Aims . Few studies have evaluated the relationship between patients’
pre-operative expectations and the outcome of orthopaedic procedures.
Our aim was to determine the effect of expectations on the outcome
after primary anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA). We hypothesised
that patients with greater expectations would have better outcomes. . Patients and Methods. Patients undergoing primary anatomical TSA completed the Hospital
for Special Surgery’s Shoulder Expectations Survey pre-operatively.

Aims. Ultrasound (US)-guided injections are widely used in patients with conditions of the shoulder in order to improve their accuracy. However, the clinical efficacy of US-guided injections compared with blind injections remains controversial. The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy and efficacy of US-guided compared with blind corticosteroid injections into the glenohumeral joint in patients with primary frozen shoulder (FS). Methods. Intra-articular corticosteroid injections were administered to 90 patients primary FS, who were randomly assigned to either an US-guided (n = 45) or a blind technique (n = 45), by a shoulder specialist. Immediately after injection, fluoroscopic images were obtained to assess the accuracy of the injection. The outcome was assessed using a
Aim. There is insufficient evidence to support bony reconstruction of the pubis after a type III internal hemipelvectomy (resection of all or part of the pubis). In this study, we compared surgical complications, postoperative pain, and functional outcome in a series of patients who had undergone a type III internal hemipelvectomy with or without bony reconstruction. Methods. In a retrospective cohort study, 32 patients who had undergone a type III hemipelvectomy with or without allograft reconstruction (n = 15 and n = 17, respectively) were reviewed. The mean follow-up was 6.7 years (SD 3.8) for patients in the reconstruction group and 6.1 years (SD 4.0) for patients in the non-reconstruction group. Functional outcome was evaluated using the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) scoring system and the level of postoperative
Aims. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the Mobi-C implant
in cervical disc degeneration, a randomised study was conducted,
comparing the Mobi-C prosthesis arthroplasty with anterior cervical
disc fusion (ACDF) in patients with single level cervical spondylosis. Patients and Methods. From January 2008 to July 2009, 99 patients were enrolled and
randomly divided into two groups, those having a Mobi-C implant
(n = 51; 30 men, 21 women) and those undergoing ACDF (n = 48; 28
men, 20 women). The patients were followed up for five years, with
the primary outcomes being the Japanese Orthopaedic Association

Failed internal fixation of a fracture of the
proximal humerus produces many challenges with limited surgical options.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes after
the use of a reverse shoulder arthroplasty under these circumstances.
Between 2007 and 2012, 19 patients (15 women and four men, mean
age 66 years; 52 to 82) with failed internal fixation after a proximal
humeral fracture, underwent implant removal and reverse shoulder arthroplasty
(RSA). The mean follow-up was 36 months (25 to 60). The mean American
Shoulder and Elbow Score improved from 27.8 to 50.1 (p = 0.019).
The mean Simple Shoulder Test score improved from 0.7 to 3.2 (p
= 0.020), and the mean

Aims. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there were long-term differences in outcomes of reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) undertaken for acute proximal humeral fracture versus rotator cuff deficiency with a minimum follow-up of five years. Methods. This was a prospective cohort study comparing 67 patients with acute complex proximal humeral fracture and 64 patients with irreparable rotator cuff deficiency who underwent primary RSA. In the fracture group, there were 52 (77.6%) females and 15 (22.4%) males, with a mean age of 73.5 years (51 to 85), while in the arthropathy group, there were 43 (67.1%) females and 21 (32.9%) males, with a mean age of 70.6 years (50 to 84). Patients were assessed by the Constant score, University of California Los Angeles shoulder score (UCLA), short version of the Disability of the Arm Shoulder and Hand score (QuickDASH), and
Aims. Multimodal infiltration of local anaesthetic provides effective
control of pain in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA).
There is little information about the added benefits of posterior
capsular infiltration (PCI) using different combinations of local
anaesthetic agents. Our aim was to investigate the effectiveness
of the control of pain using multimodal infiltration with and without
infiltration of the posterior capsule of the knee. Patients and Methods. In a double-blind, randomised controlled trial of patients scheduled
for unilateral primary TKA, 86 were assigned to be treated with
multimodal infiltration with (Group I) or without (Group II) PCI.
Routine associated analgesia included the use of bupivacaine, morphine,
ketorolac and epinephrine. All patients had spinal anaesthesia and patient-controlled
analgesia (PCA) post-operatively. A

Aims. We wished to compare the clinical outcome, as assessed by questionnaires
and the rate of complications, in total knee arthroplasty (TKA)
undertaken with patient-matched positioning guides (PMPGs) or conventional
instruments. Patients and Methods. A total of 180 patients (74 men, 106 women; mean age 67 years)
were included in a multicentre, adequately powered, double-blind,
randomised controlled trial. The mean follow-up was 44 months (24
to 57). Results. There were no significant or clinically relevant differences
between the two groups for all outcome measures (Knee Society Score,
p = 0.807; Oxford Knee Score, p = 0.304; Western Ontario and McMaster

The aim of this study was to compare the clinical and radiological outcomes of reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) using small and standard baseplates in Asian patients, and to investigate the impact of a mismatch in the sizes of the glenoid and the baseplate on the outcomes. This was retrospective analysis of 50 and 33 RSAs using a standard (33.8 mm, ST group) and a small (29.5 mm, SM group) baseplate of the Equinoxe reverse shoulder system, which were undertaken between January 2017 and March 2021. Radiological evaluations included the size of the glenoid, the Aims
