A total of 63 women who had an operation for a fracture of the hip was randomly allocated to one year of treatment either with anabolic steroids, vitamin D and calcium (anabolic group) or with calcium only (control group). The thigh muscle volume was measured by quantitative CT. The bone mineral density of the hip,
We report retrospective and prospective studies to identify the causes of fracture of the femoral neck associated with femoral shaft nailing on the same side. Of a total of 14 neck fractures in a series of 152 shaft nailings, eight were not visible on the initial pelvic radiographs. We used CT scans before and after operation, and fluoroscopy during the procedure in our prospective series, and reviewed abdominal CT scans retrospectively with the window set to bone level. Six of the eight undisplaced fractures were shown to have been present before operation, but two were iatrogenic. We recommend the preoperative use of CT scans of the femoral neck in high-risk patients such as those with associated fractures of the acetabulum, the distal

sustaining major orthopaedic trauma with that of a younger population
with similar injuries. The Trauma Audit Research Network database was reviewed to identify
eligible patients admitted between April 2012 and June 2015. Distribution
and severity of injury, interventions, comorbidity, critical care
episodes and mortality were recorded. The population was divided
into young (64 years or younger) and older (65 years and older) patients.Aims

One concern about the fixation of HA-coated implants is the possible disintegration of the surface, with the migration of HA granules into the joint space, producing third-body wear. We report a study of six revisions of HA-coated polyethylene RM cups at 9 to 14 years after successful primary arthroplasty. In all six hips, we found HA granules embedded in the articulating surface of the polyethylene, with abrasive wear of the cup and the metal femoral head. The cup had loosened in four hips and three showed severe osteolysis of the proximal
We prepared a composite of D,L-lactic acid oligomer and dideoxykanamycin B for use as a biodegradable antibiotic delivery system with sustained effect. The composite was implanted in the distal portion of the rabbit
We present a new method of trochanter stabilisation designed for use in difficult revision hip arthroplasties. A fixator is secured to the metaphysis of the
Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) is increasingly used to measure changes in bone mineral density (BMD) around femoral prostheses after total hip arthroplasty. We have studied the factors which affect the accuracy of these measurements. The coefficient of variation was <
2% using a hydroxyapatite phantom, 2.7% in an anthropomorphic phantom specimen, and <
1% in repeated measurements on implanted cadaver femora. The precision did not vary with different implant materials or designs. In patients we found a mean precision error of 2.7% to 3.4%. The most significant factor affecting reproducibility was rotation of the
Hereditary multiple exostoses is an autosomal dominant disorder characterised by multiple osteochondromata, most commonly affecting the forearm, knee and ankle. Osteochondromata of the proximal
We performed intra-articular reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) with the semitendinosus tendon placed in 2 mm diameter tunnels in 21 skeletally immature rabbits. The operation caused 11% damage to the physis of the
We examined ten femoral veins with duplex ultrasound during total hip replacement to demonstrate the operative manoeuvres which cause venous obstruction and to assess prophylactic measures which may overcome it. Exposure of the acetabulum by distraction of the
Hyperphosphatasia, or hereditary bone dysplasia with hyperphosphatasaemia, is a rare genetic disorder which is characterised by failure to transform woven into lamellar bone. Clinical, radiological and histological features establish the diagnosis, fractures, deformities, diffuse sclerosis on radiographs and high serum alkaline phosphatase being characteristic. We report the case of a 27-year-old man with follow-up at the same hospital for 20 years. Attempts at treatment with calcitonin and disocium etidronate (EHDP) failed, but stapling of the growth plates at the knee was successfully performed. Transverse "brittle" fractures of the humerus, lower leg and ribs healed normally, but internal fixation and late bone grafting were required for a subtrochanteric stress fracture of the

1. A child is described in whom an acute osteitis was produced by some organism which could neither be identified nor cultured in vitro, and which provoked a violent general reaction but which also showed a distinct affinity for the central nervous system. 2. This organism survived in a cavity in the

We compared the mortality and outcome of 182 patients with proximal fractures of the
We evaluated the initial stability of cemented and uncemented femoral components within the femoral canals of cadaver
Above-knee amputation has been the traditional treatment for osteosarcoma of the proximal tibia. Recent advances in chemotherapy have encouraged the development of limb-salvage techniques. Van Nes rotationplasty for malignant lesions of the distal
We reviewed 14 patients (16 hips) treated by open reduction and upper femoral derotation osteotomy for congenital dislocation of the hip. Nine patients with 11 treated hips had growth deformities of the proximal
Some arthritic knees with varus deformity show excessive valgus angulation of the femoral joint surface with proximal tibia vara. This causes a downward and medial inclination of the articular surfaces in the coronal plane. The patients we studied had a medial shift of the standing load-bearing axis, and arthritic changes mainly in the medial compartment. Some also had lateral tibial subluxation with twisting of the distal
To determine the natural history of dislocation of the hip in cerebral palsy, and to evolve methods to predict dislocation, the notes and radiographs of 462 patients with cerebral palsy were reviewed. Dislocation occurred in 10% of patients by progressive migration and subluxation of the proximal
