To compare the effect of femoral bone tunnel configuration on tendon-bone healing in an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction animal model. Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using the plantaris tendon as graft material was performed on both knees of 24 rabbits (48 knees) to mimic ACL reconstruction by two different suspensory fixation devices for graft fixation. For the adjustable fixation device model (Socket group; group S), a 5 mm deep socket was created in the lateral femoral condyle (LFC) of the right knee. For the fixed-loop model (Tunnel group; group T), a femoral tunnel penetrating the LFC was created in the left knee. Asphericity of the femoral head-neck junction is common in cam-type
femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) and usually quantified using
the alpha angle on radiographs or MRI. The aim of this study was
to determine the natural alpha angle in a large cohort of patients
by continuous circumferential analysis with CT. CT scans of 1312 femurs of 656 patients were analyzed in this
cross-sectional study. There were 362 men and 294 women. Their mean
age was 61.2 years (18 to 93). All scans had been performed for
reasons other than hip disease. Digital circumferential analysis
allowed continuous determination of the alpha angle around the entire
head-neck junction. All statistical tests were conducted two-sided;

Recently, high failure rates of metal-on-metal (MOM) hip implants have raised concerns of cobalt toxicity. Adverse reactions occur to cobalt nanoparticles (CoNPs) and cobalt ions (Co2+) during wear of MOM hip implants, but the toxic mechanism is not clear. To evaluate the protective effect of zinc ions (Zn2+), Balb/3T3 mouse fibroblast cells were pretreated with 50 μM Zn2+ for four hours. The cells were then exposed to different concentrations of CoNPs and Co2+ for four hours, 24 hours and 48 hours. The aim of this study was to evaluate improvements in the quality
and safety of paediatric spinal surgery following the implementation
of a specialist Paediatric Spinal Surgical Team (PSST) in the operating
theatre. A retrospective consecutive case study of paediatric spinal operations
before (between January 2008 and December 2009), and after (between
January 2012 and December 2013) the implementation of PSST, was
performed. A comparative analysis of outcome variables including
surgical site infection (SSI), operating time (ORT), blood loss (BL),
length of stay (LOS), unplanned staged procedures (USP) and transfusion
rates (allogenic and cell-saver) was performed between the two groups.
The rate of complications during the first two postoperative years

In order to address acetabular defects, porous metal revision acetabular components and augments have been developed, which require fixation to each other. The fixation technique that results in the smallest relative movement between the components, as well as its influence on the primary stability with the host bone, have not previously been determined. A total of 18 composite hemipelvises with a Paprosky IIB defect were implanted using a porous titanium 56 mm multihole acetabular component and 1 cm augment. Each acetabular component and augment was affixed to the bone using two screws, while the method of fixation between the acetabular component and augment varied for the three groups of six hemipelvises: group S, screw fixation only; group SC, screw plus cement fixation; group C, cement fixation only. This study aimed to assess the effect of age and osteoporosis on the proliferative and differentiating capacity of bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in female rats. We also discuss the role of these factors on expression and migration of cells along the C-X-C chemokine receptor type 4 (CXCR-4) / stromal derived factor 1 (SDF-1) axis. Mesenchymal stem cells were harvested from the femora of young, adult, and osteopenic Wistar rats. Cluster of differentiation (CD) marker and CXCR-4 expression was measured using flow cytometry. Cellular proliferation was measured using Alamar Blue, osteogenic differentiation was measured using alkaline phosphatase expression and alizarin red production, and adipogenic differentiation was measured using Oil red O. Fracture clinics are often characterised by the referral of large
numbers of unselected patients with minor injuries not requiring
investigation or intervention, long waiting times and recurrent
unnecessary reviews. Our experience had been of an unsustainable
system and we implemented a ‘Trauma Triage Clinic’ (TTC) in order
to rationalise and regulate access to our fracture service. The
British Orthopaedic Association’s guidelines have required a prospective evaluation
of this change of practice, and we report our experience and results. We review the management of all 12 069 patients referred to our
service in the calendar year 2014, with a minimum of one year follow-up

The number of arthroplasties being performed
increases each year. Patients undergoing an arthroplasty are at
risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) and appropriate prophylaxis
has been recommended. However, the optimal protocol and the best
agent to minimise VTE under these circumstances are not known. Although
many agents may be used, there is a difference in their efficacy
and the risk of bleeding. Thus, the selection of a particular agent relies
on the balance between the desire to minimise VTE and the attempt
to reduce the risk of bleeding, with its undesirable, and occasionally
fatal, consequences. Acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) is an agent for VTE prophylaxis
following arthroplasty. Many studies have shown its efficacy in
minimising VTE under these circumstances. It is inexpensive and
well-tolerated, and its use does not require routine blood tests.
It is also a ‘milder’ agent and unlikely to result in haematoma
formation, which may increase both the risk of infection and the
need for further surgery. Aspirin is also unlikely to result in persistent
wound drainage, which has been shown to be associated with the use
of agents such as low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) and other
more aggressive agents. The main objective of this review was to summarise the current
evidence relating to the efficacy of aspirin as a VTE prophylaxis
following arthroplasty, and to address some of the common questions
about its use. There is convincing evidence that, taking all factors into account,
aspirin is an effective, inexpensive, and safe form of VTE following
arthroplasty in patients without a major risk factor for VTE, such

The aim of this study was to report the long-term outcome and
implant survival of the lateral resurfacing elbow (LRE) arthroplasty
in the treatment of elbow arthritis. We reviewed a consecutive series of 27 patients (30 elbows) who
underwent LRE arthroplasty between December 2005 and January 2008.
There were 15 women and 12 men, with a mean age of 61 years (25
to 82). The diagnosis was primary hypotrophic osteoarthritis (OA)
in 12 patients (14 elbows), post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA)
in five (five elbows) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in ten patients
(11 elbows). The mean clinical outcome scores including the Mayo
Elbow Performance Score (MEPS), the American Shoulder and Elbow
Surgeons elbow score (ASES-e), the mean range of movement and the
radiological outcome were recorded at three, six and 12 months and

Five osteotomies were designed using Mimics software: sacroiliac, biplanar supra-acetabular, two parallel iliopubic and ischial.
