This study is a prospective, non-randomized trial for the treatment of fractures of the medial malleolus using lean, bioabsorbable, rare-earth element (REE)-free, magnesium (Mg)-based biodegradable screws in the adult skeleton. A total of 20 patients with isolated, bimalleolar, or trimalleolar ankle fractures were recruited between July 2018 and October 2019. Fracture reduction was achieved through bioabsorbable Mg-based screws composed of pure Mg alloyed with zinc (Zn) and calcium (Ca) ( Mg-Zn0.45-Ca0.45, in wt.%; ZX00). Visual analogue scale (VAS) and the presence of complications (adverse events) during follow-up (12 weeks) were used to evaluate the clinical outcomes. The functional outcomes were analyzed through the range of motion (ROM) of the ankle joint and the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score. Fracture reduction and gas formation were assessed using several plane radiographs.Aims

The December 2014 Foot &
Ankle Roundup360 looks at: Charcot feet, biomarkers and diabetes; weight bearing following Achilles tendon rupture; endobuttons and mal-reduced diastasis; evidence for stem cell therapies in osteochondral lesions of the talus; syndesmosis fixation in SER ankle fractures; and self-reporting for foot and ankle outcomes.
The purpose of this study was to compare the results and complications of tibial lengthening over an intramedullary nail with treatment using the traditional Ilizarov method. In this matched case study, 16 adult patients underwent 19 tibial lengthening over nails (LON) procedures. For the matched case group, 17 patients who underwent 19 Ilizarov tibial lengthenings were retrospectively matched to the LON group. Objectives

The April 2014 Foot &
Ankle Roundup360 looks at: Hawkins fractures revisited; arthrodesis compared with ankle replacement in osteoarthritis; mobile bearing ankle replacement successful in the longer-term; osteolysis is an increasing worry in ankle replacement; ankle synostosis post-fracture is not important; radiofrequency ablation for plantar fasciitis; and the right approach for tibiotalocalcaneal fusion.
Overlap between the distal tibia and fibula has always been quoted
to be positive. If the value is not positive then an injury to the
syndesmosis is thought to exist. Our null hypothesis is that it
is a normal variant in the adult population. We looked at axial CT scans of the ankle in 325 patients for
the presence of overlap between the distal tibia and fibula. Where
we thought this was possible we reconstructed the images to represent
a plain film radiograph which we were able to rotate and view in
multiple planes to confirm the assessment. Objectives
