During a six-year period (January 1996 to January 2002 ), we re-explored 60 interspaces (49 patients, 49 feet) for recurrence or persistent symptoms after one or more previous procedures for excision of an interdigital neuroma. Ten patients underwent concomitant excision of a primary neuroma from an adjacent interspace, and 19 underwent concomitant forefoot surgery. The mean follow-up was 39.7 months (6 to 79). Evaluation included review of records and radiographs, clinical assessment, and a questionnaire regarding satisfaction, pain, restriction of footwear and activity. In total, 15 patients (30.7%) were completely satisfied, 13 (26.5%) were satisfied with minor reservations, ten (20.4%) were satisfied with major reservations and 11 (22.4%) were dissatisfied with the
We reviewed 19 adults and 12 children who had been treated for avulsion fractures of the tibial spine. Adult injuries have not previously been reported at length; most were caused by road-traffic accidents, and 68% were associated with other injuries, of which 58% were around the knee. The higher incidence of associated injuries in adults as compared with children, indicates that the injury is the result of greater energy and perhaps a different mechanism. The worse
We analysed the long-term results of arthrodesis of the shoulder after infection in 15 patients. At the time of operation, 14 cultures were positive for Staphylococcus aureus. The mean follow-up was 8.3 years (3 to 14) and 90% of the patients were satisfied with the
The aim of this study was to assess the current available evidence
about when patients might resume driving after elective, primary
total hip (THA) or total knee arthroplasty (TKA) undertaken for
osteoarthritis (OA). In February 2016, EMBASE, MEDLINE, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane,
PubMed Publisher, CINAHL, EBSCO and Google Scholar were searched
for clinical studies reporting on ‘THA’, ‘TKA’, ‘car driving’, ‘reaction
time’ and ‘brake response time’. Two researchers (CAV and JJT) independently
screened the titles and abstracts for eligibility and assessed the
risk of bias. Both fixed and random effects were used to pool data
and calculate mean differences (MD) and 95% confidence intervals
(CI) between pre- and post-operative total brake response time (TBRT).Aims

We reviewed the results of anterior hip release for fixed flexion deformity in 57 hips in 38 children with spina bifida at an average follow-up of 8.9 years (2 to 22). The indication for this operation was a fixed flexion deformity of more than 30° which interfered with function. In 43 hips there was a good
Percutaneous nucleotomy is a relatively new technique for treating lumbar disc herniation. There is no agreement as to the volume of disc material to be removed. A long-term study of clinical and radiological data from patients treated by percutaneous nucleotomy was designed to identify the factors associated with favourable and unfavourable

We undertook a prospective randomised controlled trial involving 400 patients with a displaced intracapsular fracture of the hip to determine whether there was any difference in
The injured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is thought to exhibit an impaired healing response, and attempts at surgical repair have not been successful. Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) is reported to be associated with wound healing, probably through transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1). A rabbit ACL injury model was used to study the effect of CTGF on ligament recovery. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) was performed for detection of changes in RNA levels of TGF-β1, type 1 collagen (COL1), type 2 collagen (COL2), SRY-related high mobility group-box gene9 (SOX9), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) and matrix metallopeptidase 13 (MMP-13). Expression of related proteins was detected by Western blotting. Objectives
Methods
The aim of this study was to compare the biomechanical stability and clinical outcome of external fixator combined with limited internal fixation (EFLIF) and open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) in treating Sanders type 2 calcaneal fractures. Two types of fixation systems were selected for finite element analysis and a dual cohort study. Two fixation systems were simulated to fix the fracture in a finite element model. The relative displacement and stress distribution were analysed and compared. A total of 71 consecutive patients with closed Sanders type 2 calcaneal fractures were enrolled and divided into two groups according to the treatment to which they chose: the EFLIF group and the ORIF group. The radiological and clinical outcomes were evaluated and compared. Objectives
Methods
A contact patch to rim (CPR) distance of <
10 mm has been
associated with edge-loading and excessive wear. However, not all
arthroplasties with a low CPR distance show problems with wear.
Therefore, CPR distance may not be the only variable affecting the
post-operative metal ion concentrations. We used multiple logistic regression to determine what variables
differed between the patients who had high and low cobalt (CoS)
and chromium (CrS) serum ion concentrations within a cohort of patients
with low (<
10 mm) CPR distances. A total of 56 patients treated
with unilateral hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) had CoS and CrS
ion studies performed more than one year after surgery. The mean
age of the patients at the time of surgery was 51.7 years (29 to
70), with 38 women (68%) and 18 men (32%).Aims

The aims of this study were to determine the cumulative ten-year
survivorship of hips treated for acetabular fractures using surgical
hip dislocation and to identify factors predictive of an unfavourable
outcome. We followed up 60 consecutive patients (61 hips; mean age 36.3
