The aim of this study was to report a retrospective, consecutive
series of patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) who
were treated with posterior minimally invasive surgery (MIS) with
a mean follow-up of two years ( We prospectively collected the data of 70 consecutive patients
with AIS treated with MIS using three incisions and a muscle-splitting
approach by a single surgeon between June 2013 and February 2016
and these were retrospectively reviewed. There were eight male and
62 female patients with a mean age of 15 years (Aims

We conducted a study to identify factors that are prognostic
of the outcome of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) for calcific
tendinitis of the shoulder. Since 1998, patients with symptomatic calcific tendinitis of
the rotator cuff have been treated with ESWT using an electrohydraulic
mode shockwave device. One year after ESWT, patients were grouped
according to the level of resorption of calcification.Aims

The Bereiter trochleoplasty has been used in our unit for 12
years to manage recurrent patellar instability in patients with
severe trochlea dysplasia. The aim of this study was to document
the outcome of a large consecutive cohort of patients who have undergone
this operation. Between June 2002 and August 2013, 214 consecutive trochleoplasties
were carried out in 185 patients. There were 133 women and 52 men
with a mean age of 21.3 years (14 to 38). All patients were offered
yearly clinical and radiological follow-up. They completed the following
patient reported outcome scores (PROMs): International Knee Documentation
Committee subjective scale, the Kujala score, the Western Ontario
and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index score and the short-form
(SF)-12. Aims
Patients and Methods
The primary aim of this study was to define the standard minimum
follow-up required to produce a reliable estimate of the rate of
re-operation after radial head arthroplasty (RHA). The secondary
objective was to define the leading reasons for re-operation. Four electronic databases, between January 2000 and March 2017
were searched. Articles reporting reasons for re-operation (Group
I) and results (Group II) after RHA were included. In Group I, a
meta-analysis was performed to obtain the standard minimum follow-up,
the mean time to re-operation and the reason for failure. In Group
II, the minimum follow-up for each study was compared with the standard
minimum follow-up.Aims

In the present study, we aimed to assess whether gelatin/β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) composite porous scaffolds could be used as a local controlled release system for vancomycin. We also investigated the efficiency of the scaffolds in eliminating infections and repairing osteomyelitis defects in rabbits. The gelatin scaffolds containing differing amounts of of β-TCP (0%, 10%, 30% and 50%) were prepared for controlled release of vancomycin and were labelled G-TCP0, G-TCP1, G-TCP3 and G-TCP5, respectively. The Kirby-Bauer method was used to examine the release profile. Chronic osteomyelitis models of rabbits were established. After thorough debridement, the osteomyelitis defects were implanted with the scaffolds. Radiographs and histological examinations were carried out to investigate the efficiency of eliminating infections and repairing bone defects. Objective
Methods
We sought to determine if a durable bilayer implant composed of trabecular metal with autologous periosteum on top would be suitable to reconstitute large osteochondral defects. This design would allow for secure implant fixation, subsequent integration and remodeling. Adult sheep were randomly assigned to one of three groups (n = 8/group): 1. trabecular metal/periosteal graft (TMPG), 2. trabecular metal (TM), 3. empty defect (ED). Cartilage and bone healing were assessed macroscopically, biochemically (type II collagen, sulfated glycosaminoglycan (sGAG) and double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) content) and histologically. Objectives

The use of large-diameter metal-on-metal (MoM)
components in total hip arthroplasty (THA) is associated with an increased
risk of early failure due to adverse local tissue reaction to metal
debris (ARMD) in response to the release of metal ions from the
bearing couple and/or head-neck taper corrosion. The aim of this
paper was to present a review of the incidence and natural history
of ARMD and the forms of treatment, with a focus on the need for
and extent of resection or debulking of the pseudotumour. An illustrative
case report is presented of a patient with an intra-pelvic pseudotumour
associated with a large diameter MoM THA, which was treated successfully
with revision of the bearing surface to a dual mobility couple and
retention of the well-fixed acetabular and femoral components. The
pseudotumour was left Cite this article:
We aimed to identify the pattern of nerve injury associated with
paediatric supracondylar fractures of the humerus. Over a 17 year period, between 1996 and 2012, 166 children were
referred to our specialist peripheral nerve injury unit. From examination
of the medical records and radiographs were recorded the nature
of the fracture, associated vascular and neurological injury, treatment
provided and clinical course.Aims

The case histories of these Black Notley patients show that no serious harmful effects have been caused by pregnancies going to full term. Most of the patients had normal confinements; Caesarian sections were few and were usually done for obstetric reasons, not for fear of reactivation of the disease. This experience bears out a remark made to me by Marcel Galland. When asked if Caesarian sections were required for women who became pregnant after treatment at Berck for skeletal tuberculosis, he replied: "Jarnais! Tout passe!". Two patients in the series had artificial abortions, and one aborted spontaneously. Two of these three patients did not do as well as other patients whose pregnancies went to full term. Quite another question is whether the onset of skeletal tuberculosis sooii after pregnancy may be attributed to the pregnancy. In a group of women of child-bearing age, it would be difficult to distinguish between post hoc and propter hoc in considering this question. One patient of this series, H. Q. (Case 25), was admitted eight months pregnant with active tuberculosis of the knee; but pain in the joint had started fifteen months before admission, and the onset of disease no doubt preceded the pregnancy. Some of the patients admitted to Black Notley were mothers of young children hut there is no note of any pregnancy having preceded the onset of tuberculosis by a short interval. The follow-up reports of the married patients compare favourably with those of the unmarried. Further, it may be argued that pregnancy increases resistance to tuberculosis. Such a belief was current from the time of Hippocrates until the middle of the nineteenth century, and clinical evidence can be quoted in favour of such a view. In America, Lyman (1943) followed up 1,818 women who had been treated for tuberculosis in a sanatorium; many had married despite medical advice to the contrary. Lyman found that the late results of treatment were four times as good in the married patients as in the single women. Lyman says, "When we consider that the married group established this record in spite of the fact that 192 out of 315 gave histories of pregnancies (averaging 2·25 children each), it is clear that some factor not yet accounted for has exerted a profound influence in their cases.". I have speculated elsewhere as to what this factor may be (Wilkinson 1949). But it seems clear that increased sterol circulation in the body is associated with increased reticulo-endothelial activity (Fraser 1935). Thus reticulo-endothelial proliferation has been observed in the

The aims of this study were to analyse the long-term outcome
of vascularised fibular graft (VFG) reconstruction after tumour
resection and to evaluate the usefulness of the method. We retrospectively reviewed 49 patients who had undergone resection
of a sarcoma and reconstruction using a VFG between 1988 and 2015.
Their mean follow-up was 98 months (5 to 317). Reconstruction was
with an osteochondral graft (n = 13), intercalary graft (n = 12),
inlay graft (n = 4), or resection arthrodesis (n = 20). We analysed
the oncological and functional outcome, and the rate of bony union
and complications.Aims
