Machine-learning (ML) prediction models in orthopaedic trauma hold great promise in assisting clinicians in various tasks, such as personalized risk stratification. However, an overview of current applications and critical appraisal to peer-reviewed guidelines is lacking. The objectives of this study are to 1) provide an overview of current ML prediction models in orthopaedic trauma; 2) evaluate the completeness of reporting following the Transparent Reporting of a multivariable prediction model for Individual Prognosis Or Diagnosis (TRIPOD) statement; and 3) assess the risk of bias following the Prediction model Risk Of Bias Assessment Tool (PROBAST) tool. A systematic search screening 3,252 studies identified 45 ML-based prediction models in orthopaedic trauma up to January 2023. The TRIPOD statement assessed transparent reporting and the PROBAST tool the risk of bias.Aims

Introduction. Reported data on impact of obesity on outcome of total joint arthroplasty (TJA) is mixed. The purpose of this
To describe outcome reporting variation and trends in non-pharmacological randomized clinical trials (RCTs) of distal tibia and/or ankle fractures. Five electronic databases and three clinical trial registries were searched (January 2000 to February 2022). Trials including patients with distal tibia and/or ankle fractures without concomitant injuries were included. One reviewer conducted all searches, screened titles and abstracts, assessed eligibility, and completed data extraction; a random 10% subset were independently assessed and extracted by a second reviewer at each stage. All extracted outcomes were mapped to a modified version of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health framework. The quality of outcome reporting (reproducibility) was assessed.Aims

Aims. Spinopelvic characteristics influence the hip’s biomechanical behaviour. However, to date there is little knowledge defining what ‘normal’ spinopelvic characteristics are. This study aims to determine how static spinopelvic characteristics change with age and ethnicity among asymptomatic, healthy individuals. Methods. This
Abstract. Objectives. The outcomes from patella fracture have remained dissatisfactory despite advances in treatment, especially from operative fixation1. Frequently, reoperation is required following open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of the patella due to prominent hardware since the standard technique for patella ORIF is tension band wiring (TBW) which inevitably leaves a bulky knot and irritates soft tissue given the patella's superficial position2. We performed a
Abstract. Introduction. Displaced olecranon fractures in the elderly are challenging due to associated comorbidities, poor tissue quality, high risk of complications, and the possible need for implant removal. Treatment options with such fractures range from non-operative management to internal fixation with various types of implants. Currently, there is no consensus on the treatment of olecranon fractures in the elderly with relatively low functional demand. Aim. The aim of this
Aims. The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered transformative change in how clinicians interact with their patients. There has been a shift away from face-to-face toward virtual consultations. However, the evidence to support this change in practice is unclear. The aim of this study was to
Prosthetic Joint Infection (PJI) is a devastating complication that can occur after total joint replacement surgery. With increasing antimicrobial resistance, there is a need for non-antibiotic approaches to treat and prevent PJI. Doping calcium phosphates with antimicrobial ions shows promise for these purposes. Abstract. Introduction. Secondary osteonecrosis of the knee affects young population and causes bilateral extensive lesions. Arthroplasty is the last resort in younger population and joint preserving options questionable in pathological bone. Conservative measures have shown failure in multiple studies and hence no gold standard treatment advocated. We aimed at identifying and analysing various treatment options for secondary osteonecrosis with respect to the outcomes and studying features of symptomatic secondary osteonecrosis with regards to demographic pattern, radiological features and causative factors. Methods. A
There is no consensus for the appropriate surgical management of chronic ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries of the thumb. A
Total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) and Reverse Total shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) are two of the most performed shoulder operations today. Traditionally postoperative rehabilitation included a period of immobilisation, protecting the joint and allowing time for soft tissue healing. This immobilisation period may significantly impact a patient's quality of life (Qol)and ability to perform activities of daily living (ADL's). This period of immobilisation could be safely avoided, accelerating return to function and improving postoperative QoL. This
Abstract. Introduction. Active, middle-aged patients with symptomatic cartilage or osteochondral defects can find themselves in a treatment gap when they have failed conservative measures but are not yet eligible for conventional arthroplasty. Data from various cohort studies suggests that focal knee resurfacing implants such as HemiCAP, UniCAP, Episealer or BioBoly are cost-effective solutions to alleviate pain, improve function and delay or eliminate the need for conventional replacement. Abstract. Introduction. The NHS generates 4–5% of the nation's total carbon emissions and over 500,000 tonnes of waste annually. Up to one-third of waste from orthopaedic procedures are recyclable, with large joint arthroplasties producing more than other subspecialties. However, there is limited evidence demonstrating the principles of sustainability and its benefits within orthopaedic surgery. This study aimed to analyse the environmental impact and sustainable initiatives undertaken within orthopaedic surgery. Methodology. A
Introduction. With an aging population, the prevalence of fragility ankle fractures is rising. The surgical management of these injuries is challenging and associated with high rates of complications. The incidence of fragility ankle fractures is currently estimated to be around 150 per 100,000 people annually and is anticipated to rise to around 269 per 100,000 by 2030. The aim of surgery is to restore mobility, preserve function and to prevent complications related to non-weight-bearing and the application of hind foot nail (HFN) seems to provide these advantages. This
Emerging evidence suggests preoperative opioid use may increase the risk of negative outcomes following orthopedic procedures. This
Although total hip arthroplasty (THA) is beneficial for many patients with hip osteoarthritis (OA), a subset of patients experience minimal benefit. It is therefore pertinent to understand the predictors of poor functional outcome to facilitate shared decision making. One such predictor is preoperative radiographic OA severity. The aim of this
In this study, we examined the impact of dual-mobility (DM) versus fixed-bearing (FB) implants on outcomes following total hip arthroplasty (THA), a common and successful operation. We examined all-cause revision, revision due to dislocation, postoperative complications and functional scores in patients undergoing primary and revision THA. A
Flat-top talus (FTT) is a complication well-known to those treating clubfoot. Despite varying anecdotal opinions, its association with different treatments, especially the Ponseti method, remains uncertain. This
The demand for revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has grown significantly in recent years. The two major fixation methods for stems in revision TKA include cemented and ‘hybrid’ fixation. We explore the optimal fixation method using data from recent, well-designed comparative studies. We performed a
Abstract. Purpose. Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) is an effective treatment for late knee osteoarthritis (OA). However, its indications remain controversial. Young age (< 60 years) has been associated with worse outcomes. The goal of this
Abstract. Introduction. Autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) is a common procedure, primarily performed in active, young patients to treat knee pain and functional limitations resulting from cartilage injury. Nevertheless, the functional outcomes of ACI remain poorly understood. Thus, the aim of this
Over half of postpartum women experience pelvic ring or hip pain, with multiple anatomic locations involved. The sacroiliac joints, pubic symphysis, lumbar spine and pelvic girdle are all well documented pain generators. However, despite the prevalence of postpartum hip pain, there is a paucity of literature regarding underlying soft tissue intra-articular etiologies. The purpose of this
The use of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering is well established, given their properties of self-renewal and differentiation. However, several studies have shown that these properties diminish with age, and understanding the pathways involved are important to provide regenerative therapies in an ageing population. In this PRISMA
Abstract. Purpose. The aim of this study was to assess how biomechanical gait parameters (kinematics, kinetics, and muscle force estimations) differ between patients with camtype FAI and healthy controls, through a systematic search. Methods. A
Aims. Robotic-assisted unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) promises accurate implant placement with the potential of improved survival and functional outcomes. The aim of this study was to present the current evidence for robotic-assisted UKA and describe the outcome in terms of implant positioning, range of movement (ROM), function and survival, and the types of robot and implants that are currently used. Materials and Methods. A search of PubMed and Medline was performed in October 2018 in line with the Preferred Reporting Items for
Introduction. Snapping hip syndrome is a common condition affecting 10% of the population. It is due to the advance of the iliotibial band (ITB) over the greater trochanter during lower limb movements and often associated with hip overuse, such as in athletic activities. Management is commonly conservative with physiotherapy or can be surgical to release the ITB. Here we carry out a
Introduction. Knee arthrodesis is a useful limb salvage technique to maintain function in patients with complex and infected total knee arthroplasties (TKA). There are a number of commonly used external fixators, but no consensus on which of these are optimal. The aim of this study was to synthesise the current literature to guide clinical decision making and improve patient outcomes. We

Abstract. Aim. End-stage arthropathy is a well-known complication of haemophilia, with recurrent haemarthroses leading to joint destruction, deformity, pain, and stiffness. In the knee, this is often treated with total knee arthroplasty (TKA), which can be more challenging in patients with haemophilia (PwH) and associated with poorer outcomes. We conducted a
Aims. Perthes’ disease is a condition leading to necrosis of the femoral head. It is most common in children aged four to nine years, affecting around one per 1,200 children in the UK. Management typically includes non-surgical treatment options, such as physiotherapy with/without surgical intervention. However, there is significant variation in care with no consensus on the most effective treatment option. Methods. This
Background. Distal radius fractures are common injuries but no clear consensus regarding optimal management of unstable fractures exists. Open reduction and internal fixation with volar plates is an increasingly popular but the associated complication rate can be 10%. Intramedullary nails are an alternative offering the potential advantages of reduced risk of tendon injury and intra-articular screw penetration. This article
Minimally displaced paediatric proximal humerus fractures (PHFs) can be reliably managed non-operatively, however there is considerable debate regarding the appropriate management of severely displaced PHFs, particularly in older children and adolescents with limited remodelling potential. The purpose of this study was to perform a
Adipose tissue releases several bioactive peptides and hormones, like adipokines that promote a low inflammatory systemic state. Inflammation, affecting the tendon homeostasis, could play a role in tendon disease development as well as in the healing process. Obese patients show a dysregulated level of adipokines and considering the higher mechanical demand, this relates to higher incidence of tendinopathies among these subjects. A
