Polyethylene acetabular cups retrieved at revision surgery were measured by a shadowgraph technique to determine linear wear, and the values were compared with those obtained from radiographs. There was a close correlation between them, although the
The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the intermediate-term
outcomes after revision anatomical ankle ligament reconstruction
augmented with suture tape for a failed modified Broström procedure. A total of 30 patients with persistent instability of the ankle
after a Broström procedure underwent revision augmented with suture
tape. Of these, 24 patients who were followed up for more than two
years were included in the study. There were 13 men and 11 women.
Their mean age was 31.8 years (23 to 44). The mean follow-up was 38.5
months (24 to 56) The clinical outcome was assessed using the Foot
and Ankle Outcome Score (FAOS) and the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure
(FAAM) score. The stability of the ankle was assessed using stress
radiographs.Aims

This multicentre, retrospective study aimed to improve our knowledge
of primary pyogenic spinal infections in children by analyzing a
large consecutive case series. The medical records of children with such an infection, treated
at four tertiary institutions between 2004 and 2014, were analyzed
retrospectively. Epidemiological, clinical, paraclinical, radiological,
and microbiological data were evaluated. There were 103 children,
of whom 79 (76.7%) were aged between six months and four years.Aims

We treated 22 patients with type-two odontoid fractures in halothoracic vests for six to eight weeks followed by a Philadelphia collar for four weeks. Eighteen patients were reviewed by questionnaire and
We reviewed 15 patients with an arthrodesis of the elbow using an AO compression-plate technique, after an average follow-up of 24 months. The most common indication was an open, infected high-energy injury with associated bone loss. Arthrodesis was successful in all but one patient in whom severe deep infection necessitated amputation. Eight patients were treated with the metal partly exposed in an infected wound. After removal of the metal, all wounds healed secondarily and none had clinical or

In fully-grown mongrel dogs, diaphyseal ulnar defects 25 mm long were stabilised by screws and plates, and were temporarily filled with silicone rubber blocks. After eight weeks the block was replaced either by fresh autogeneic cancellous bone, allogeneic deep-frozen cancellous bone, allogeneic decalcified bone matrix, or bone matrix gelatin. After 24 weeks the implants were evaluated by
Thirty-two dysplastic hips with secondary osteoarthritis, in 28 patients aged 18 to 42 years, were treated by combined intertrochanteric and Chiari osteotomy. They were followed up for 2.5 to 10 years. Pain was the main presenting symptom in all the patients. The indication for surgery was based on the severity of disease with respect to congruency, secondary degenerative change and degree of dysplasia. The average pre-operative Harris hip score was 47.7 and the majority had severe dysplasia with degenerative changes. On final review the average score was 88. The
The purpose of this study was to determine the biological effects of the elastic modulus of the femoral stem in canine hip arthroplasty. Cementless total hip arthroplasty was performed in 12 dogs, six had a low elastic modulus polyacetal resin stem and six had a high modulus stainless steel stem. The components were otherwise similar. At six and 12 months after operation,
We studied the rate of revision in 84 consecutive total hip replacements performed for failed osteosynthesis of femoral neck fractures and compared it with that for primary arthroplasty for osteoarthritis. The age and sex adjusted risk of prosthetic failure was 2.5 times higher after failure of fixation, but all the excess risk was in patients over 70 years of age. There were
Using dried bones which could be tilted and rotated, we assessed the accuracy of published
The effects of using a tourniquet during total knee arthroplasty were studied in 80 patients randomly allocated to two groups, either with or without a tourniquet. The groups were similar in mean age, gender, preoperative knee score and
Hereditary multiple exostoses is an autosomal dominant disorder characterised by multiple osteochondromata, most commonly affecting the forearm, knee and ankle. Osteochondromata of the proximal femur have been reported to occur in 30% to 90% of affected patients with coxa valga in 25%. Acetabular dysplasia is rare but has been described. This is the first report of a patient requiring surgical intervention. A girl was seen at the age of nine with hereditary multiple exostoses and when 12 developed bilateral pain in the groin.
We have reviewed 11 patients with idiopathic transient osteoporosis of the hip; the six who were women all developed the condition during pregnancy. Both simultaneous and sequential bilateral involvement were seen, but biochemical studies were consistently normal and one synovial biopsy showed only non-specific inflammation. Radioisotope bone scans and CT scans were useful to aid diagnosis. Treatment by limiting weight-bearing relieved symptoms, and spontaneous resolution was paralleled by
We have studied core biopsy specimens from 16 femoral heads affected by idiopathic avascular necrosis at the silent stage, when there were no clinical or
Acute colonic pseudo-obstruction is a poorly recognised and potentially fatal complication of hip surgery. Between 1991 and 1994 six patients were observed who required laparotomy after failure of medical management. In three the indication was signs of peritonism, while in the other three exploration was required to exclude segmental ischaemia and to decompress the bowel. In all, there was no evidence of mechanical obstruction. Patients having total hip replacement are at risk of developing pseudo-obstruction due to their age, comorbidity, high doses of analgesics and the nature of the operation. If postoperative ileus persists for more than 48 hours acute colonic pseudo-obstruction should be suspected and confirmed by plain
We describe the clinical and radiological outcome of 100 consecutive total hip replacements in 86 patients using the JRI Furlong hydroxyapatite-coated femoral component. The follow-up was 100% at a mean of ten years (9.0 to 12.0). All 54 living patients (62 hips) were examined annually. Their mean Merle d’Aubigné score was 5.8/5.6/4.6. A total of 32 patients had died. Their notes at the last annual assessment recorded a similar outcome to that of the living patients.
We have carried out a prospective, longitudinal 30-year review of 95 adolescents who underwent total meniscectomy in one knee, and have compared the results with those observed 13 years earlier. All the medical records were scrutinised. Of the 63 patients reviewed clinically, 47 reported decreased sporting activity, although subjective satisfaction rose by 3% to 71%. The scores on the WOMAC osteoarthritis index differed significantly between patients grouped by subjective global assessment. Satisfactory function scores increased from 48% to 60%. In the 53 patients consenting to bilateral
