Purpose and Background. Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD) can affect 56–80% of physiotherapists. Patient handling is reported as a significant risk factor for developing WRMSD with the back most frequently injured. Physiotherapists perform therapeutic handling to manually assist and facilitate patients’ movement to aid rehabilitation, which can increase physiotherapists risk of experiencing high forces during patient handling. Methods and Results. A descriptive cross-sectional study was completed to explore and quantitatively measure the movement of ten physiotherapists during patient handling, over one working day, in a neurological setting. A wearable 3-dimensional motion analysis system, Xsens (Movella, Henderson, NV), was used to measure physiotherapist movement and postures in the ward setting during patient treatment sessions. Aims. Magnetically controlled growing rod (MCGR) systems use non-invasive
spinal lengthening for the surgical treatment of early-onset scoliosis
(EOS). The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the performance
of these devices in the prevention of progression of the deformity.
A secondary aim was to record the rate of complications. Patients and Methods. An observational study of 31 consecutive children with EOS, of
whom 15 were male, who were treated between December 2011 and October
2017 was undertaken. Their mean age was 7.7 years (2 to 14). The
mean follow-up was 47 months (24 to 69). Distractions were completed
using the tailgating technique. The primary outcome measure was
correction of the radiographic deformity. Secondary outcomes were
growth, functional outcomes and complication rates. Results. The mean Cobb angle was 54° (14° to 91°) preoperatively and 37°
(11° to 69°) at the latest follow-up (p < 0.001). The mean thoracic
kyphosis (TK) was 45° (10° to 89°) preoperatively and 42° (9° to
84°) at the latest follow-up. The mean T1–S1 height increased from

Aim:. The Magnetic Expansion Control Rod Device (Magec) allows controlled distraction of the immature spine for the treatment of early onset scoliosis. There disparity between the reported distraction on the external adjustment device (EAD) and true distraction achieved has not been commented on to date. This study aims to determine the disparity between ‘true’ (T) and ‘apparent’ (A) distraction. Our secondary aim was to assess truncal growth and development. Methods:. Thirteen patients underwent an average of 4.4 (3–6) three monthly distractions. The amount of true distraction was determined by measuring the expansion gap on radiographs using the width of the rod as a conversion factor to allow for magnification. The aim of this study was to reassess the rate of neurological, psoas-related, and abdominal complications associated with L4-L5 lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) undertaken using a standardized preoperative assessment and surgical technique. This was a multicentre retrospective study involving consecutively enrolled patients who underwent L4-L5 LLIF by seven surgeons at seven institutions in three countries over a five-year period. The demographic details of the patients and the details of the surgery, reoperations and complications, including femoral and non-femoral neuropraxia, thigh pain, weakness of hip flexion, and abdominal complications, were analyzed. Purpose and Background. Physical mechanisms underlying back pain impairment are poorly understood. Measuring movement features linked to back pain should help understand its causes and decide on best management. Previous kinematic studies have pointed to diverse features distinguishing back pain sufferers. To estimate the frequency of occurrence of the BP in young adults and its relation to the functional state of the spine. Methods. The screening conducted 91 medical students (58 women and 33 men) aged 21.3±2.4 years. The aim of this study was to assess the ability of morphological spinal parameters to predict the outcome of bracing in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and to establish a novel supine correction index (SCI) for guiding bracing treatment. Patients with AIS to be treated by bracing were prospectively recruited between December 2016 and 2018, and were followed until brace removal. In all, 207 patients with a mean age at recruitment of 12.8 years (SD 1.2) were enrolled. Cobb angles, supine flexibility, and the rate of in-brace correction were measured and used to predict curve progression at the end of follow-up. The SCI was defined as the ratio between correction rate and flexibility. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was carried out to assess the optimal thresholds for flexibility, correction rate, and SCI in predicting a higher risk of progression, defined by a change in Cobb angle of ≥ 5° or the need for surgery.Aims

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether, after correction of an adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS), leaving out the subfascial drain gives results that are no worse than using a drain in terms of total blood loss, drop in haemoglobin level, and opioid consumption. Adolescents (aged between 10 and 21 years) with an idiopathic scoliosis (major curve ≥ 45°) were eligible for inclusion in this randomized controlled noninferiority trial (n = 125). A total of 90 adolescents who had undergone segmental pedicle screw instrumentation were randomized into no-drain or drain groups at the time of wound closure using the sealed envelope technique (1:1). The primary outcome was a drop in the haemoglobin level during first three postoperative days. Secondary outcomes were 48-hour postoperative oxycodone consumption and surgical complications.Aims

Background and purpose of the study. Dropped Head Syndrome (DHS) is characterized by a chin on chest flexion neck deformity that is passively correctible. The condition is rare and literature on surgical and conservative management is focused on case studies and theoretical evidence. Purpose of the study. The purpose of this study was to investigate the value of physiotherapy in the treatment of DHS by case series analysis. Methods. The effectiveness of physiotherapy was examined in six patients, some of whom were still under treatment and evaluation. Photographs were taken of some of the patients in order to gain further insight into the condition. Conservative management was provided in the form of physiotherapy and the use of a collar.
