1. The results in 138 hands operated on for Dupuytren's contracture are analysed and compared with those in other series. 2. Contracture ofthe metacarpo-phalangeal joint can be expected to respond well to operation, whereas the outlook in the case of contracture of the proximal interphalangeal joint is generally poor. 3. The reasons for this difference are examined. 4. The advantages of early operation for contracture of the proximal interphalangeal joint are stressed.
1. Experience with the McLaurin swivel walker for children with bilateral phocomelia of the lower limbs is described. 2. Modifications to the prosthesis and the method of fitting in stages are recorded.
1. Sixty-one cases of compression of the ulnar nerve are reported, forty at the elbow and twenty-one at the wrist. Although contributory factors may include deformity, osteoarthritis, injury, ganglia and other tumours, the narrow anatomical confines of the nerve at these two levels are noteworthy and alone may produce nerve compression. 2. Careful clinical examination will usually determine the level of involvement if not the exact pathology. Surgical exploration is indicated both as a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure in most cases. 3. Following removal of the compressing agent rapid recovery occurred in most cases.
1. A description of the planning for the application of a powered prosthesis to a child with bilateral upper limb deficiency is given. 2. Details of twenty such children are recorded.
1. An attempt has been made to correlate the radiographic appearances and the morbid anatomy of the cystic changes that occur in the head of the femur in advanced osteoarthritis. 2. The suggestion is made that these lesions are foci of traumatic bone necrosis. Repair may be complicated by the subsequent entrance of synovial fluid through defects in the surface.
1. Seven cases of localised lumbar spine defects in children associated with low back pain are described. 2. The importance is emphasised of the recognition and differentiation of the condition from tuberculosis, which it may resemble both clinically and radiographically.
1. Two cases of deposition of calcium in the medial ligament of the knee are described. Pain was a prominent feature in both. 2. A review of the literature suggests this is an uncommon condition. 3. The condition closely resembles supraspinatus calcification, and the etiology is probably similar. 4. Both cases were treated by operation, with complete relief of symptoms.
