For patients with Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip (DDH) who progress to needing total joint arthroplasty it is important to understand the morphology of the femur when planning for and undertaking the surgery, as the surgery is often technically more challenging in patients with DDH on both the femoral and acetabular parts of the procedure1. The largest number of male DDH patients with degenerative joint disease previously assessed in a morphological study was 122. In this computed tomography (CT) based morphological study we aimed to assess whether there were any differences in femoral morphology between male and female patients with developmental dysplasia undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA) in a cohort of 49 male patients, matched to 49 female patients. This was a retrospective study of the pre-operative CT scans of all male patients with DDH who underwent THA at two hospitals in Japan between 2006–2017. Propensity score matching was used to match these patients with female patients in our database who had undergone THA during the same period, resulting in 49 male and 49 female patients being matched on age and Crowe classification. In Aotearoa, injury-related costs, including workers compensation, may be funded by ACC. With a steady increase of arthroplasty procedures in Aotearoa, we aim to understand the magnitude and characteristics of such procedures to inform future healthcare strategies. Method. This is a longitudinal collaborative study from 1st January 2000 to 31st December 2020, using ACC and New Zealand Joint Registry databases. Passive smartphone-based apps are becoming more common for measuring patient progress after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Optimum activity levels during early TKA recovery haven't been well documented. This study investigated correlations between step-count and patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) and how demographics impact step-count preoperatively and during early post-operative recovery. Abstract. Introduction. The extent to which hip arthroscopy (HA) treatments influence sexual function is not well described and limited to small cohorts. This study aims to describe trends in self-reported reported sexual function before and after HA. Methods. Adult (≥18 years) patients who underwent HA between 1/01/2012 and 31/10/2020 were extracted from the UK Non-Arthroplasty Hip Registry. International Hip Outcome Tool 12 (iHOT-12) questionnaires were collected pre-operatively and at 6 and 12 months. The iHOT-12 then asks asking patients to quantify ‘how much trouble they experience with sexual activity because of their hip?’ with responses converted to a continuous scale (0–100) to measure function. Results. Of 7639 procedures (59% female, mean age 36.5 years (SD 11)), 91% (5616 of 6151 respondents) indicated pre-operatively that questions about sexual activity were relevant to them (male 93%, female 90%, p < 0.001). Multiligament knee injuries (MLKI) are rare and life-altering injuries that remain difficult to treat clinically due to a paucity of evidence guiding surgical management and timing. The purpose of this study was to compare injury specific functional outcomes following early versus delayed surgical reconstruction in MLKI patients to help inform timing decisions in clinical practice. A retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data from patients with MLKIs at a single academic level 1-trauma center was conducted. Patients were eligible for inclusion if they had an MLKI, underwent reconstructive surgery either prior to 6wks from injury or between 12weeks and 2 years from injury, and had at least 12months of post-surgical follow-up. Patients with a vascular injury, open injuries or associated fractures were excluded. Study participants were stratified into early (12 weeks - 2 years from injury). The primary outcome was patient reported, injury specific, quality of life in the form of the Multiligament Quality of Life questionnaire (MLQOL) and its four domains (Physical Impairment, Emotional Impairment, Activity Limitations and Societal Involvement). We secondarily analyzed differences in the need for manipulation under anesthesia, and reoperation rates, as well as radiographic Kellgren Lawrence (KL) arthritis grades, knee laxity grading and range of motion at the most recent follow-up. A total of 131 patients met our inclusion criteria, all having had surgery between 2006 and 2019. There were 75 patients in the early group and 56 in the delayed group. Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a well-known complication of traumatic elbow injuries. The reported rates of post-traumatic HO formation vary from less than 5% with simple elbow dislocations, to greater than 50% in complex fracture-dislocations. Previous studies have identified fracture-dislocations, delayed surgical intervention, and terrible triad injuries as risk factors for HO formation. There is, however, a paucity of literature regarding the accuracy of diagnosing post-traumatic elbow HO. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to determine the inter-rater reliability of HO diagnosis using standard radiographs of the elbow at 52 weeks post-injury, as well as to report on the rate of mature compared with immature HO. We hypothesized inter-rater reliability would be poor among raters for HO formation. Prospectively collected data from a large clinical trial was reviewed by three independent reviewers (one senior orthopedic resident, one senior radiology resident, and one expert upper extremity orthopedic surgeon). Each reviewer examined anonymized 52-week post-injury radiographs of the elbow and recorded: 1. the presence or absence of HO, 2. the location of HO, 3. the size of the HO (in cm, if present), and 4. the maturity of the HO formation. Maturity was defined by consensus prior to image review and defined as an area of well-defined cortical and medullary bone outside the cortical borders of the humerus, ulna, or radius. Immature lesions were defined as an area of punctate calcification with an ill-defined cloud-like density outside the cortical borders of the humerus, ulna or radius. Data were collected using a standardized online data collection form (CognizantMD, Toronto, ON, CA). Inter-rater reliability was calculated using Fleiss’ Kappa statistic and a multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify risk factors for HO formation in general, as well as mature HO at 52 weeks post injury. Statistical analysis was performed using RStudio (version1.4, RStudio, Boston, MA, USA). A total of 79 radiographs at the 52-week follow-up were reviewed (54% male, mean age 50, age SD 14, 52% operatively treated). Inter-rater reliability using Fleiss’ Kappa was k= 0.571 (p = 0.0004) indicating moderate inter-rater reliability among the three reviewers. The rate of immature HO at 52 weeks was 56%.
