Aims. The purpose of this study was to determine if clinical and radiological
surveillance of cartilage tumours with low biological activity is
appropriate. Patients and Methods. A total of 98 patients with an intramedullary cartilage neoplasm
in a long bone met our inclusion criteria and were included in the
study. These patients had undergone a total of 384 scans. Patients

Aims. This multicentre, retrospective study aimed to improve our knowledge
of primary pyogenic spinal infections in children by analyzing a
large consecutive case series. Patients and Methods. The medical records of children with such an infection, treated
at four tertiary institutions between 2004 and 2014, were analyzed
retrospectively. Epidemiological, clinical, paraclinical,
Osteopetrosis (OP) is a rare hereditary disease that causes reduced bone resorption and increased bone density as a result of osteoclastic function defect. Our aim is to review the difficulties, mid-term follow-up results, and literature encountered during the treatment of OP. This is a retrospective and observational study containing data from nine patients with a mean age of 14.1 years (9 to 25; three female, six male) with OP who were treated in our hospital between April 2008 and October 2018 with 20 surgical procedures due to 17 different fractures. Patient data included age, sex, operating time, length of stay, genetic type of the disease, previous surgery, fractures, complications, and comorbidity.Aims

Aims. We performed a systematic review of the current literature regarding
the outcomes of unconstrained metacarpophalangeal joint (MCPJ) arthroplasty. Materials and Methods. We initially identified 1305 studies, and 406 were found to be
duplicates. After exclusion criteria were applied, seven studies
were included. Outcomes extracted included pre- and post-operative
pain visual analogue scores, range of movement (ROM), strength of
pinch and grip, satisfaction and patient reported outcome measures
(PROMs). Clinical and
The use of ilioischial cage reconstruction for
pelvic discontinuity has been replaced by the Trabecular Metal (Zimmer,
Warsaw, Indiana) cup-cage technique in our institution, due to the
unsatisfactory outcome of using a cage alone in this situation.
We report the outcome of 26 pelvic discontinuities in 24 patients
(20 women and four men, mean age 65 years (44 to 84)) treated by
the cup-cage technique at a mean follow-up of 82 months (12 to 113)
and compared them with a series of 19 pelvic discontinuities in
19 patients (18 women and one man, mean age 70 years (42 to 86))
treated with a cage at a mean follow-up of 69 months (1 to 170).

This exploratory randomized controlled trial (RCT) aimed to determine the splint-related outcomes when using the novel biodegradable wood-composite splint (Woodcast) compared to standard synthetic fibreglass (Dynacast) for the immobilization of undisplaced upper limb fractures in children. An exploratory RCT was performed at a tertiary paediatric referral hospital between 1 June 2018 and 30 September 2019. The intention-to-treat population consisted of 170 patients (mean age 8.42 years (SD 3.42); Woodcast (WCG), n = 84, 57 male (67.9%); Dynacast (DNG), n = 86, 58 male (67.4%)). Patients with undisplaced upper limb fractures were randomly assigned to WCG or DNG treatment groups. Primary outcome was the stress stability of the splint material, defined as absence of any deformations or fractures within the splint during study period. Secondary outcomes included patient satisfaction and medical staff opinion. Additionally, biomechanical and chemical analysis of the splint samples was carried out.Aims

Hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) is typically indicated for young and active patients. Due to the longevity of arthroplasty, these patients are likely to undergo revision surgery during their lifetime. There is a paucity of information on the long-term outcome of revision surgeries performed after failed HRA. The aim of our study was to provide survivorship data as well as clinical scores after HRA revisions. A total of 42 patients (43 hips) were revised after HRA at our centre to a variety of devices, including four HRA and 39 total hip arthroplasties (THAs). In addition to perioperative complications, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) hip scores and 12-Item Short-Form Health Survey questionnaire (SF-12) quality of life scores were collected at follow-up visits after the primary HRA and after revision surgery.Aims

Unstable bicondylar tibial plateau fractures
are rare and there is little guidance in the literature as to the
best form of treatment. We examined the short- to medium-term outcome
of this injury in a consecutive series of patients presenting to
two trauma centres. Between December 2005 and May 2010, a total
of 55 fractures in 54 patients were treated by fixation, 34 with
peri-articular locking plates and 21 with limited access direct
internal fixation in combination with circular external fixation
using a Taylor Spatial Frame (TSF). At a minimum of one year post-operatively,
patient-reported outcome measures including the WOMAC index and
SF-36 scores showed functional deficits, although there was no significant
difference between the two forms of treatment. Despite low outcome scores,
patients were generally satisfied with the outcome. We achieved
good clinical and
We aimed to evaluate the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in children with supracondylar humeral fractures (SCHFs), who were treated following the recommendations of the Paediatric Comprehensive AO Classification, and to assess if HRQoL was associated with AO fracture classification, or fixation with a lateral external fixator compared with closed reduction and percutaneous pinning (CRPP). We were able to follow-up on 775 patients (395 girls, 380 boys) who sustained a SCHF from 2004 to 2017. Patients completed questionnaires including the Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire (QuickDASH; primary outcome), and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL).Aims

Aims. A failed total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) is often associated with
much bone loss. As an alternative to arthrodesis, the surgeon may
consider a custom-made talar component to compensate for the bone
loss. Our aim in this study was to assess the functional and radiological
outcome after the use of such a component at mid- to long-term follow-up. Patients and Methods. A total of 12 patients (five women and seven men, mean age 53
years; 36 to77) with a failed TAA and a large talar defect underwent
a revision procedure using a custom-made talar component. The design
of the custom-made components was based on CT scans and standard
radiographs, when compared with the contralateral ankle. After the
anterior talocalcaneal joint was fused, the talar component was
introduced and fixed to the body of the calcaneum. Results. At a mean follow-up of 6.9 years (1 to 13), 11 ankles were stable

Stiffness is a common complication after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Pathogenesis is not understood, treatment options are limited, and diagnosis is challenging. The aim of this study was to investigate if MRI can be used to visualize intra-articular scarring in patients with stiff, painful knee arthroplasties. Well-functioning primary TKAs (n = 11), failed non-fibrotic TKAs (n = 5), and patients with a clinical diagnosis of fibrosisAims
