We studied 40 patients in whom the patella was not severely deformed and who were undergoing primary total knee arthroplasty (TKA) for osteoarthritis by one surgeon using one type of prosthesis. They were randomly allocated either to have the patella retained or resurfaced with a cemented, all-polyethylene component regardless of the state of the patellar articular cartilage. Apart from removal of osteophytes, no surgery was undertaken on the retained patellae. All 38 surviving patients were evaluated at three years using the HSS knee score and a new, specifically designed Patellar score (maximum score of 30). No

Bland–Altman limits of agreement were -9.4° to 8.6° with a repeatability
coefficient of 9.0°. The Bland–Altman plot showed a tendency for the
radiological measurement to indicate a higher level of pre-operative
deformity than the corresponding navigation measurement. Post-implant
limits of agreement were -5.0° to 5.4° with a repeatability coefficient
of 5.2°. The tendency for valgus knees to have greater deformity
on the radiograph was still seen, but was weaker for varus knees. . The alignment seen or measured intra-operatively during
The aim of this independent multicentre study was to assess the

(UKA) for isolated lateral osteoarthritis of the knee joint. We retrospectively evaluated 363 consecutive, lateral UKAs (346
patients) performed using the Oxford domed lateral prosthesis undertaken
in three high-volume knee arthroplasty centres between 2006 and
2014. Mean age of the patients at surgery was 65 years (36 to 88)

It is increasingly appreciated that coordinated regulation of angiogenesis and osteogenesis is needed for bone formation. How this regulation is achieved during peri-implant bone healing, such as osseointegration, is largely unclear. This study examined the relationship between angiogenesis and osteogenesis in a unique model of osseointegration of a mouse tibial implant by pharmacologically blocking the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) pathway. An implant was inserted into the right tibia of 16-week-old female C57BL/6 mice (n = 38). Mice received anti-VEGF receptor-1 (VEGFR-1) antibody (25 mg/kg) and VEGF receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) antibody (25 mg/kg; n = 19) or an isotype control antibody (n = 19). Flow cytometric (n = 4/group) and immunofluorescent (n = 3/group) analyses were performed at two weeks post-implantation to detect the distribution and density of CD31hiEMCNhi endothelium. RNA sequencing analysis was performed using sorted CD31hiEMCNhi endothelial cells (n = 2/group). Osteoblast lineage cells expressing osterix (OSX) and osteopontin (OPN) were also detected with immunofluorescence. Mechanical pull-out testing (n = 12/group) was used at four weeks post-implantation to determine the strength of the bone-implant interface. After pull-out testing, the tissue attached to the implant surface was harvested. Whole mount immunofluorescent staining of OSX and OPN was performed to determine the amount of osteoblast lineage cells.Aims

A total of 370 consecutive primary total knee replacements performed for osteoarthritis were followed up prospectively at 6, 18, 36 and 60 months. The Knee Society score and complications (perioperative mortality, superficial and deep wound infection, deep-vein thrombosis and revision rate) were recorded. By dividing the study sample into subgroups based on the body mass index overall, the body mass index in female patients and the absolute body-weight. The outcome in obese and non-obese patients was compared. A repeated measures analysis of variance showed no difference in the Knee Society score between the subgroups. There was no statistically-significant difference in the complication rates for the subgroups studied. Obesity did not influence the clinical outcome five years after
