The aim of this study was to investigate the structural integrity of torn and non-torn human acetabular labral tissue. A total of 47 human labral specimens were obtained from a biobank. These included 22 torn specimens and 25 control specimens from patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty with macroscopically normal labra. The specimens underwent dynamic shear analysis using a rheometer to measure storage modulus, as an indicator of structural integrity. Objectives
Methods
We conducted a study to identify factors that are prognostic
of the outcome of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) for calcific
tendinitis of the shoulder. Since 1998, patients with symptomatic calcific tendinitis of
the rotator cuff have been treated with ESWT using an electrohydraulic
mode shockwave device. One year after ESWT, patients were grouped
according to the level of resorption of calcification.Aims

For this retrospective cohort study, patients aged ≤ 30 years
(very young) who underwent total hip arthroplasty (THA) were compared
with patients aged ≥ 60 years (elderly) to evaluate the rate of
revision arthroplasty, implant survival, the indications for revision,
the complications, and the patient-reported outcomes. We retrospectively reviewed all patients who underwent primary
THA between January 2000 and May 2015 from our institutional database.
A total of 145 very young and 1359 elderly patients were reviewed.
The mean follow-up was 5.3 years (1 to 18). Logistic generalized
estimating equations were used to compare characteristics and the revision
rate. Survival was evaluated using Kaplan–Meier curves and hazard
rates were created using Cox regression.Aims

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of miR-126 in the development of osteoarthritis, as well as the potential molecular mechanisms involved, in order to provide a theoretical basis for osteoarthritis treatment and a novel perspective for clinical therapy. Human chondrocyte cell line CHON-001 was administrated by different doses of interleukin (IL)-1β to simulate inflammation. Cell viability, migration, apoptosis, IL-6, IL-8, and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α expression, as well as expression of apoptosis-related factors, were measured to assess inflammation. miR-126 expression was measured by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Cells were then transfected with miR-126 inhibitor to assess the effect of miR-126 on IL-1β-injured CHON-001 cells. Expression of B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) and the activity of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) / Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling pathway were measured by Western blot to explore the underlying mechanism through which miR-126 affects IL-1β-induced inflammation. Objectives
Methods
Although we often encounter patients with an aortic aneurysm
who also have diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH), there
are no reports to date of an association between these two conditions
and the pathogenesis of DISH remains unknown. This study therefore
evaluated the prevalence of DISH in patients with a thoracic aortic
aneurysm (AA). The medical records of 298 patients who underwent CT scans for
a diagnosis of an AA or following high-energy trauma were retrospectively
examined. A total of 204 patients underwent surgery for an AA and
94 had a high-energy injury and formed the non-AA group. The prevalence
of DISH was assessed on CT scans of the chest and abdomen and the
relationship between DISH and AA by comparison between the AA and
non-AA groups.Aims

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence
has issued guidelines that state fusion for non-specific low back
pain should only be performed as part of a randomised controlled
trial, and that lumbar disc replacement should not be performed.
Thus, spinal fusion and disc replacement will no longer be routine
forms of treatment for patients with low back pain. This annotation
considers the evidence upon which these guidelines are based. Cite this article:
We aimed to retrospectively assess the accuracy and safety of
CT navigated pedicle screws and to compare accuracy in the cervical
and thoracic spine (C2-T8) with (COMB) and without (POST) prior
anterior surgery (anterior cervical discectomy or corpectomy and
fusion with ventral plating: ACDF/ACCF). A total of 592 pedicle screws, which were used in 107 consecutively
operated patients (210 COMB, 382 POST), were analysed. The accuracy
of positioning was determined according to the classification of
Gertzbein and Robbins on post-operative CT scans.Aims

Arthroscopically controlled fracture reduction in combination
with percutaneous screw fixation may be an alternative approach
to open surgery to treat talar neck fractures. The purpose of this
study was thus to present preliminary results on arthroscopically
reduced talar neck fractures. A total of seven consecutive patients (four women and three men,
mean age 39 years (19 to 61)) underwent attempted surgical treatment
of a closed Hawkins type II talar neck fracture using arthroscopically
assisted reduction and percutaneous screw fixation. Functional and
radiological outcome were assessed using plain radiographs, as well
as weight-bearing and non-weight-bearing CT scans as tolerated.
Patient satisfaction and pain sensation were also recorded.Aims

The aim of this study was to analyze the results of reverse shoulder
arthroplasty (RSA) in patients with type 1 sequelae of a fracture
of the proximal humerus in association with rotator cuff deficiency
or severe stiffness of the shoulder. A total of 38 patients were included: 28 women and ten men. Their
mean age at the time of arthroplasty was 73 years (54 to 91). Before
the RSA, 18 patients had been treated with open reduction and internal
fixation following a fracture. A total of 22 patients had a rotator
cuff tear and 11 had severe stiffness of the shoulder with < 0°
of external rotation. The mean follow-up was 4.3 years (1.5 to 10).
The Constant score and the range of movement of the shoulder were
recorded preoperatively and at final follow-up. Preoperatively, radiographs in two planes were performed, as
well as CT or arthro-CT scans; radiographs were also performed at
final follow-up.Aims

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term outcome
of adolescents with cerebral palsy who have undergone single-event
multilevel surgery for a flexed-knee gait, followed into young adulthood
using 3D motion analysis. A total of 59 young adults with spastic cerebral palsy, with
a mean age of 26 years (Aims

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a complex
3D deformity of the spine. Its prevalence is between 2% and 3% in the
general population, with almost 10% of patients requiring some form
of treatment and up to 0.1% undergoing surgery. The cosmetic aspect
of the deformity is the biggest concern to the patient and is often
accompanied by psychosocial distress. In addition, severe curves
can cause cardiopulmonary distress. With proven benefits from surgery,
the aims of treatment are to improve the cosmetic and functional
outcomes. Obtaining correction in the coronal plane is not the only
important endpoint anymore. With better understanding of spinal
biomechanics and the long-term effects of multiplanar imbalance,
we now know that sagittal balance is equally, if not more, important.
Better correction of deformities has also been facilitated by an
improvement in the design of implants and a better understanding
of metallurgy. Understanding the unique character of each deformity
is important. In addition, using the most appropriate implant and
applying all the principles of correction in a bespoke manner is important
to achieve optimum correction. In this article, we review the current concepts in AIS surgery. Cite this article:
Whilst gait speed is variable between healthy and injured adults, the extent to which speed alone alters the 3D A total of 26 men and 25 women (18 to 35 years old) participated in this study. Participants walked on a treadmill with the KneeKG system at a slow imposed speed (2 km/hr) for three trials, then at a self-selected comfortable walking speed for another three trials.
