Achieving deep flexion after total knee replacement remains a challenge. In this study we compared the soft-tissue tension and tibiofemoral force in a mobile-bearing posterior cruciate ligament-sacrificing total knee replacement, using equal flexion and extension gaps, and with the gaps increased by 2 mm each. The tests were conducted during passive movement in five cadaver knees, and measurements of strain were made simultaneously in the collateral
The purposes of this study were to define the range of laxity of the interosseous
We report the effects of local administration of osteogenic protein-1 on the biomechanical properties of the overstretched anterior cruciate ligament in an animal model. An injury in the anterior cruciate ligament was created in 45 rabbits. They were divided into three equal groups. In group 1, no treatment was applied, in group II, phosphate-buffered saline was applied around the injured

When performing the Scandinavian Total Ankle Replacement (STAR), the positioning of the talar component and the selection of mobile-bearing thickness are critical. A biomechanical experiment was undertaken to establish the effects of these variables on the range of movement (ROM) of the ankle. Six cadaver ankles containing a specially-modified STAR prosthesis were subjected to ROM determination, under weight-bearing conditions, while monitoring the strain in the peri-ankle

To study the effect of ligament injuries and surgical repair we investigated the three-dimensional kinematics of the ankle joint complex and the talocrural and the subtalar joints in seven fresh-frozen lower legs before and after sectioning and reconstruction of the
We evaluated two reconstruction techniques for a simulated posterolateral corner injury on ten pairs of cadaver knees. Specimens were mounted at 30° and 90° of knee flexion to record external rotation and varus movement. Instability was created by transversely sectioning the lateral collateral
We assessed the predictive value of the macroscopic and detailed microscopic appearance of the coracoacromial
We compared the biological characteristics of extrinsic fibroblasts infiltrating the patellar tendon with those of normal, intrinsic fibroblasts in the normal tendon in vitro. Infiltrative fibroblasts were isolated from the patellar tendons of rabbits six weeks after an in situ freeze-thaw treatment which killed the intrinsic fibroblasts. These intrinsic cells were also isolated from the patellar tendons of rabbits which had not been so treated. Proliferation and invasive migration into the patellar tendon was significantly slower for infiltrative fibroblasts than for normal tendon fibroblasts. Flow-cytometric analysis indicated that expression of α5β1 integrin at the cell surface was significantly lower in infiltrative fibroblasts than in normal tendon fibroblasts. The findings suggest that cellular proliferation and invasive migration of fibroblasts into the patellar tendon after necrosis are inferior to those of the normal fibroblasts. The inferior intrinsic properties of infiltrative fibroblasts may contribute to a slow remodelling process in the grafted tendon after
In a study combining tissue mechanics and fracture morphology for the first time, we examined the ruptured surfaces of anterior cruciate ligaments of rabbits and related their appearance to the initial loading conditions. Sixteen specimens were stretched to failure at rates of displacement of 10 and 500 mm/min. We used video images to study the changes which occurred during the fracture process and SEM to examine the appearance of the ruptured surfaces. The surfaces of
Using a new, non-invasive method, we measured the patellofemoral force (PFF) in cadaver knees mounted in a rig to simulate weight-bearing. The PFF was measured from 20° to 120° of flexion before and after implanting three designs of knee prosthesis. Medial unicompartmental arthroplasty with a meniscal-bearing prosthesis and with retention of both cruciate
Cryopreserved patellar tendon allografts are often recommended for reconstruction of anterior cruciate ligaments (ACLs) because living donor fibroblasts are thought to promote repair. Animal studies, however, indicate that
There have been few descriptions of the site of attachment onto the triquetrum, the so-called meniscal homologue, of the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC). We have investigated the sites of attachment onto the triquetrum of 87 TFCCs collected from embalmed cadavers. All TFCCs were smoothly attached to the triquetrum. In 79 (46 cases, 90%) they were attached to the triquetrum and fifth metacarpal bone, and in eight (5 cases, 10%) they were attached widely on the articular surface of the triquetrum. It is necessary to have accurate positional information about the normal triquetrum and TFCC in order to perform arthroscopy. The meniscal homologue attached to the triquetrum is smooth in almost all cases. In about 10% of joints the TFCC is attached to the lunotriquetral
