Plate and screw fixation has been the standard treatment for painful conditions of the wrist in non-rheumatoid patients in recent decades. We investigated the complications, re-operations, and final outcome in a consecutive series of patients who underwent wrist arthrodesis for non-inflammatory arthritis. A total of 76 patients, including 53 men and 23 women, with a mean age of 50 years (21 to 79) underwent wrist arthrodesis. Complications and re-operations were recorded. At a mean follow-up of 11 years (2 to 18), 63 patients completed questionnaires, and 57 attended for clinical and radiological assessment.Aims

The purpose of this multicentre observational study was to investigate the association between intraoperative component positioning and soft-tissue balancing on short-term clinical outcomes in patients undergoing robotic-arm assisted unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA). Between 2013 and 2016, 363 patients (395 knees) underwent robotic-arm assisted UKAs at two centres. Pre- and postoperatively, patients were administered Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Score (KOOS) and Forgotten Joint Score-12 (FJS-12). Results were stratified as “good” and “bad” if KOOS/FJS-12 were more than or equal to 80. Intraoperative, post-implantation robotic data relative to CT-based components placement were collected and classified. Postoperative complications were recorded.Aims

The aim of this study was to identify factors that determine outcomes of treatment for patients with chondroblastic osteosarcomas (COS) of the limbs and pelvis. The authors carried out a retrospective review of prospectively collected data from 256 patients diagnosed between 1979 and 2015. Of the 256 patients diagnosed with COS of the pelvis and the limbs, 147 patients (57%) were male and 109 patients (43%) were female. The mean age at presentation was 20 years (0 to 90).Aims

Acromial fractures following reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) have a wide range of incidences in reported case series. This study evaluates their incidence following RSA by systematically reviewing the current literature. A systematic review using the search terms “reverse shoulder”, “reverse total shoulder”, or “inverted shoulder” was performed using PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane databases between 1 January 2010 and 31 March 2018. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were used. Studies were included if they reported on RSA outcomes and the incidence rate of acromial and/or scapular spine fractures. The rate of these fractures was evaluated for primary RSA, revision RSA, RSA indications, and RSA implant design.Aims

Studying the indications for revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) may enable surgeons to change their practice during the initial procedure, thereby reducing the need for revision surgery. The aim of this study was to identify and describe the potentially avoidable indications for revision THA within five years of the initial procedure. A retrospective review of 117 patients (73 women, 44 men; mean age 61.5 years (27 to 88)) who met the inclusion criteria was conducted. Three adult reconstruction surgeons independently reviewed the radiographs and medical records, and they classified the revision THAs into two categories: potentially avoidable and unavoidable. Baseline demographics, perioperative details, and quality outcomes up to the last follow-up were recorded.Aims

Previously, we reported the improved transfection efficiency of a plasmid DNA-chitosan (pDNA-CS) complex using a phosphorylatable nuclear localization signal-linked nucleic kinase substrate short peptide (pNNS) conjugated to chitosan (pNNS-CS). This study investigated the effects of pNNS-CS-mediated miR-140 and interleukin-1 receptor antagonist protein (IL-1Ra) gene transfection both in rabbit chondrocytes and a cartilage defect model. The pBudCE4.1-miR-140, pBudCE4.1-IL-1Ra, and negative control pBudCE4.1 plasmids were constructed and combined with pNNS-CS to form pDNA/pNNS-CS complexes. These complexes were transfected into chondrocytes or injected into the knee joint cavity. Objectives
Methods
The aims of this study were to review the surgical technique for a combined femoral head reduction osteotomy (FHRO) and periacetabular osteotomy (PAO), and to report the short-term clinical and radiological results of a combined FHRO/PAO for the treatment of selected severe femoral head deformities. Between 2011 and 2016, six female patients were treated with a combined FHRO and PAO. The mean patient age was 13.6 years (12.6 to 15.7). Clinical data, including patient demographics and patient-reported outcome scores, were collected prospectively. Radiologicalally, hip morphology was assessed evaluating the Tönnis angle, the lateral centre to edge angle, the medial offset distance, the extrusion index, and the alpha angle.Aims

Osteolysis, secondary to local and systemic physiological effects, is a major challenge in total hip arthroplasty (THA). While osteolytic defects are commonly observed in long-term follow-up, how such lesions alter the distribution of stress is unclear. The aim of this study was to quantitatively describe the biomechanical implication of such lesions by performing subject-specific finite-element (FE) analysis on patients with osteolysis after THA. A total of 22 hemipelvis FE models were constructed in order to assess the transfer of load in 11 patients with osteolysis around the acetabular component of a THA during slow walking and a fall onto the side. There were nine men and two women. Their mean age was 69 years (55 to 81) at final follow-up. Changes in peak stress values and loads to fracture in the presence of the osteolytic defects were measured.Aims

Vertebral disease constitutes approximately 50% of all skeletal tuberculosis. We describe a patient who developed a discharging sinus at the tip of the coccyx. Extensive examination revealed isolated tuberculosis of the coccyx. Although rare, the condition should be suspected in patients presenting with a chronic sinus in the sacrococcygeal area and a lytic lesion in the coccyx on
We previously reported the long-term results of the cementless Duraloc-Profile total hip arthroplasty (THA) system in a 12- to 15-year follow-up study. In this paper, we provide an update on the clinical and radiological results of a previously reported cohort of patients at 23 to 26 years´ follow-up. Of the 99 original patients (111 hips), 73 patients (82 hips) with a mean age of 56.8 years (21 to 70) were available for clinical and radiological study at a minimum follow-up of 23 years. There were 40 female patients (44 hips) and 33 male patients (38 hips).Aims

The aim of this study was to investigate the local recurrence rate at an extended follow-up in patients following navigated resection of primary pelvic and sacral tumours. This prospective cohort study comprised 23 consecutive patients (nine female, 14 male) who underwent resection of a primary pelvic or sacral tumour, using computer navigation, between 2010 and 2012. The mean age of the patients at the time of presentation was 51 years (10 to 77). The rates of local recurrence and mortality were calculated using the Kaplan–Meier method.Aims

The Walch Type C dysplastic glenoid is characterized by excessive
retroversion. This anatomical study describes its morphology. A total of 29 shoulders with a dysplastic glenoid were analyzed.
CT was used to measure retroversion, inclination, height, width,
radius-of-curvature, surface area, depth, subluxation of the humeral
head and the Goutallier classification of fatty infiltration. The
severity of dysplasia and deficiency of the posterior rim of the
glenoid were recorded.Aims

This study aimed to analyze the correlation between transverse
process (TP) fractures of the fourth (L4) and fifth (L5) lumbar
vertebrae and biomechanical and haemodynamic stability in patients
with a pelvic ring injury, since previous data are inconsistent. The study is a retrospective matched-pair analysis of patients
with a pelvic fracture according to the modified Tile AO Müller
and the Young and Burgess classification who presented to a level
1 trauma centre between January 2005 and December 2014.Aims

The aim of this study was to evaluate cartilaginous patellotrochlear congruence and patellofemoral alignment parameters after deepening trochleoplasty in severe trochlear dysplasia. The study group comprised 20 patients (two male, 18 female; mean age 24 years (16 to 39)) who underwent deepening trochleoplasty and medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction for the treatment of recurrent lateral patellar dislocation due to severe trochlear dysplasia (Dejour type B to D). Pre- and postoperative MRI investigations of the study group were compared with MRI data of 20 age- and gender-matched control patients (two male, 18 female; mean age 27 years (18 to 44)) regarding the patellotrochlear contact ratio, patellotrochlear contact area, posterior patellar edge-trochlear groove ratio, and patellar tilt.Aims
