The February 2014 Knee Roundup360 looks at: whether sham surgery is as good as arthroscopic meniscectomy; distraction in knee osteoarthritis; whether trans-tibial tunnel placement increases the risk of graft failure in ACL surgery; whether joint replacements prevent cardiac events; the size of the pulmonary embolism problem; tranexamic acid and knee replacement haemostasis; matching the demand for knee replacement and follow-up; predicting the length of stay after knee replacement; and popliteal artery injury in TKR.
Hip replacement is a very successful operation and the outcome is usually excellent. There are recognised complications that seem increasingly to give rise to litigation. This paper briefly examines some common scenarios where litigation may be pursued against hip surgeons. With appropriate record keeping, consenting and surgical care, the claim can be successfully defended if not avoided. We hope this short summary will help to highlight some common pitfalls. There is extensive literature available for detailed study.
The October 2013 Trauma Roundup360 looks at: Radiological, electromagnetic or just leave it out altogether?: distal locking in intramedullary nailing; Internal fixation of radiation-induced pathological fractures of the femur has a high rate of failure; Obesity and trauma; Short and sweet?: antibiotics in open fractures; Extremity injuries more important than previously thought?; Cement nails tiptop for osteomyelitis; Oxygen measurements for compartment syndrome?
The April 2012 Children’s orthopaedics Roundup360 looks at osteonecrosis of the femoral head and surgery for dysplasia, femoral head blood flow during surgery, femoroacetabular impingement and sport in adolescence, the Drehmann sign, a predictive algorithm for septic arthritis, ACL reconstruction and arthrofibrosis in children, spinal cord monitoring for those less than four years old, arthroereisis for the flexible flat foot, fixing the displaced lateral humeral fracture, and mobile phones and inclinometer applications
