Until recently the accepted treatment of choice for severe type-II fibular hemimelia has been Syme’s or Boyd’s amputation. The alternative of distraction lengthening using the Ilizarov technique is now available. We report three patients (four limbs) with type-II fibular hemimelia who were treated by the Ilizarov technique and followed up for two to six years. Severe progressive procurvatum and valgus deformity of the
We studied the effects of high-dose irradiation on the mechanical properties and morphology of cortical bone in rabbits for 52 weeks after a single dose of 50 Gy of electron-beam to the

The treatment of fractures of the femoral shaft by traction may delay union and produce stiffness of the knee. The technique of Perkins' method is described and the results reported in 50 cases. All patients had at least 120 degrees of flexion of the knee when traction was discontinued, and 47 patients were considered to have clinical and radiological union of the fracture by 12 weeks. The main complications of the method was loosening of the Denham pin or infection of the pin-track in the proximal
A simple modification of Gallie's subtalar fusion is described as a salvage procedure in treating patients with pain from old fractures of the calcaneous involving the subtalar joint. Graft bone for the fusion is taken from the outer half of the calcaneus, thus avoiding disturbance of the

A high rate of suicide has been reported in patients who sustain
fractures, but the association remains uncertain in the context
of other factors. The aim of this study was to examine the association
between fractures and the risk of suicide in this contextual setting. We performed a case-control study of patients aged 40 years or
older who died by suicide between 2000 and 2011. We included patients’
demographics, physical and mental health problems, and socioeconomic
factors. We performed conditional logistic regression to evaluate
the associations between fractures and the risk of suicide.Aims

The management of a significant bony defect following excision
of a diaphyseal atrophic femoral nonunion remains a challenge. We
present the outcomes using a combined technique of acute femoral
shortening, stabilized with a long retrograde intramedullary nail,
accompanied by bifocal osteotomy compression and distraction osteogenesis with
a temporary monolateral fixator. Eight men and two women underwent the ‘rail and nail’ technique
between 2008 and 2016. Proximal locking of the nail and removal
of the external fixator was undertaken once the length of the femur
had been restored and prior to full consolidation of the regenerate.Aims

The use of a noninvasive growing endoprosthesis in the management
of primary bone tumours in children is well established. However,
the efficacy of such a prosthesis in those requiring a revision
procedure has yet to be established. The aim of this series was
to present our results using extendable prostheses for the revision
of previous endoprostheses. All patients who had a noninvasive growing endoprosthesis inserted
at the time of a revision procedure were identified from our database.
A total of 21 patients (seven female patients, 14 male) with a mean
age of 20.4 years (10 to 41) at the time of revision were included.
The indications for revision were mechanical failure, trauma or infection
with a residual leg-length discrepancy. The mean follow-up was 70
months (17 to 128). The mean shortening prior to revision was 44 mm
(10 to 100). Lengthening was performed in all but one patient with
a mean lengthening of 51 mm (5 to 140).Aims

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a posterior
malleolar fragment (PMF), with <
25% ankle joint surface, on
pressure distribution and joint-stability. There is still little
scientific evidence available to advise on the size of PMF, which
is essential to provide treatment. To date, studies show inconsistent
results and recommendations for surgical treatment date from 1940. A total of 12 cadaveric ankles were assigned to two study groups.
A trimalleolar fracture was created, followed by open reduction
and internal fixation. PMF was fixed in Group I, but not in Group
II. Intra-articular pressure was measured and cyclic loading was
performed.Aims

The aim of this study was to report the clinical, functional
and radiological outcomes of children and adolescents with tibial
fractures treated using the Ilizarov method. Between 2013 and 2016 a total of 74 children with 75 tibial fractures
underwent treatment at our major trauma centre using an Ilizarov
frame. Demographic and clinical information from a prospective database
was supplemented by routine functional and psychological assessment
and a retrospective review of the notes and radiographs.Aims

We studied 37 patients with varus osteoarthritis of the knee to determine the influence of the bone mineral density (BMD) on the varus deformity. There were 15 men (21 knees) and 22 women (38 knees). The mean age of the men was 69 years and of the women 68 years. BMD was measured in the L1–L4 spinal region using dual X-ray absorptiometry. In the women a low level of BMD was associated with varus deformity originating at the proximal
This study compares the PFC total knee arthroplasty (TKA) system in a prospective randomized control trial (RCT) of the mobile-bearing rotating-platform (RP) TKA against the fixed-bearing (FB) TKA. This is the largest RCT with the longest follow-up where cruciate-retaining PFC total knee arthroplasties are compared in a non-bilateral TKA study. A total of 167 patients (190 knees with 23 bilateral cases), were recruited prospectively and randomly assigned, with 91 knees receiving the RP and 99 knees receiving FB. The mean age was 65.5 years (48 to 82), the mean body mass index (BMI) was 29.7 kg/m2 (20 to 52) and 73 patients were female. The Knee Society Score (KSS), Knee Society Functional Score (KSFS), Oxford Knee Score (OKS), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC), and 12-Item Short-Form Health Survey Physical and Mental Component Scores (SF-12 PCS, SF-12 MCS) were gathered and recorded preoperatively, at five-years’ follow-up, and at ten years’ follow-up. Additionally, Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Scores (KOOS) were collected at five- and ten-year follow-ups. The prevalence of radiolucent lines (RL) on radiographs and implant survival were recorded at five- and ten-year follow-ups.Aims
