The aim of this study was to identify risk factors for failure of exchange nailing in tibial diaphyseal fracture non-unions. The cohort comprised 99 tibial diaphyseal fracture non-unions treated by exchange nailing. The mean age of the patients at exchange nail surgery was 36 years. The median time from primary fixation to exchange nailing was 6.4 months. The main outcome measures were union, number of secondary fixation procedures required to achieve union and time to union. Univariate analysis and multiple regression were used to identify risk factors for failure to achieve union.

Multiple causes for non-union were found in 31.3% cases, with infection present in 32.3%. Further exchange procedures were required in 35.4%, 7.1% required the use of other fixation modalities. Union was ultimately achieved in 97.8%. The median time to union was 8.7 months. Univariate analysis revealed that cigarette smoking, an atrophic pattern of non-union and infection were predictive for failure of exchange nailing (p<0.05). Multi-regression analysis found that only infection was statistically significantly predictive (p<0.05) of exchange nail failure.

Exchange nailing is an effective treatment for tibial diaphyseal non-unions even in the presence of infection. Smoking, atrophic pattern of non-union and infection are associated with an increased risk of further fixation surgery.

Aims. Tobacco, in addition to being one of the greatest public health threats facing our world, is believed to have deleterious effects on bone metabolism and especially on bone healing. It has been described in the literature that patients who smoke are approximately twice as likely to develop a nonunion following a non-specific bone fracture. For clavicle fractures, this risk is unclear, as is the impact that such a complication might have on the initial management of these fractures. Methods. A systematic review and meta-analysis were performed for conservatively treated displaced midshaft clavicle fractures. Embase, PubMed, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (via Cochrane Library) were searched from inception to 12 May 2022, with supplementary searches in Open Grey, ClinicalTrials.gov, ProQuest Dissertations & Theses, and Google Scholar. The searches were performed without limits for publication date or languages. Results. The meta-analysis included eight studies, 2,285 observations, and 304 events (nonunion). The random effects model predicted a pooled risk ratio (RR) of 3.68 (95% confidence interval 1.87 to 7.23), which can be considered significant (p = 0.003). It indicates that smoking more than triples the risk of nonunion when a fracture is treated conservatively. Conclusion. Smoking confers a RR of 3.68 for developing a nonunion in patients with a displaced middle third clavicle fracture treated conservatively. We know that most patients with pseudarthrosis will have pain and a poor functional outcome. Therefore, patients should be informed of the significantly higher risks of nonunion and offered smoking cessation efforts and counselling. NICE Guidelines suggest patients should be offered a Total Hip Replacement (THR) rather than Hemiarthroplasty for a displaced intracapsular hip fracture. We investigated outcomes of patients aged 40–65 who received a THR or Hemiarthroplasty following a traumatic intracapsular hip fracture and had either high-risk (Group 1) or low-risk (Group 2) alcohol consumption (>14 or <14 units/week respectively). This was a retrospective study (April 2008 – December 2018) evaluating patients who underwent THR or Hemiarthroplasty in Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Atraumatic injuries, acetabular fractures, patients with previous procedures on the affected side and those lost to follow up were excluded. Analysis of length of admission, dislocation risk, periprosthetic fractures, infection risk, and mortality was conducted between both cohorts. Survival time post-operatively of Group 1 patients with a THR (61.9 months) and Hemiarthroplasty (42.3 months) were comparable to Group 2 patients with a THR (59 months) and Hemiarthroplasty(42.4 months). Group 1 patients with THR had increased risk of dislocation (12.9%; p=0.04) compared to those that received Hemiarthroplasty (2.5%). Group 1 Hemiarthroplasty patients had increased wound infection risk (11.6%) compared to Group 2 (3.7%). In conclusion, we found that amongst our population the life expectancy of a post-operative patient was short irrespective of whether they had high or low-risk alcohol consumption. A hip fracture may represent increased frailty in our study population. The Group 1 THR cohort presented a higher risk of hip dislocation and periprosthetic fracture. With this in mind, Hemiarthroplasty is a more cost-effective and shorter operation which produces similar results

Aims. The aim of this study was to compare the early postoperative mortality and morbidity in older patients with a fracture of the femoral neck, between those who underwent total hip arthroplasty (THA) and those who underwent hemiarthroplasty. Methods. This nationwide, retrospective cohort study used data from the Japanese Diagnosis Procedure Combination database. We included older patients (aged ≥ 60 years) who underwent THA or hemiarthroplasty after a femoral neck fracture, between July 2010 and March 2022. A total of 165,123 patients were included. The THA group was younger (mean age 72.6 (SD 8.0) vs 80.7 years (SD 8.1)) and had fewer comorbidities than the hemiarthroplasty group. Patients with dementia or malignancy were excluded because they seldom undergo THA. The primary outcome measures were mortality and complications while in hospital, and secondary outcomes were readmission and reoperation within one and two years after discharge, and the costs of hospitalization. We conducted an instrumental variable analysis (IVA) using differential distance as a variable. Results. The IVA analysis showed that the THA group had a significantly higher rate of complications while in hospital (risk difference 6.3% (95% CI 2.0 to 10.6); p = 0.004) than the hemiarthroplasty group, but there was no significant difference in the rate of mortality while in hospital (risk difference 0.3% (95% CI -1.7 to 2.2); p = 0.774). There was no significant difference in the rate of readmission (within one year: risk difference 1.3% (95% CI -1.9 to 4.5); p = 0.443; within two years: risk difference 0.1% (95% CI -3.2 to 3.4); p = 0.950) and reoperation (within one year: risk difference 0.3% (95% CI -0.6 to 1.1); p = 0.557; within two years: risk difference 0.1% (95% CI -0.4 to 0.7); p = 0.632) after discharge. The costs of hospitalization were significantly higher in the THA group than in the hemiarthroplasty group (difference $2,634 (95% CI $2,496 to $2,772); p < 0.001). Conclusion. Among older patients undergoing surgery for a femoral neck fracture, the risk of early complications was higher after THA than after hemiarthroplasty. Aims

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between fracture displacement and survivorship of the native hip joint without conversion to a total hip arthroplasty (THA), and to determine predictors for conversion to THA in patients treated nonoperatively for acetabular fractures.

Methods

A multicentre cross-sectional study was performed in 170 patients who were treated nonoperatively for an acetabular fracture in three level 1 trauma centres. Using the post-injury diagnostic CT scan, the maximum gap and step-off values in the weightbearing dome were digitally measured by two trauma surgeons. Native hip survival was reported using Kaplan-Meier curves. Predictors for conversion to THA were determined using Cox regression analysis.

Aims

Periprosthetic fractures (PPFs) following hip arthroplasty are complex injuries. This study evaluates patient demographic characteristics, management, outcomes, and risk factors associated with PPF subtypes over a decade.

Methods

Using a multicentre collaborative study design, independent of registry data, we identified adults from 29 centres with PPFs around the hip between January 2010 and December 2019. Radiographs were assessed for the Unified Classification System (UCS) grade. Patient and injury characteristics, management, and outcomes were compared between UCS grades. A multinomial logistic regression was performed to estimate relative risk ratios (RRR) of variables on UCS grade.

Aims

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a common complication after elbow trauma and can cause severe upper limb disability. Although multiple prognostic factors have been reported to be associated with the development of post-traumatic HO, no model has yet been able to combine these predictors more succinctly to convey prognostic information and medical measures to patients. Therefore, this study aimed to identify prognostic factors leading to the formation of HO after surgery for elbow trauma, and to establish and validate a nomogram to predict the probability of HO formation in such particular injuries.

Methods

This multicentre case-control study comprised 200 patients with post-traumatic elbow HO and 229 patients who had elbow trauma but without HO formation between July 2019 and December 2020. Features possibly associated with HO formation were obtained. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression model was used to optimize feature selection. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was applied to build the new nomogram: the Shanghai post-Traumatic Elbow Heterotopic Ossification Prediction model (STEHOP). STEHOP was validated by concordance index (C-index) and calibration plot. Internal validation was conducted using bootstrapping validation.

Aims

The incidence of atypical femoral fractures (AFFs) continues to increase. However, there are currently few long-term studies on the complications of AFFs and factors affecting them. Therefore, we attempted to investigate the outcomes, complications, and risk factors for complication through mid-term follow-up of more than three years.

Methods

From January 2003 to January 2016, 305 patients who underwent surgery for AFFs at six hospitals were enrolled. After exclusion, a total of 147 patients were included with a mean age of 71.6 years (48 to 89) and 146 of whom were female. We retrospectively evaluated medical records, and reviewed radiographs to investigate the fracture site, femur bowing angle, presence of delayed union or nonunion, contralateral AFFs, and peri-implant fracture. A statistical analysis was performed to identify the significance of associated factors.

Aims. The use of local antibiotic carriers in the treatment of chronic osteomyelitis is an important adjunct in dead space management. We present the outcomes of two different biodegradable antibiotic carriers used in the management of chronic osteomyelitis. Method. A single centre series between 2006–2017. The initial cohort (2006–2010) of 137 cases, Group A, had Osteoset® T (calcium sulphate carrier containing tobramycin). The second cohort (2013–1017) of 160 cases, group B, had CeramentTM G (biphasic calcium sulphate, nano-crystalline hydroxyapatite carrier containing gentamicin). Only Cierny-Mader Grade III and IV cases were included with a minimum six-month radiographic follow-up. Infection recurrence rate, wound leakage, subsequent fracture involving the treated segment, and radiographic void filling were assessed at a minimum of 6 months following surgery. Results. Mean follow-up in Group A was 2.5 yrs (0.5–10.5) and in Group B it was 1.4 yrs (0.6–4.7). Group A had a significantly higher rate of infection recurrence (16/137 (11.7%) Vs. 7/160 (4.4%) p=0.0278), wound leakage (26/137 (19.0%) Vs. 16/160 (10.0%) p=0.0304) and subsequent fracture rate (11/137 (8.0%) Vs. 3/160 (1.9%) p=0.0143) compared to Group B. Average time to recurrence was 1.07 years (0.1–2.6) in Group A and 1.02 (0.2–2.1) in Group B. The mean bone void healing in Group B was significantly better than Group A (73.2% Vs. 40.0%, p <0.00001). Conclusions. Cerament™ G has significantly better bone healing compared to a calcium sulphate carrier and was associated with a lower rate of recurrent infection, wound leakage and subsequent fracture risk

Background. Though less common than in females, osteoporosis and osteoporosis-related fractures are not uncommon in males. Our primary objectives were (1) to compare the rates of osteoporosis and osteopenia in adult Brazilian males versus females, 55 years old and over and presenting for bone mineral densitometry (BMD); and (2) to compare males and females as to past osteoporosis screening and management. Methods. From our clinic population, we prospectively surveyed 343 males and 493 females, all at least 55 years of age, who had presented for BMD testing, to identify baseline demographic and clinical characteristics; risk factors for osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures; overall osteoporosis and 10-year fracture risk; and evidence of prior assessment for and/or management/prevention of osteoporosis. Final osteoporosis risk was determined using the results of BMD testing and the FRAX® tool. Gender comparisons were performed using Pearson 2 analysis for nominal and ordinal variables, Student's t-tests for normally-distributed continuous variables, and Mann-Whitney U tests for non-normally-distributed continuous variables, with all tests 2-tailed and p=0.05 set as the threshold for statistical significance. Binary logistic regression was performed to identify predictors of prior hormonal treatment and BMD. Results. There were no differences in the rates of prior fracture, spinal fracture or long-bone fracture between the sexes, though women were more likely to have osteoporosis of the spine and femur, and had higher estimated risks of future osteoporotic fracture (all p < 0.001). Women also were significantly more likely to have received treatment for their osteoporosis (7.9 vs. 3.1%, p=0.004) and to have had prior BMD testing (80.7 vs. 16.2%, p < 0.001). Ten-year probabilities of hip fracture were 4.8% in males and 5.2% in females; and for a major osteoporotic fracture 5.6% and 24.3%., respectively (both p < 0.001). Age, gender and spinal osteoporosis predicted prior hormonal treatment; but gender was the only predictor of prior BMD, with males 95% less likely to have undergone prior testing than females. Conclusions. Despite similar past fracture rates, and lower but still appreciable future fracture risk, far fewer males than females had received prior screening or management of their osteoporosis

Aims

The primary aim of this study was to identify independent predictors associated with nonunion and delayed union of tibial diaphyseal fractures treated with intramedullary nailing. The secondary aim was to assess the Radiological Union Scale for Tibial fractures (RUST) score as an early predictor of tibial fracture nonunion.

Methods

A consecutive series of 647 patients who underwent intramedullary nailing for tibial diaphyseal fractures were identified from a trauma database. Demographic data, comorbidities, smoking status, alcohol consumption, use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and steroid use were documented. Details regarding mechanism of injury, fracture classification, complications, and further surgery were recorded. Nonunion was defined as the requirement for revision surgery to achieve union. Delayed union was defined as a RUST score < 10 at six months postoperatively.

Aims

The aim of this study was to describe variation in hip fracture treatment in Norway expressed as adherence to international and national evidence-based treatment guidelines, to study factors influencing deviation from guidelines, and to analyze consequences of non-adherence.

Methods

International and national guidelines were identified and treatment recommendations extracted. All 43 hospitals routinely treating hip fractures in Norway were characterized. From the Norwegian Hip Fracture Register (NHFR), hip fracture patients aged > 65 years and operated in the period January 2014 to December 2018 for fractures with conclusive treatment guidelines were included (n = 29,613: femoral neck fractures (n = 21,325), stable trochanteric fractures (n = 5,546), inter- and subtrochanteric fractures (n = 2,742)). Adherence to treatment recommendations and a composite indicator of best practice were analyzed. Patient survival and reoperations were evaluated for each recommendation.

Introduction. Low total Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score might significantly increase risk of hip fractures. This study was to investigate the effects of MMSE subdomains on the risk of hip fractures with a sex and age matched case control study. Materials & Methods. A total of 217 patients with first low-trauma hip fractures were matched with 215 hospitalised controls. Seven MMSE subdomains were analysed using conditional logistic regression with adjustment of five important clinical confounders: education level, ADL, physical activities, body mass index and bone mineral density. ROC curve analyses were further used to investigate the predictability of the independent subdomains. Results. In univariate analyses, low score of all MMSE subdomains significantly increased the risk of hip fracture. However, only time orientation and visual construction domain remained significant in multivariate analyses. In the ROC curve analyses, the AUC of these two independent subdomains along with five clinical confounders was significantly larger (p=0.008) than that of clinical confounders alone. The AUC of summed scores of these two subdomains were significantly higher than that of total MMSE score (p=0.009). Conclusions. Time orientation and visual construction subdomains were significant independent risk factors for hip fractures and could be effectively used to screen the patients with high fracture risk in the hospital. Preventive intervention can be given to these patients

Clinical evidence that patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have increased risk of fractures is reported. Furthermore, thiazolidinediones, used to treat T2DM increases the risk of secondary osteoporosis & subsequent fractures. The osteogenic potency of metformin is reported in vitro, few studies have investigated the effects of metformin on bone mass and fracture healing in vivo. We aimed to investigate the effects of metformin on fracture healing in vivo. Method. 20 female Wistar rats aged 3 months were randomly divided in two groups, one group receiving saline, the other group receiving metformin administered orally via the drinking water at a concentration of 2mg/ml. After 4 weeks of metformin treatment, a mid-diaphyseal, open External fixation fracture was performed. Rats were sacrified 4 weeks later. Right contralateral tibia and left osteotomised femora were excised, bone architecture analysed by micro-CT in the right tibia. Results. No significant differences were noted between the two groups. Fracture callus volume and mineral content after 4 weeks were similar in metformin and saline groups. Discussion Our results indicate that while metformin has no adverse effects on bone, it does not promote bone mass, as suggested by in vitro studies. This confirms clinical data which have not shown direct links between metformin and decreased fracture risk

Improving periprosthetic bone is essential for implant fixation and reducing peri-implant fracture risk. This studied examined the individual and combined effects of iPTH and mechanical loading at the cellular, molecular, and tissue level for periprosthetic cancellous bone. Adult rabbits had a porous titanium implant inserted bilaterally on the cancellous bone beneath a mechanical loading device on the distal lateral femur. The right femur was loaded daily, the left femur received a sham loading device, and half of the rabbits received daily PTH. Periprosthetic bone was processed up to 28 days for qPCR, histology, and uCT analysis. We observed an increase in cellular and molecular markers of osteoblast activity and decrease in adipocytic markers for both treatments, with small additional effects in the combined group. Loading and iPTH led to a decrease and increase, respectively, in osteoclast number, acting through changes in RANKL/OPG expression. Changes in SOST and beta-catenin mRNA levels suggested an integral role for the Wnt pathway. We observed strong singular effects on BV/TV of both loading (1.53 fold) and iPTH (1.54 fold). Combined treatment showed a small additive effect on bone volume. In conclusion, loading and iPTH act through a pro-osteoblastic/anti-adipocytic response and through control of bone turnover via changes in the RANKL/OPG pathway. These changes led to a small additional, but not synergistic, increase in bone volume with the combined therapy

Introduction. Osteoporosis is a metabolic disease of the bone responsible for a loss of bone resistance and an increase in fracture risk. World Health Organization (WHO) estimations are about 6.3 millions of femoral neck fractures in the world by 2050. These estimations make osteoporosis a real problem in term of public health. Knowledge in biological tissues mechanical behaviour and its evolution with age are important for the design of diagnosis and therapeutic tools. From the mechanical aspect, bone resistance is dependent on bone density, bone architecture and bone tissue quality. If the importance of bone density and bone architecture has been well explored, the bone tissue quality still remains unstudied because of the lack of biomechanical tools suitable for testing bone at this microscopic dimension. Therefore the goal of this study is to estimate the osteoporotic cancellous bone tissue mechanical behaviour at its microscopic scale, using an approach coupling mechanical assays and digital reconstruction. Materials and methods. The experimental study is based on cancellous bone tissue extracted from human femoral head. Forty 8mm diameters bone cylinders have been removed from femoral head explanted after a femoral neck fracture treated by arthroplasty. These cylinders have been submitted to a digitally controlled compressive trial. Before and after the trials, microscanner analyses with an 8 μm spatial resolution have been realized in order to determine the micro structural parameters. The cylinders have been rebuilt with the digital model-building in order to estimate the mechanical behaviour and the bone quality. Results. The results will be presented from a macroscopic and microscopic point of view and will show the relationship between gender and age of the patients. At the macroscopic scale, we will look at that apparent young modulus heterogeneity and the cracking strength. At the microscopic scale, we will confirm that the cancellous bone tissue mechanical behaviour is close to the Haversian bone tissue mechanical behaviour. Finally, the parametric study will permit us to point out the main microstructural components influencing cancellous bone tissue quality. Conclusion. This study allows a precise estimation of the osteoporotic cancellous bone tissue mechanical behaviour. It seems to be a great step in the understanding of this disease and it could probably lead to great improvements in the diagnosis, prognostic, medical and surgical approaches of osteoporosis

INTRODUCTION. One of the recent advances in the hard-on-hard hip arthroplasty is the development of a new material of diffusion hardened oxidised zirconium (DHOxZr). The DHOxZr material consists of a ceramic layer on the top surface which is supported by a thick oxygen diffusion hardened (DH) zone underneath. With the desired properties of metal substrate, ceramic surface and a gradient structure of the oxygen diffusion zone, the DHOxZr-on-DHOxZr bearing combination is expected to produce low wear and minimal metal ions. This can possibly address the concerns associated with metal hypersensitivity associated with metal on metal bearings and fracture risk associated with ceramics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the wear of DHOxZr-on-DHOxZr as a possible hard on hard bearing combination in hips. METHODS. Three pairs of 50 mm DHOxZr prototype hip joint devices, each consisting of a DHOxZr modular head and a DHOxZr liner were wear tested in a ProSim hip joint simulator under standard testing conditions used by the Implant Development Centre (IDC), Smith & Nephew, Leamington Spa for 5 million cycles (Mc). The flexion/extension was 30° and 15°. The internal/external rotation was ± 10°. The force was Paul-type stance phase loading, with a maximum load of 3 kN and a standard ISO swing phase load of 0.3 kN. The test frequency was 1 Hz. Gravimetric analysis was carried out at 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 million cycles. The lubricant was new born calf serum with 2 g/l sodium azide concentration diluted with de-ionised water to achieve average protein concentration of 20 g/l. Lubricant was changed every 0.25Mc during the first million cycles of the test and at every 0.33 Mc from 1 to 5Mc. RESULTS. A biphasic wear pattern was observed for the DHOxZr on DHOxZr devices during the test, with a running in phase from 0–1 Mc and a steady state phase from 1–5 Mc. At a confidence level of 95%, the mean wear rate was 0.21 ±0.06 mm3/Mc during the running-in stage, and the wear rate was reduced to 0.01 ±0.03 mm3/Mc during the steady state for the device tested. The wear volume loss of the DHOxZr on DHOxZr devices was significantly lower than that generated by CoCrMo metal on metal (MoM) devices (p < 0.05) under identical simulator test conditions

Aims

Bone health assessment and the prescription of medication for secondary fracture prevention have become an integral part of the acute management of patients with hip fracture. However, there is little evidence regarding compliance with prescription guidelines and subsequent adherence to medication in this patient group.

Patients and Methods

The World Hip Trauma Evaluation (WHiTE) is a multicentre, prospective cohort of hip fracture patients in NHS hospitals in England and Wales. Patients aged 60 years and older who received operative treatment for a hip fracture were eligible for inclusion in WHiTE. The prescription of bone protection medications was recorded from participants’ discharge summaries, and participant-reported use of bone protection medications was recorded at 120 days following surgery.

Introduction. In knee arthroplasty a ceramic component has several advantages: first, there is no ion release implying a risk for potential allergies. Second, the hardness of the material leads to a scratch resistance which ultimately reduces PE wear over time. In the past, ceramic components in knee applications were limited in the variety of design possibilities due to necessary thickness of the component resulting from the associated fracture risk of ceramics. By the development of an alumina matrix composite material with increased mechanical properties it is possible to develop ceramic knee components which have nearly the same design as a metal component and use the same implantation technique as well as the same instruments. This offers the surgeon the opportunity to choose intraoperatively between metal or ceramic knee components. Extensive in-vitro testing shows that ceramic knee components achieve superior mechanical test results. The reliability of the components is proven by two different burst tests and a fatigue test for both a femoral and a tibial ceramic knee component. Material and method. The mechanical proof-test was developed by subsequent steps of numerical load/stress analysis and design of an adequate mechanical test equipment. The procedure was organized as follows:. Oncologic: Analysis of relevant maximum in-vivo loading conditions. Analysis of the “boundary conditions”. Finite Element analysis: Identifying regions of highest stress concentration. Design analysis and accommodation if necessary. Development of an adequate mechanical test equipment which produces stresses comparable to the in-vivo conditions. Performing mechanical tests with ceramic femoral components. Validation of the test concept: comparison of test results and stress analysis. Assign “safety margin”,. Establish “proof test”. Results. Two independent load scenarios have been determined for each type of components as being in-vivo relevant. Hence, the developed proof-test consists of two subsequent load tests, the so-called regular test and the tension test for the femoral components, and the upper side test and the lower side test for the tibial components. In the regular test, the mechanical strength of the polished outer condyles is tested using a force which is equivalent to an in-vivo loading of 16 times bodyweight. In the tension test, the interior sides of the condyles are stressed in the sagittal plane ensuring a mechanically reliable implantation. This test is performed with a force equivalent to 10 times bodyweight. Discussion. The procedure to determine the proof loads using the maximum in-vivo loads together with a safety factor ensures the mechanical safety of the ceramic knee component. Together with the well-known excellent wear and biological behaviour of ceramics, this application provides an alternative to common metallic knee components. Clinical observations in the framework of a multi-centre study in different European countries have been started and show very promising results

Aims

Currently, periprosthetic fractures are excluded from the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) definition of atypical femoral fracture (AFFs). This study aims to report on a series of periprosthetic femoral fractures (PFFs) that otherwise meet the criteria for AFFs. Secondary aims were to identify predictors of periprosthetic atypical femoral fractures (PAFFs) and quantify the complications of treatment.

Patients and Methods

This was a retrospective case control study of consecutive patients with periprosthetic femoral fractures between 2007 and 2017. Two observers identified 16 PAFF cases (mean age 73.9 years (44 to 88), 14 female patients) and 17 typical periprosthetic fractures in patients on bisphosphonate therapy as controls (mean age 80.7 years (60 to 86, 13 female patients). Univariate and multivariate analysis was performed to identify predictors of PAFF. Management and complications were recorded.
