This is a retrospective case review of 237 patients with displaced fractures of the acetabulum presenting over a ten-year period, with a minimum follow-up of two years, who were studied to test the hypothesis that the time to surgery was predictive of radiological and functional outcome and varied with the pattern of fracture. Patients were divided into two groups based on the fracture pattern: elementary or associated. The time to surgery was analysed as both a continuous and a categorical variable. The primary
Total hip replacement (THR) has been shown to
be a cost-effective procedure. However, it is not risk-free. Certain conditions,
such as diabetes mellitus, are thought to increase the risk of complications.
In this study we have evaluated the prevalence of diabetes mellitus
in patients undergoing THR and the associated risk of adverse operative
outcomes. A meta-analysis and systematic review were conducted according
to the guidelines of the meta-analysis of observational studies
in epidemiology. Inclusion criteria were observational studies reporting
the prevalence of diabetes in the study population, accompanied
by reports of at least one of the following

We previously reported the long-term results of the cementless Duraloc-Profile total hip arthroplasty (THA) system in a 12- to 15-year follow-up study. In this paper, we provide an update on the clinical and radiological results of a previously reported cohort of patients at 23 to 26 years´ follow-up. Of the 99 original patients (111 hips), 73 patients (82 hips) with a mean age of 56.8 years (21 to 70) were available for clinical and radiological study at a minimum follow-up of 23 years. There were 40 female patients (44 hips) and 33 male patients (38 hips).Aims

The aim of this study was to explore the prognostic factors for postoperative neurological recovery and survival in patients with complete paralysis due to neoplastic epidural spinal cord compression. The medical records of 135 patients with complete paralysis due to neoplastic cord compression were retrospectively reviewed. Potential factors including the timing of surgery, muscular tone, and tumour characteristics were analyzed in relation to neurological recovery using logistical regression analysis. The association between neurological recovery and survival was analyzed using a Cox model. A nomogram was formulated to predict recovery.Aims

We compared 5341 patients with an initial fracture
of the hip with 633 patients who sustained a second fracture of the
contralateral hip. Patients presenting with a second fracture were
more likely to be institutionalised, female, older, and have lower
mobility and mental test scores. There was no significant difference
between the two groups with regards to the change in the level of
mobility or return to their original residence at one year follow-up. However,
the mortality rate in the second fracture group was significantly
higher at one year (31.6% vs 27.3%, p = 0.024).
In two thirds of patients, the second fracture was in the same anatomical
location as the first. In an analysis of 293 patients, approximately
70% of second fractures occurred within three years of the first. This is the largest study to investigate the

The aim of this study was to investigate the local recurrence rate at an extended follow-up in patients following navigated resection of primary pelvic and sacral tumours. This prospective cohort study comprised 23 consecutive patients (nine female, 14 male) who underwent resection of a primary pelvic or sacral tumour, using computer navigation, between 2010 and 2012. The mean age of the patients at the time of presentation was 51 years (10 to 77). The rates of local recurrence and mortality were calculated using the Kaplan–Meier method.Aims
