We report the long-term clinical and radiological outcomes of a consecutive series of 200 total ankle arthroplasties (TAAs, 184 patients) at a single centre using the Scandinavian Total Ankle Replacement (STAR) implants. Between November 1993 and February 2000, 200 consecutive STAR prostheses were implanted in 184 patients by a single surgeon. Demographic and clinical data were collected prospectively and the last available status was recorded for further survival analysis. All surviving patients underwent regular clinical and radiological review. Pain and function were assessed using the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) hindfoot scoring system. The principal endpoint of the study was failure of the implant requiring revision of one or all of the components. Operative release for entrapment of the suprascapular nerve was carried out in 35 patients. They were assessed at an average of 30 months (12 to 98) after operation using the functional shoulder score devised by Constant and Murley. The average age at the time of surgery was 40 years (17 to 67). Entrapment was due to injury in ten patients and no cause was found in three; 34 had diffuse posterolateral shoulder pain. The strength of abduction was reduced in all the patients. The average Constant score, unadjusted for age or gender, before operative release was 47% (28 to 53). In 25 of the patients both the supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles were atrophied and seven had isolated atrophy of the infraspinatus muscle. The average conduction time from Erb’s point to the supraspinatus muscle and to the infraspinatus muscle was 5.7 ms (2.8 to 12.8) and 7.4 ms (3.4 to 13.4), respectively. In two patients MRI revealed a ganglion in the infraspinatus fossa and, in another, a complete rupture of the rotator cuff. The average time from the onset of symptoms to operation was ten months (3 to 36). A posterior approach was advocated. The average Constant score, after operative release, unadjusted for age or gender was 77% (35 to 91). of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH). The Ludloff medial
approach is commonly used, but poor results have been reported,
with rates of the development of avascular necrosis (AVN) varying
between 8% and 54%. This retrospective cohort study evaluates the
long-term radiographic and clinical outcome of dislocated hips treated
using this approach. Children with a dislocated hip, younger than one year of age
at the time of surgery, who were treated using a medial approach
were eligible for the study. Radiographs were evaluated for the
degree of dislocation and the presence of an ossific nucleus preoperatively,
and for the degree of AVN and residual dysplasia at one and five
years and at a mean of 12.7 years (4.6 to 20.8) postoperatively.
Radiographic outcome was assessed using the Severin classification,
after five years of age. Further surgical procedures were recorded.
Functional outcome was assessed using the Pediatric Outcomes Data
Collection Instrument (PODCI) or the Hip Disability and Osteoarthritis
Outcome Score (HOOS), depending on the patient’s age.Aims

The aim of this retrospective multicentre study was to evaluate
mid-term results of the operative treatment of Monteggia-like lesions
and to determine the prognostic factors that influence the clinical
and radiological outcome. A total of 46 patients (27 women and 19 men), with a mean age
of 57.7 years (18 to 84) who had sustained a Monteggia-like lesion
were followed up clinically and radiologically after surgical treatment.
The Mayo Modified Wrist Score (MMWS), Mayo Elbow Performance Score
(MEPS), Broberg and Morrey Score, and Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder
and Hand (DASH) score were used for evaluation at a mean of 65 months
(27 to 111) postoperatively. All ulnar fractures were stabilized
using a proximally contoured or precontoured locking compression
plate. Mason type I fractures of the radial head were treated conservatively, type
II fractures were treated with reconstruction, and type III fractures
with arthroplasty. All Morrey type II and III fractures of the coronoid

The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the performance
and safety of magnetically controlled growth rods in the treatment
of early onset scoliosis. Secondary aims were to evaluate the clinical
outcome, the rate of further surgery, the rate of complications,
and the durability of correction. We undertook an observational prospective cohort study of children
with early onset scoliosis, who were recruited over a one-year period
and followed up for a minimum of two years. Magnetically controlled
rods were introduced in a standardized manner with distractions
performed three-monthly thereafter. Adverse events which were both related
and unrelated to the device were recorded. Ten children, for whom
relevant key data points (such as demographic information, growth
parameters, Cobb angles, and functional outcomes) were available,
were recruited and followed up over the period of the study. There
were five boys and five girls. Their mean age was 6.2 years (2.5

The primary aim of this study was to assess the rate of patient
satisfaction one year after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) according
to the focus of the question asked. The secondary aims were to identify
independent predictors of patient satisfaction according to the
focus of the question. A retrospective cohort of 2521 patients undergoing a primary
unilateral TKA were identified from an established regional arthroplasty
database. Patient demographics, comorbidities, Western Ontario and
McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and 12-Item Short-Form
Health Survey (SF-12) scores were collected preoperatively and one
year postoperatively. Patient satisfaction was assessed using four
questions, which focused on overall outcome, activity, work, and
pain. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify independent
preoperative predictors of increased stiffness when adjusting for

of anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF) for trauma. A total of 155 patients (130 men, 25 women. Mean age 42.7 years;
