Background. Plantar fasciitis is a frequently chronic and disabling cause of foot pain in adults. This prospective study aims to evaluate the analgesic effect of
It is difficult to determine the safe timing
of weight-bearing or reconstructive surgery in patients with Charcot arthropathy
of the foot and ankle. In this study the Doppler spectrum of the
first dorsal metatarsal artery was used to monitor the activity
of the disease activity and served as a guideline for management.
A total of 15 patients (seven men and eight women) with acute diabetic
Charcot arthropathy of the foot and ankle were immobilised in a non-weight-bearing

spectra of the first dorsal metatarsal arteries were obtained using

This prospective cohort study aims to determine if the size of
the tendon gap following acute rupture of the Achilles tendon shows
an association with the functional outcome following non-operative
treatment. All patients presenting within two weeks of an acute unilateral
rupture of the Achilles tendon between July 2012 and July 2015 were
considered for the study. In total, 38 patients (nine female, 29
male, mean age 52 years; 29 to 78) completed the study. Dynamic
ultrasound examination was performed to confirm the diagnosis and
measure the gap between ruptured tendon ends. Outcome was assessed
using dynamometric testing of plantarflexion and the Achilles tendon

Background. Infiltration is considered the first treatment option for symptomatic Morton's neuroma and can be performed with various medications. The aim of this study was to compare the effects of hyaluronic acid infiltration versus corticosteroid injection in the treatment of Morton's neuroma. Methods. A randomised clinical trial was conducted with 46 patients (50 feet) diagnosed with Morton's neuroma. After randomisation, the control group (CG) received three injections (one per week) of triamcinolone (Triancil®) guided by
Background. Masses are not uncommon in the foot and ankle. Most of these masses are benign, often leading clinicians to underestimate their potential for malignancy. Methods. We conducted a retrospective review of our clinical records, on patients with histologically confirmed musculoskeletal tumours of the foot and ankle, treated in a single nstitution between 2010 and 2019. The maximum diameter of each lesion was determined through MRI or
Aims. Functional rehabilitation has become an increasingly popular treatment for Achilles tendon rupture (ATR), providing comparably low re-rupture rates to surgery, while avoiding risks of surgical complications. Limited evidence exists on whether gap size should affect patient selection for this treatment option. The aim of this study was to assess if size of gap between ruptured tendon ends affects patient-reported outcome following ATR treated with functional rehabilitation. Methods. Analysis of prospectively collected data on all 131 patients diagnosed with ATR at Royal Berkshire Hospital, UK, from August 2016 to January 2019 and managed non-operatively was performed. Diagnosis was confirmed on all patients by dynamic
Aims. The pathogenesis of intraneural ganglion cysts is controversial.
Recent reports in the literature described medial plantar intraneural
ganglion cysts (mIGC) with articular branches to subtalar joints.
The aim of the current study was to provide further support for
the principles underlying the articular theory, and to explain the
successes and failures of treatment of mICGs. Patients and Methods. Between 2006 and 2017, five patients with five mICGs were retrospectively
reviewed. There were five men with a mean age of 50.2 years (33
to 68) and a mean follow-up of 3.8 years (0.8 to 6). Case history,
physical examination, imaging, and intraoperative findings were
reviewed. The outcomes of interest were
We conducted a randomised controlled trial to
determine whether active intense pulsed light (IPL) is an effective treatment
for patients with chronic mid-body Achilles tendinopathy. A total
of 47 patients were randomly assigned to three weekly therapeutic
or placebo IPL treatments. The primary outcome measure was the Victorian
Institute of Sport Assessment – Achilles (VISA-A) score. Secondary
outcomes were a visual analogue scale for pain (VAS) and the Lower
Extremity Functional Scale (LEFS). Outcomes were recorded at baseline,
six weeks and 12 weeks following treatment.
Aim. To determine the influence of tendo achilles (TA) rupture gap distance and location on clinical outcome managed with accelerated functional rehabilitation. Methods. Twenty six patients with acute complete TA ruptures underwent

ECSWT has been on the medical horizon for last 30 years mainly in urology for urolithiasis and has found a parallel use in orthopaedics for various chronic soft tissue conditions like Tendoachilles tendinoses and plantar fasciitis etc. ECSWT acts a piezoelectric device releasing acoustic energy and causing micro-trauma activating cytokine mediated response stimulating local angiogenesis and tissue repair. Methodology. 56 patients were recruited for the trial after ethics approval was achieved. The diagnosis was confirmed with
The ideal management of acute syndesmotic injuries in elite athletes is controversial. Among several treatment methods used to stabilize the syndesmosis and facilitate healing of the ligaments, the use of suture tape (InternalBrace) has previously been described. The purpose of this study was to analyze the functional outcome, including American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) scores, knee-to-wall measurements, and the time to return to play in days, of unstable syndesmotic injuries treated with the use of the InternalBrace in elite athletes. Data on a consecutive group of elite athletes who underwent isolated reconstruction of the anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament using the InternalBrace were collected prospectively. Our patient group consisted of 19 elite male athletes with a mean age of 24.5 years (17 to 52). Isolated injuries were seen in 12 patients while associated injuries were found in seven patients (fibular fracture, medial malleolus fracture, anterior talofibular ligament rupture, and posterior malleolus fracture). All patients had a minimum follow-up period of 17 months (mean 27 months (17 to 35)).Aims

The aim of this study was to identify the incidence of post-operative symptomatic deep-vein thrombosis (DVT), as well as the risk factors for and location of DVT, in 665 patients (701 ankles) who underwent primary total ankle replacement. All patients received low-molecular-weight heparin prophylaxis. A total of 26 patients (3.9%, 26 ankles) had a symptomatic DVT, diagnosed by experienced radiologists using colour Doppler
A Morton's neuroma is a compressive neuropathy most commonly affecting the common digital nerve of the third inter-space. Symptoms are variable but usually the diagnosis can be made quite easily and the diagnosis is essentially a “clinical” one. When symptoms relate to the second inter-space the clinician needs to be alert to mechanical causes of metatarsalgia leading to secondary irritation of the nerve. Imaging with MRI scanning and/or
Introduction. Injections are used to treat a wide variety of pathologies. Our aim was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of foot and ankle injections in our clinic. Materials and methods. We performed a retrospective review of notes and a telephone questionnaire audit into the clinical outcome of all patients who underwent an injection of the foot or ankle in a year. All procedures were performed in an out-patient setting by a consultant musculoskeletal radiologist using either
Aims. This prospective cohort study aimed to determine if the size of the tendon gap following acute tendo Achillis rupture influences the functional outcome following non-operative treatment. Patients and methods. All patients presenting with acute unilateral tendo Achillis rupture were considered for the study. Dynamic
