Hip resurfacing is being performed more frequently in the United Kingdom. The possible benefits include more accurate restoration of leg length, femoral offset and femoral anteversion than occurs after
Aims. The stability of cementless acetabular components is an important
factor for surgical planning in the treatment of patients with pelvic
osteolysis after
There is conflicting evidence on the safety of intra-articular injections of hyaluronic acid (HA) or corticosteroids (CSs) before total knee arthroplasty (TKA). We performed a meta-analysis of the relationship between intra-articular injections and subsequent infection rates after TKA. We searched PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library for cohort studies that assessed the effect of preoperative injection of drugs into the joint cavity on the infection rate after TKA. The outcomes analyzed included the total infection rate, as well as those for different preoperative injection time periods and different drugs.Aims

Aim. Until now, there has been no consensus as to whether stemmed
acetabular components are appropriate for use in patients undergoing

Hip arthroplasty aims to accurately recreate joint biomechanics. Considerable attention has been paid to vertical and horizontal offset, but femoral head centre in the anteroposterior (AP) plane has received little attention. This study investigates the accuracy of restoration of joint centre of rotation in the AP plane. Postoperative CT scans of 40 patients who underwent unilateral uncemented total hip arthroplasty were analyzed. Anteroposterior offset (APO) and femoral anteversion were measured on both the operated and non-operated sides. Sagittal tilt of the femoral stem was also measured. APO measured on axial slices was defined as the perpendicular distance between a line drawn from the anterior most point of the proximal femur (anterior reference line) to the centre of the femoral head. The anterior reference line was made parallel to the posterior condylar axis of the knee to correct for rotation.Aims

Perthes’ disease (PD) often results in femoral head deformity and leg length discrepancy (LLD). Our objective was to analyze femoral morphology in PD patients at skeletal maturity to assess where the LLD originates, and evaluate the effect of contralateral epiphysiodesis for length equalization on proximal and subtrochanteric femoral lengths. All patients treated for PD in our institution between January 2013 and June 2020 were reviewed retrospectively. Patients with unilateral PD, LLD of ≥ 5 mm, and long-leg standing radiographs at skeletal maturity were included. Total leg length, femoral and tibial length, articulotrochanteric distance (ATD), and subtrochanteric femoral length were compared between PD side and the unaffected side. Furthermore, we compared leg length measurements between patients who did and who did not have a contralateral epiphysiodesis.Aims

Aims. Joint-preserving surgery of the hip (JPSH) has evolved considerably
and now includes a number of procedures, including arthroscopy,
surgical dislocation, and redirectional osteotomies of the femur
and acetabulum. There are a number of different factors which lead
to failure of JPSH. Consequently, it is of interest to assess the
various modes of failure in order to continue to identify best practice
and the indications for these procedures. . Patients and Methods. Using a retrospective observational study design, we reviewed
1013 patients who had undergone JPSH by a single surgeon between
2005 and 2015. There were 509 men and 504 women with a mean age
of 39 years (16 to 78). Of the 1013 operations, 783 were arthroscopies,
122 surgical dislocations, and 108 peri-acetabular osteotomies (PAO).
We analysed the overall failure rates and modes of failure. Re-operations
were categorised into four groups: Mode 1 was arthritis progression
or organ failure leading to
In this retrospective observational cohort study,
we describe 17 patients out of 1775 treated for various fractures who
developed mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection after surgery.
The cohort comprised 15 men and two women with a mean age of 40
years (24 to 70). A total of ten fractures were open and seven were
closed. Of these, seven patients underwent intramedullary nailing
of a fracture of the long bone, seven had fractures fixed with plates,
two with Kirschner-wires and screws, and one had a hemiarthroplasty
of the hip with an Austin Moore prosthesis. All patients were followed-up
for two years. In all patients, the infection resolved, and in 14
the fractures united. Nonunion was seen in two patients one of whom
underwent two-stage
Objectives. We have increased the dose of tranexamic acid (TXA) in our enhanced total joint recovery protocol at our institution from 15 mg/kg to 30 mg/kg (maximum 2.5 g) as a single, intravenous (IV) dose. We report the clinical effect of this dosage change. Methods. We retrospectively compared two cohorts of consecutive patients undergoing
The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of first-generation annealed highly cross-linked polyethylene (HXLPE) in cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA). We retrospectively evaluated 29 patients (35 hips) who underwent THA between December 2000 and February 2002. The survival rate was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Hip joint function was evaluated using the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score. Two-dimensional polyethylene wear was estimated using Martell’s Hip Analysis Suite. We calculated the wear rates between years 1 and 5, 5 and 10, 10 and 15, and 15 and final follow-up.Aims

Sarcopenia is characterized by a generalized progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and physical performance. This systematic review primarily evaluated the effects of sarcopenia on postoperative functional recovery and mortality in patients undergoing orthopaedic surgery, and secondarily assessed the methods used to diagnose and define sarcopenia in the orthopaedic literature. A systematic search was conducted in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Google Scholar databases according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Studies involving sarcopenic patients who underwent defined orthopaedic surgery and recorded postoperative outcomes were included. The quality of the criteria by which a diagnosis of sarcopenia was made was evaluated. The quality of the publication was assessed using Newcastle-Ottawa Scale.Aims
