Aims. Two-stage exchange arthroplasty is the most common definitive treatment for prosthetic joint infection (PJI) in the USA. Complications that occur during treatment are often not considered. The purpose of this study was to analyze complications in patients undergoing two-stage exchange for infected total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and determine when they occur. Methods. We analyzed all patients that underwent two-stage exchange arthroplasty for treatment of PJI of the

Aims. The outcome of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is not always satisfactory.
The purpose of this study was to identify satisfaction and biomechanical
features characterising the gait of patients who had undergone TKA
with either an anatomical single radius design or a medial pivot
design. We hypothesised that the latter would provide superior function. Patients and Methods. This is a study of a subset of patients recruited into a prospective
randomised study of a single radius design versus a
medial pivot design, with a minimum follow-up of one year. Outcome
measurements included clinical scores (Knee Society Score (KSS)

This prospective study used magnetic resonance imaging to record sagittal plane tibiofemoral kinematics before and after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using autologous hamstring graft. Twenty patients with anterior cruciate ligament injuries, performed a closed-chain leg-press while relaxed and against a 150 N load. The tibiofemoral contact patterns between 0° to 90° of
Between July 1986 and August 1996, we performed 32 total knee arthroplasties (TKA) on 32 patients with partially or completely ankylosed

The success of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is usually measured using functional outcome scores and revision-free survivorship. However, reporting the lifetime risk of revision may be more meaningful to patients when gauging risks, especially in younger patients. We aimed to assess the lifetime risk of revision for patients in different age categories at the time of undergoing primary TKA. The New Zealand Joint Registry database was used to obtain revision rates, mortality, and the indications for revision for all primary TKAs performed during an 18-year period between January 1999 and December 2016. Patients were stratified into age groups at the time of the initial TKA, and the lifetime risk of revision was calculated according to age, sex, and the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) grade. The most common indications for revision were also analyzed for each age group.Aims

The Oxford mobile-bearing unicompartmental knee
replacement (UKR) is an effective and safe treatment for osteoarthritis
of the medial compartment. The results in the lateral compartment
have been disappointing due to a high early rate of dislocation
of the bearing. A series using a newly designed domed tibial component
is reported. The first 50 consecutive domed lateral Oxford UKRs in 50 patients
with a mean follow-up of three years (2.0 to 4.3) were included.
Clinical scores were obtained prospectively and Kaplan-Meier survival
analysis was performed for different endpoints. Radiological variables
related to the position and alignment of the components were measured. One patient died and none was lost to follow-up. The cumulative
incidence of dislocation was 6.2% (95% confidence interval (CI)
2.0 to 17.9) at three years. Survival using revision for any reason
and aseptic revision was 94% (95% CI 82 to 98) and 96% (95% CI 85
to 99) at three years, respectively. Outcome scores, visual analogue

The aim of this study is to assess the impact of a pilot enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) programme on length of stay (LOS) and post-discharge resource usage via service evaluation and cost analysis. Between May and December 2019, 100 patients requiring hip or knee arthroplasty were enrolled with the intention that each would have a preadmission discharge plan, a preoperative education class with nominated helper, a day of surgery admission and mobilization, a day one discharge, and access to a 24/7 dedicated helpline. Each was matched with a patient under the pre-existing pathway from the previous year.Aims

Objectives. Metabolic syndrome and low-grade systemic inflammation are associated with knee osteoarthritis (OA), but the relationships between these factors and OA in other synovial joints are unclear. The aim of this study was to determine if a high-fat/high-sucrose (HFS) diet results in OA-like joint damage in the shoulders,
We carried out three total knee replacements with proximal realignment in two patients with severe osteoarthritis of the
