The management of periprosthetic distal femur fractures is an issue of increasing importance for orthopaedic surgeons. Because of the expanding indications for total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and an aging population with increasingly active lifestyles there has been a corresponding increase in the prevalence of these injuries. The management of these fractures is often complex because of issues with obtaining fixation around implants and dealing with osteopenic bone or compromised bone stock. In addition, these injuries frequently occur in frail, elderly patients, and the early restoration of function and ambulation is critical in these patients. There remains substantial controversy with respect to the optimal

Bone turnover and the accumulation of microdamage are impacted by the presence of skeletal metastases which can contribute to increased fracture risk. Treatments for metastatic disease may further impact bone quality. The present study aims to establish a preliminary understanding of microdamage accumulation and load to failure in osteolytic vertebrae following stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), zoledronic acid (ZA), or docetaxel (DTX)

Aim. Smoking is known to impair wound healing and to increase the risk of peri-operative adverse events and is associated with orthopaedic infection and fracture non-union. Understanding the magnitude of the causal effect on orthopaedic infection recurrence may improve pre-operative patient counselling. Methods. Four prospectively-collected datasets including 1173 participants treated in European centres between 2003 and 2021, followed up to 12 months after surgery for clinically diagnosed orthopaedic infections, were included in logistic regression modelling with Inverse Probability of
Aim. Dalbavancin is a lipoglycopeptide with a half-life of 14 days (range 6.1 to 18.4), significantly longer than other antimicrobials, which avoids the need for daily antibiotic dosing. This multi-centre observational study aims to describe the use of dalbavancin to facilitate discharge in treating bone and joint infections. Method. All adult patients treated with dalbavancin from January 2017 to September 2022 in four UK bone infection units were included. Data collected through a standardised data collection form included:. Clinical and microbiological characteristics. Hospital length of stay. Complications. Patient suitability for hypothetical
Giant cell tumors of bone (GCTs) are locally aggressive tumors with recurrence potential that represent up to 10% of primary tumors of the bone. GCTs pathogenesis is driven by neoplastic mononuclear stromal cells that overexpress receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B/ligand (RANKL).

Introduction. Non-union is an unfortunate outcome of the fracture healing process for some patients; with an estimated annual incidence of 17.4- 18.9 per 100,00. The management of these patients depicts a significant clinical challenge for surgeons and financial burden to health services. External ultrasound stimulation devices (Exogen. TM. ) have been highlighted as a novel non invasive therapy to achieve union in cases of delayed and non-union. The aim of the current study was to assess the rate of union in patients using Exogen. TM. therapy for delayed fracture union in a district general hospital. Materials & Methods. This is a single centre retrospective continuous cohort study. Patients were identified from a prospective database of all patients prescribed Exogen. TM. therapy between June 2013- September 2021 in a district general hospital. Patient data was collected retrospectively using electronic patient records. Fracture union was assessed both clinically and radiographically and recorded in patient records. Failure of

Aim. The number of operatively treated clavicle fractures has increased over the past decades. Consequently, this has led to an increase in secondary procedures required to treat complications such as fracture-related infection (FRI). The primary objective of this study was to assess the clinical and functional outcome of patients treated for FRI of the clavicle. The secondary objectives were to evaluate the healthcare costs and propose a standardized protocol for the surgical management of this complication. Method. All patients with a clavicle fracture who underwent open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) between 1 January 2015 and 1 March 2022 were retrospectively evaluated. This study included patients with an FRI who were diagnosed and treated according to the recommendations of a multidisciplinary team at the University Hospitals Leuven, Belgium. Results. We evaluated 626 patients with 630 clavicle fractures who underwent ORIF. In total, 28 patients were diagnosed with an FRI. Of these, eight (29%) underwent definitive implant removal, five (18%) underwent debridement, antimicrobial
