Currently, periprosthetic fractures are excluded from the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) definition of atypical femoral fracture (AFFs). This study aims to report on a series of periprosthetic femoral fractures (PFFs) that otherwise meet the criteria for AFFs. Secondary aims were to identify predictors of periprosthetic atypical femoral fractures (PAFFs) and quantify the complications of treatment. This was a retrospective case control study of consecutive patients with periprosthetic femoral fractures between 2007 and 2017. Two observers identified 16 PAFF cases (mean age 73.9 years (44 to 88), 14 female patients) and 17 typical periprosthetic fractures in patients on bisphosphonate therapy as controls (mean age 80.7 years (60 to 86, 13 female patients). Univariate and multivariate analysis was performed to identify predictors of PAFF. Management and complications were recorded.Aims

There is an increasing demand for hip arthroplasty in China. We aimed to describe trends in in-hospital mortality after this procedure in China and to examine the potential risk factors. We included 210 450 patients undergoing primary hip arthroplasty registered in the Hospital Quality Monitoring System in China between 2013 and 2016. In-hospital mortality after hip arthroplasty and its relation to potential risk factors were assessed using multivariable Poisson regression.Aims

When using a staged approach to eradicate chronic infection after total hip replacement, systemic delivery of antibiotics after the first stage is often employed for an extended period of typically six weeks together with the use of an in situ antibiotic-eluting polymethylmethacrylate interval spacer. We report our multi-surgeon experience of 43 consecutive patients (44 hips) who received systemic vancomycin for two weeks in combination with a vancomycin- and gentamicin-eluting spacer system in the course of a two-stage revision procedure for deep infection with a median follow-up of 49 months (25 to 83). The antibiotic-eluting articulating spacers

1. One hundred patients with fractures of the upper end of the femur were investigated clinically and radiographically to ascertain the incidence and site of deep venous thrombosis during convalescence. 2. The technique of phlebography used has its own inherent dangers, but we believe that familiarity with the technique reduces the risk of complications. 3. The investigation revealed thrombi that were clinically unsuspected and indicates a need for further investigation of factors such as manipulation and retraction that may promote deep thrombosis. 4. The study has provided a control series for an investigation of the effect of prophylactic anticoagulants upon the incidence of deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism after

Computed tomography was performed on 40 patients with recent hip trauma. Radiographs of 25 showed a fracture of the femoral neck with slight displacement; 24 of these had intra-articular fluid and 20 had a lipohaemarthrosis on the CT scan. In 15 patients, radiographs at the time of admission were normal but suspicion of fracture remained. A fracture was later verified in five patients, four of whom had lipohaemarthrosis on admission. In the remaining 10 patients no fracture could be detected; only one patient had a hip joint effusion but no free fat. Thus all 24 patients with lipohaemarthrosis had an intracapsular
