Preoperative talar valgus deformity ≥ 15° is considered a contraindication for total ankle arthroplasty (TAA). We compared operative procedures and clinical outcomes of TAA in patients with talar valgus deformity ≥ 15° and < 15°. A matched cohort of patients similar for demographics and components used but differing in preoperative coronal-plane tibiotalar valgus deformity ≥ 15° (valgus, n = 50; 52% male, mean age 65.8 years (SD 10.3), mean body mass index (BMI) 29.4 (SD 5.2)) or < 15° (control, n = 50; 58% male, mean age 65.6 years (SD 9.8), mean BMI 28.7 (SD 4.2)), underwent TAA by one surgeon. Femoroacetabular impingement is a cause of hip pain in adults and is potentially a precursor of osteoarthritis. Our aim in this study was to determine the prevalence of bilateral deformity in patients with symptomatic cam-type femoroacetabular impingement as well as the presence of associated acetabular abnormalities and hip pain. We included all patients aged 55 years or less seen by the senior author for hip pain, with at least one anteroposterior and lateral pelvic radiograph available. All patients with dysplasia and/or arthritis were excluded. A total of 113 patients with a symptomatic cam-impingement deformity of at least one hip was evaluated. There were 82 men and 31 women with a mean age of 37.9 years (16 to 55). Bilateral cam-type deformity was present in 88 patients (77.8%) while only 23 of those (26.1%) had bilateral hip pain. It has recently been reported that the transverse
acetabular ligament (TAL) is helpful in determining the position
of the acetabular component in total hip replacement (THR). In this
study we used a computer-assisted navigation system to determine
whether the TAL is useful as a landmark in THR. The study was carried
out in 121 consecutive patients undergoing primary THR (134 hips),
including 67 dysplastic hips (50%). There were 26 men (29 hips)
and 95 women (105 hips) with a mean age of 60.2 years (17 to 82)
at the time of operation. After identification of the TAL, its anteversion
was measured intra-operatively by aligning the inferomedial rim
of the trial acetabular component with the TAL using computer-assisted
navigation. The TAL was identified in 112 hips (83.6%). Intra-observer reproducibility
in the measurement of anteversion of the TAL was high, but inter-observer

Aims. The aim of this study was to evaluate improvements in the quality
and safety of paediatric spinal surgery following the implementation
of a specialist Paediatric Spinal Surgical Team (PSST) in the operating
theatre. Patients and Methods. A retrospective consecutive case study of paediatric spinal operations
before (between January 2008 and December 2009), and after (between
January 2012 and December 2013) the implementation of PSST, was
performed. A comparative analysis of outcome variables including
surgical site infection (SSI), operating time (ORT), blood loss (BL),
length of stay (LOS), unplanned staged procedures (USP) and transfusion
rates (allogenic and cell-saver) was performed between the two groups.

of the joint during total knee replacement (TKR). Activities of daily
living demand mechanical loading to the knee joint, not only in
full extension, but also in mid-flexion. The purpose of this study
was to compare the varus-valgus stability throughout flexion in
knees treated with either cruciate-retaining or posterior-stabilised
TKR, using an intra-operative navigation technique. A total of 34

Noninvasive pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) devices have been approved for treatment of long-bone fracture nonunions and as an adjunct to lumbar and cervical spine fusion surgery. This study aimed to assess the effect of continuous PEMF on postoperative RC healing in a rat RC repair model. A total of 30 Wistar rats underwent acute bilateral supraspinatus tear and repair. Spinal deformity surgery carries the risk of neurological injury. Neurophysiological monitoring allows early identification of intraoperative cord injury which enables early intervention resulting in a better prognosis. Although multimodal monitoring is the ideal, resource constraints make surgeon-directed intraoperative transcranial motor evoked potential (TcMEP) monitoring a useful compromise. Our experience using surgeon-directed TcMEP is presented in terms of viability, safety, and efficacy. We carried out a retrospective review of a single surgeon’s prospectively maintained database of cases in which TcMEP monitoring had been used between 2010 and 2017. The upper limbs were used as the control. A true alert was recorded when there was a 50% or more loss of amplitude from the lower limbs with maintained upper limb signals. The most important complication of treatment of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head, which can result in proximal femoral growth disturbances leading to pain, dysfunction, and eventually to early onset osteoarthritis. In this study, we aimed to identify morphological variants in hip joint development that are predictive of a poor outcome. We retrospectively reviewed all patients who developed AVN after DDH treatment, either by closed and/or open reduction, at a single institution between 1984 and 2007 with a minimal follow-up of eight years. Standard pelvis radiographs obtained at ages one, two, three, five, and eight years, and at latest follow-up were retrieved. The Bucholz-Ogden classification was used to determine the type of AVN on all radiographs. Poor outcome was defined by Severin classification grade 3 or above on the latest follow-up radiographs and/or the need for secondary surgery. With statistical shape modelling, we identified the different shape variants of the hip at each age. Logistic regression analysis was used to associate the different modes or shape variants with poor outcome.Aims

The aim of this study was to define the complications and long-term outcome following adolescent mid-shaft clavicular fracture. We retrospectively reviewed a consecutive series of 677 adolescent fractures in 671 patients presenting to our region (age 13 to 17 years) over a ten-year period (2009 to 2019). Long-term patient-reported outcomes (abbreviated version of the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (QuickDASH) score and EuroQol five-dimension three-level (EQ-5D-3L) quality of life score) were undertaken at a mean of 6.4 years (1.2 to 11.3) following injury in severely displaced mid-shaft fractures (Edinburgh 2B) and angulated mid-shaft fractures (Edinburgh 2A2) at a minimum of one year post-injury. outcomes after revision anatomical ankle ligament reconstruction
augmented with suture tape for a failed modified Broström procedure. Patients and Methods. A total of 30 patients with persistent instability of the ankle
after a Broström procedure underwent revision augmented with suture
tape. Of these, 24 patients who were followed up for more than two
years were included in the study. There were 13 men and 11 women.

The aim of this study was to compare the biomechanical stability and clinical outcome of external fixator combined with limited internal fixation (EFLIF) and open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) in treating Sanders type 2 calcaneal fractures. Methods. Two types of fixation systems were selected for finite element analysis and a dual cohort study. Two fixation systems were simulated to fix the fracture in a finite element model. The relative displacement and stress distribution were analysed and compared. A total of 71 consecutive patients with closed Sanders type 2 calcaneal fractures were enrolled and divided into two groups according to the treatment to which they chose: the EFLIF group and the ORIF group. Restoration of proximal medial femoral support is the keystone in the treatment of intertrochanteric fractures. None of the available implants are effective in constructing the medial femoral support. Medial sustainable nail (MSN-II) is a novel cephalomedullary nail designed for this. In this study, biomechanical difference between MSN-II and proximal femoral nail anti-rotation (PFNA-II) was compared to determine whether or not MSN-II can effectively reconstruct the medial femoral support. radiological parameters of femoral component alignment of the Oxford
Phase 3 unicompartmental knee replacement (UKR), and evaluate their
effect on clinical outcome. Multiple regression analysis was used
to examine the relative contributions of the radiological assessment
of femoral component alignment in 189 consecutive UKRs performed
by a single surgeon. The American Knee Society scores were compared
between groups, defined as being within or outside recommended tolerances
of the position of the femoral component. For the flexion/extension
position 21 UKRs (11.1%) lay outside the recommended limits, and for

studies focused on FAI-related morphological assessment in Asian
