Our aim was to determine the precision of the measurements of bone mineral density (BMD) by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry in the proximal

Patients and Methods
The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of implant placement when using robotic assistance during total hip arthroplasty (THA). A total of 20 patients underwent a planned THA using preoperative CT scans and robotic-assisted software. There were nine men and 11 women (n = 20 hips) with a mean age of 60.8 years (Aims
Patients and Methods
Drawing upon a total experience of 450 hips affected by established congenital dislocation or subluxation, the author presents the long-term results in 177 hips treated for the first time between the ages of nine months and three and a half years, in support of his contention that surgical endeavour should in the first place be directed towards the limbus and upper end of
One hundred and sixty-four cases of intramedullary nailing of the long bones have been studied with special reference to the difficulties and complications encountered. There was one death not attributable to the method. Two cases of pulmonal fat embolism and one case of thrombosis occurred, all in fractures of the
The objectives of this study were to compare postoperative pain, analgesia requirements, inpatient functional rehabilitation, time to hospital discharge, and complications in patients undergoing conventional jig-based unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) This prospective cohort study included 146 patients with symptomatic medial compartment knee osteoarthritis undergoing primary UKA performed by a single surgeon. This included 73 consecutive patients undergoing conventional jig-based mobile bearing UKA, followed by 73 consecutive patients receiving robotic-arm assisted fixed bearing UKA. All surgical procedures were performed using the standard medial parapatellar approach for UKA, and all patients underwent the same postoperative rehabilitation programme. Postoperative pain scores on the numerical rating scale and opiate analgesia consumption were recorded until discharge. Time to attainment of predefined functional rehabilitation outcomes, hospital discharge, and postoperative complications were recorded by independent observers.Aims
Patients and Methods
The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential for achieving local and systemic control after local recurrence of a chondrosarcoma of bone A total of 126 patients with local recurrence (LR) of chondrosarcoma (CS) of the pelvis or a limb bone were identified from a prospectively maintained database, between 1990 and 2015 at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham, United Kingdom. There were 44 female patients (35%) and 82 male patients (65%) with a mean age at the time of LR of 56 years (13 to 96). The 126 patients represented 24.3% of the total number of patients with a primary CS (519) who had been treated during this period. Clinical data collected at the time of primary tumour and LR included the site (appendicular, extremity, or pelvis); primary and LR tumour size (in centimetres); type of operation at the time of primary or LR (limb-salvage or amputation); surgical margin achieved at resection of the primary tumour and the LR; grade of the primary tumour and the LR; gender; age; and oncological outcomes, including local recurrence-free survival and disease-specific survival. A minimum two years’ follow-up and complete histopathology records were available for all patients included in the study.Aims
Patients and Methods
The purpose of this multicentre observational study was to investigate the association between intraoperative component positioning and soft-tissue balancing on short-term clinical outcomes in patients undergoing robotic-arm assisted unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA). Between 2013 and 2016, 363 patients (395 knees) underwent robotic-arm assisted UKAs at two centres. Pre- and postoperatively, patients were administered Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Score (KOOS) and Forgotten Joint Score-12 (FJS-12). Results were stratified as “good” and “bad” if KOOS/FJS-12 were more than or equal to 80. Intraoperative, post-implantation robotic data relative to CT-based components placement were collected and classified. Postoperative complications were recorded.Aims
Patients and Methods
A variety of surgical approaches are used for total hip arthroplasty (THA), all with reported advantages and disadvantages. A number of common complications can occur following THA regardless of the approach used. The purpose of this study was to compare five commonly used surgical approaches with respect to the incidence of surgery-related complications. The electronic medical records of all patients who underwent primary elective THA at a single large-volume arthroplasty centre, between 2011 and 2016, with at least two years of follow-up, were reviewed. After exclusion, 3574 consecutive patients were included in the study. There were 1571 men (44.0%) and 2003 women (56.0%). Their mean age and body mass index (BMI) was 63.0 years (Aims

We investigated the effect of progesterone on the nerve during lengthening of the limb in rats. The sciatic nerves of rats were elongated by leg lengthening for ten days at 3 mm per day. On alternate days between the day after the operation and nerve dissection, the progesterone-treated group received subcutaneous injections of 1 mg progesterone in sesame oil and the control group received oil only. On the fifth, tenth and 17th day, the sciatic nerves were excised at the midpoint of the

Post-natal vasculogenesis, the process by which vascular committed bone marrow stem cells or endothelial precursor cells migrate, differentiate and incorporate into the nacent endothelium and thereby contribute to physiological and pathological neurovascularisation, has stimulated much interest. Its contribution to neovascularisation of tumours, wound healing and revascularisation associated with ischaemia of skeletal and cardiac muscles is well established. We evaluated the responses of endothelial precursor cells in bone marrow to musculoskeletal trauma in mice. Bone marrow from six C57 Black 6 mice subjected to a standardised, closed fracture of the
There are few medium- and long-term data on the outcome of the use of proximal femoral structural allografts in revision hip arthroplasty. This is a study of a consecutive series of 40 proximal femoral allografts performed for failed total hip replacements using the same technique with a minimum follow-up of five years (mean 8.8 years; range 5 to 11.5 years). In all cases the stem was cemented into both the allograft and the host
1. In fifteen patients with unilateral osteoarthritis of the hip bilateral measurements of the intraosseous pressure of the femoral neck and determination of femoral vein pressure were done simultaneously. These pressure examinations were followed by bilateral intraosseous phlebography of the proximal part of the
1. The results of fifty-three operations in forty adults with a persistent congenital dislocation of the hip have been reviewed. 2. Arthrodesis as a primary operation was successful in five of six patients, giving a pain-free hip and good function. After an arthroplasty or an osteotomy that had failed to relieve symptoms it was successful in only one patient. 3. Cup arthroplasty on one hip relieved pain in five of nine patients, giving an increase in functional activity, although the range of hip movement was often disappointing. Bilateral cup arthroplasty, performed in four patients, gave partial relief in three, but did not permit an increase in activity. 4. High osteotomy of the
A study of limb shortening after poliomyelitis in 225 children in whom paralysis was confined to one leg shows:. 1. The paralysed leg became shorter than its fellow in 219 patients (97 per cent). 2. The discrepancy in leg length only once exceeded three and a half inches. 3. Both the tibia and the
The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of a salvage procedure using a 95° angled blade plate for failed osteosynthesis of atypical subtrochanteric femoral fractures associated with the long-term use of bisphosphonates. These were compared with those for failed osteosynthesis of subtrochanteric fractures not associated with bisphosphonate treatment. Between October 2008 and July 2016, 14 patients with failed osteosynthesis of an atypical subtrochanteric femoral fracture were treated with a blade plate (atypical group). Their mean age was 67.8 years (60 to 74); all were female. During the same period, 21 patients with failed osteosynthesis of a typical subtrochanteric fracture underwent restabilization using a blade plate (typical group). Outcome variables included the time of union, postoperative complications, Harris Hip Score, and Sanders functional rating scale.Aims
