures of the distal radius in children are usually reduced under sedation or general anaesthesia to restore anatomical alignment before the limb is immobilized. However, there is growing evidence of the ability of the distal radius to remodel rapidly, raising doubts over the benefit to these children of restoring alignment. There is now clinical equipoise concerning whether or not young children with displaced distal
The aims of this study were to assess the efficacy
of a newly designed radiological technique (the
Aims. There is no level I evidence dealing with the optimal period of immobilization for patients with a displaced distal
In patients with a failed radial head arthroplasty (RHA), simple removal of the implant is an option. However, there is little information in the literature about the outcome of this procedure. The aim of this study was to review the mid-term clinical and radiological results, and the rate of complications and removal of the implant, in patients whose initial RHA was undertaken acutely for trauma involving the elbow. A total of 11 patients in whom removal of a RHA without reimplantation was undertaken as a revision procedure were reviewed at a mean follow-up of 8.4 years (6 to 11). The range of motion (ROM) and stability of the elbow were recorded. Pain was assessed using a visual analogue scale (VAS). The functional outcome was assessed using the Mayo Elbow Performance Score (MEPS), the Oxford Elbow Score (OES), and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire (DASH). Radiological examination included the assessment of heterotopic ossification (HO), implant loosening, capitellar erosion, overlengthening, and osteoarthritis. Complications and the rate of further surgery were also recorded.Aims

Aims. The management of completely displaced fractures of the distal radius in children remains controversial. This study evaluates the outcomes of surgical and non-surgical management of ‘off-ended’ fractures in children with at least two years of potential growth remaining. Methods. A total of 34 boys and 22 girls aged 0 to ten years with a closed, completely displaced metaphyseal distal
Aims. The aim of this study was to investigate the difference in functional outcome after repair and non-repair of the pronator quadratus muscle in patients undergoing surgical treatment for a distal
A fracture of the neck of the radius when the head is not ossified can be difficult to assess and treat. In a four-year-old child we suspected from the radiographs that there was an O’Brien type-III injury after trauma. Partial manual reduction of the non-ossified radial head was completed using the Métaizeau technique of intramedullary Kirschner (K-) wiring aided by intraoperative arthrography. The child had a full range of movement at the elbow and wrist when reviewed 11 weeks after the injury, three weeks after removal of the K-wire. We suggest that intraoperative arthrography is a useful complement to the Métaizeau technique for successful reduction of fractures of the
Aims. The aim of this study was to investigate whether intraoperative 3D fluoroscopic imaging outperforms dorsal tangential views in the detection of dorsal cortex screw penetration after volar plating of an intra-articular distal
Aims. Arthroscopic microfracture is a conventional form of treatment for patients with osteochondritis of the talus, involving an area of < 1.5 cm. 2. However, some patients have persistent pain and limitation of movement in the early postoperative period. No studies have investigated the combined treatment of microfracture and shortwave treatment in these patients. The aim of this prospective single-centre, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was to compare the outcome in patients treated with arthroscopic microfracture combined with

Aims. The degree of displacement of a fracture of the distal radius
is an important factor which can be assessed using simple radiographic
measurements. Our aim was to investigate the reliability and reproducibility
of these measurements and to determine if they should be used clinically. Patients and Methods. A 10% sample was randomly generated from 3670 consecutive adult
patients who had presented to University Hospitals of Leicester
NHS Trust between 2007 and 2010 with a fracture of the distal radius.
Radiographs of the 367 patients were assessed by two independent
reviewers. Four measurements of displacement of the fracture were recorded
and the inter-observer correlation assessed using the intra-class
correlation coefficient. Results. Inter-observer correlation was high (>
0.8) for three of the
four measurements. Repeat measurements of a further randomly generated
10% sample (37) were made four weeks later to assess intra-observer
agreement, which was again high (>
0.8) for the same three parameters

Repeated trauma to the radial head may be one of the causative factors in the genesis of osteochondritis dissecans of the capitellum. We measured the force, contact area and pressure across the radiocapitellar articulation of the elbow before and after

Objectives. The patient-rated wrist evaluation (PRWE) and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) questionnaire are patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) used for clinical and research purposes. Methodological high-quality clinimetric studies that determine the measurement properties of these PROMs when used in patients with a distal
