Aims. Patients with multiple myeloma (MM) develop deposits in the spine
which may lead to vertebral compression fractures (VCFs). Our aim
was to establish which spinopelvic parameters are associated with
the greatest disability in patients with spinal myeloma and VCFs. Patients and Methods. We performed a retrospective cross-sectional review of 148 consecutive
patients (87 male, 61 female) with spinal myeloma and analysed correlations
between spinopelvic parameters and patient-reported outcome scores.

Aims. This study analysed the clinical and radiological outcome of
anatomical reduction of a moderate or severe stable slipped capital
femoral epiphysis (SCFE) treated by subcapital osteotomy (a modified
Dunn osteotomy) through the surgical approach described by Ganz. . Patients and Methods. We prospectively studied 31 patients (32 hips; 16 females and
five males; mean
Aims. The mainstay of surgical correction of hallux valgus is first
metatarsal osteotomy, either proximally or distally. We present
a technique of combining a distal chevron osteotomy with a proximal
opening wedge osteotomy, for the correction of moderate to severe
hallux valgus. Patients and Methods. We reviewed 45 patients (49 feet) who had undergone double osteotomy.
Outcome was assessed using the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle
Society (AOFAS) and the Short Form (SF) -36 Health Survey scores.
Radiological measurements were undertaken to assess the correction. The mean
The aim of this study was to define return to
theatre (RTT) rates for elective hip and knee replacement (HR and
KR), to describe the predictors and to show the variations in risk-adjusted
rates by surgical team and hospital using national English hospital
administrative data. . We examined information on 260 206 HRs and 315 249 KRs undertaken
between April 2007 and March 2012. The 90-day RTT rates were 2.1%
for HR and 1.8% for KR. Male gender, obesity, diabetes and several
other comorbidities were associated with higher odds for both index
procedures. For HR, hip resurfacing had half the odds of cement fixation
(OR = 0.58, 95% confidence intervals (CI) 0.47 to 0.71). For KR,
unicondylar KR had half the odds of total replacement (OR = 0.49,
95% CI 0.42 to 0.56), and younger
There is little evidence on the cost effectiveness
of different brands of hip prostheses. We compared lifetime cost effectiveness
of frequently used brands within types of prosthesis including cemented
(Exeter V40 Contemporary, Exeter V40 Duration and Exeter V40 Elite
Plus Ogee), cementless (Corail Pinnacle, Accolade Trident, and Taperloc Exceed)
and hybrid (Exeter V40 Trilogy, Exeter V40 Trident, and CPT Trilogy).
We used data from three linked English national databases to estimate
the lifetime risk of revision, quality-adjusted life years (QALYs)
and cost. . For women with osteoarthritis
Aims. Chronic conditions of the wrist may be difficult to manage because
pain and psychiatric conditions are correlated with abnormal function
of the hand. Additionally, intra-articular inflammatory cytokines
may cause pain. We aimed to validate the measurement of inflammatory cytokines
in these conditions and identify features associated with symptoms. Patients and Methods. The study included 38 patients (18 men, 20 women, mean
Aims. To determine whether there is any difference in infection rate
at 90 days between trauma operations performed in laminar flow and
plenum ventilation, and whether infection risk is altered following
the installation of laminar flow (LF). Patients and Methods. We assessed the impact of plenum ventilation (PV) and LF on the
rate of infection for patients undergoing orthopaedic trauma operations.
All NHS hospitals in England with a trauma theatre(s) were contacted
to identify the ventilation system which was used between April
2008 and March 2013 in the following categories: always LF, never
LF, installed LF during study period (subdivided: before, during
and after installation) and unknown. For each operation,

Aims. The purpose of this study was to review a large cohort of patients
and further assess the correlation between the histological response
to chemotherapy in patients with Ewing’s sarcoma with the overall
(OS) and event-free survival (EFS). Patients and Methods. All patients treated for Ewing’s sarcoma between 1980 and 2012
were reviewed. Of these, 293 patients without metastases at the
time of diagnosis and treated with chemotherapy and surgery were
included. Patients were grouped according to the percentage of necrosis
after chemotherapy: Group I: 0% to 50%, Group II: 51% to 99% and Group
III: 100%. Results. The mean
Aims. Hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) is an alternative to conventional
total hip arthroplasty for patients with osteonecrosis (ON) of the
femoral head. Our aim was to report the long-term outcome of HRA,
which is not currently known. Patients and Methods. Long-term survivorship, clinical scores and radiographic results
for 82 patients (99 hips) treated with HRA for ON over a period
of 18 years were reviewed retrospectively. The mean
Aims. We examined risk of developing acute renal failure and the associated
mortality among patients
We report the kinematic and early clinical results
of a patient- and observer-blinded randomised controlled trial in which
CT scans were used to compare potential impingement-free range of
movement (ROM) and acetabular component cover between patients treated
with either the navigated ‘femur-first’ total hip arthroplasty (THA) method
(n = 66; male/female 29/37, mean
Aims. This study describes the Osseointegration Group of Australia’s
Accelerated Protocol two-stage strategy (OGAAP-1) for the osseointegrated
reconstruction of amputated limbs. Patients and Methods. We report clinical outcomes in 50 unilateral trans-femoral amputees
with a mean
Aims. We wished to compare the clinical outcome, as assessed by questionnaires
and the rate of complications, in total knee arthroplasty (TKA)
undertaken with patient-matched positioning guides (PMPGs) or conventional
instruments. Patients and Methods. A total of 180 patients (74 men, 106 women; mean
Unstable pelvic injuries in young children with
an immature pelvis have different modes of failure from those in adolescents
and adults. We describe the pathoanatomy of unstable pelvic injuries
in these children, and the incidence of associated avulsion of the
iliac apophysis and fracture of the ipsilateral fifth lumbar transverse
process (L5-TP). We retrospectively reviewed the medical records
of 33 children with Tile types B and C pelvic injuries admitted
between 2007 and 2014; their mean

A new method of vascularised tibial grafting
has been developed for the treatment of avascular necrosis (AVN)
of the talus and secondary osteoarthritis (OA) of the ankle. We
used 40 cadavers to identify the vascular anatomy of the distal
tibia in order to establish how to elevate a vascularised tibial
graft safely. Between 2008 and 2012, eight patients (three male,
five female, mean
Aims. Heterotopic ossification (HO) occurs after arthroplasty, especially
total hip arthroplasty. In this study we describe the incidence,
evolution, morphology and clinical consequences of HO following
reverse shoulder arthroplasty. Patients and Methods. This is a single-centre retrospective study of 132 consecutive
patients who received a Delta III or Delta Xtend reverse total shoulder
arthroplasty between 2006 and 2013 for the treatment of cuff tear
arthropathy. There were 96 women and 36 men. Their mean
Ceramic bearings have several desirable properties, such as resistance to wear, hardness, and biocompatibility, that favour it as an articulating surface in hip arthroplasty. However, ceramic fracture remains a concern. We have reviewed the contemporary literature, addressing the factors that can influence the incidence of ceramic bearing surface fracture.
