Osteoarthritis (OA) is caused by complex interactions between genetic and environmental factors. Epigenetic mechanisms control the expression of genes and are likely to regulate the OA transcriptome. We performed integrative genomic analyses to define methylation-gene expression relationships in osteoarthritic cartilage. Genome-wide DNA methylation profiling of articular cartilage from five patients with OA of the knee and five healthy controls was conducted using the Illumina Infinium HumanMethylation450 BeadChip (Illumina, San Diego, California). Other independent genome-wide mRNA expression profiles of articular cartilage from three patients with OA and three healthy controls were obtained from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. The objective of this study was to assess all evidence comparing the Thompson monoblock hemiarthroplasty with modular unipolar implants for patients requiring hemiarthroplasty of the hip with respect to mortality and complications. A literature search was performed to identify all relevant literature. The population consisted of patients undergoing hemiarthroplasty of the hip for fracture. The intervention was hemiarthroplasty of the hip with a comparison between Thompson and modular unipolar prostheses. Pubmed, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, PROSPERO and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. The study designs included were randomised controlled trials (RCTs), well designed case control studies and retrospective or prospective cohort studies. To validate the precision of digitally reconstructed radiograph (DRR) radiostereometric analysis (RSA) and the model-based method (MBM) RSA with respect to benchmark marker-based (MM) RSA for evaluation of kinematics in the native hip joint. Seven human cadaveric hemipelves were CT scanned and bone models were segmented. Tantalum beads were placed in the pelvis and proximal femoral bone. RSA recordings of the hips were performed during flexion, adduction and internal rotation. Stereoradiographic recordings were all analyzed with DRR, MBM and MM. The primary aim of this study was to assess the rate of patient
satisfaction one year after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) according
to the focus of the question asked. The secondary aims were to identify
independent predictors of patient satisfaction according to the
focus of the question. A retrospective cohort of 2521 patients undergoing a primary
unilateral TKA were identified from an established regional arthroplasty
database. Patient demographics, comorbidities, Western Ontario and
McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and 12-Item Short-Form
Health Survey (SF-12) scores were collected preoperatively and one
year postoperatively. Patient satisfaction was assessed using four

The aim of this study was to present a series of patients with
aseptic failure of a total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) who were treated
with fusion of the hindfoot using a nail. A total of 23 TAAs, in 22 patients, were revised for aseptic
loosening and balloon osteolysis to a hindfoot fusion by a single
surgeon (NH) between January 2012 and August 2014. The procedure
was carried out without bone graft using the Phoenix, Biomet Hindfoot
Arthrodesis Nail. Preoperative investigations included full blood
count, CRP and ESR, and radiological investigations including plain
radiographs and CT scans. Postoperative plain radiographs were assessed

Surgical site infection (SSI) is a common complication of surgery
with an incidence of about 1% in the United Kingdom. Sutures can
lead to the development of a SSI, as micro-organisms can colonize
the suture as it is implanted. Triclosan-coated sutures, being antimicrobical,
were developed to reduce the rate of SSI. Our aim was to assess
whether triclosan-coated sutures cause a reduction in SSIs following
arthroplasty of the hip and knee. This two-arm, parallel, double-blinded study involved 2546 patients
undergoing elective total hip (THA) and total knee arthroplasty
(TKA) at three hospitals. A total of 1323 were quasi-randomized
to a standard suture group, and 1223 being quasi-randomized to the
triclosan-coated suture group. The primary endpoint was the rate

The treatment of osteoporotic fractures is a major challenge, and the enhancement of healing is critical as a major goal in modern fracture management. Most osteoporotic fractures occur at the metaphyseal bone region but few models exist and the healing is still poorly understood. A systematic review was conducted to identify and analyse the appropriateness of current osteoporotic metaphyseal fracture animal models. A literature search was performed on the Pubmed, Embase, and Web of Science databases, and relevant articles were selected. A total of 19 studies were included. is predicted to increase rapidly during the next 20 years. Accompanying
this is the dilemma of how to follow-up these patients appropriately.
Current guidelines recommend long-term follow-up to identify patients
with aseptic loosening, which can occur more than a decade postoperatively.
The current guidelines and practices of orthopaedic surgeons vary
widely. Existing models take up much clinical time and are expensive.
Pilot studies using ‘virtual’ clinics and advanced-practice physiotherapists
have shown promise in decreasing the time and costs for orthopaedic surgeons
