lengthening osteotomy (CLO) for pes planovalgus in childhood. We present the interim results of ten patients (HATCP, n = 6
and autograft, n = 5) with a mean age of 11.5 years (8.2 to 14.2)
from a randomised controlled non-inferiority trial with six months
follow-up. The primary outcome was the stability of the osteotomy
as measured by radiostereometric analysis. A non-inferiority margin
of ≤ 2 mm osteotomy compression was set.Aims

Aims. The purpose of this systematic review was to determine the rates of union for vascularized versus non-vascularized grafting techniques in the operative management of scaphoid nonunion. Secondary aims were to determine the effect of the fixation techniques used, the source of grafting, as well as the influence of fracture location (proximal pole) and avascular necrosis (AVN). Methods. A search of PubMed, MEDLINE, and Embase was performed in June 2021 using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses statement and registered using the PROSPERO International prospective register of systematic reviews. The primary outcome was union rate. Results. There were 78 studies that met the inclusion criteria with a total of 7,671 patients (87.8% male, 12.2% female). The mean age was 27.9 years (SD 3.8) and the mean follow-up was 30.9 months (SD 25.9). The mean union rate was 88.7% (95% confidence interval (CI) 85.0 to 92.5) for non-vascularized grafts versus 87.5% (95% CI 82.8 to 92.2) for vascularized grafts (p = 0.685). Pooled analysis of trial data alone found a mean union rate of 82.4% (95% CI 66.9% to 97.9%) for non-vascularized grafts and 89.4% (95% CI 84.1% to 94.7%) for vascularized grafts (p = 0.780). No significant difference was observed in union rates between any of the fixation techniques used in the studies (p = 0.502). Distal radius and

Objectives. Nonunion is one of the most troublesome complications to treat
in orthopaedics. Former authors believed that atrophic nonunion
occurred as a result of lack of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). We
evaluated the number and viability of MSCs in site of atrophic nonunion compared
with those in
Aims. Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) can be used in complex cases when the glenoid requires reconstruction. In this study, a baseplate with composite bone autograft and a central trabecular titanium peg was implanted, and its migration was assessed for two years postoperatively using radiostereometric analysis (RSA). Methods. A total of 14 patients who underwent a rTSA with an autograft consented to participate. Of these, 11 had a primary rTSA using humeral head autograft and three had a revision rTSA with autograft harvested from the
Aims. This study aims to report the outcomes in the treatment of unstable proximal third scaphoid nonunions with arthroscopic curettage, non-vascularized bone grafting, and percutaneous fixation. Methods. This was a retrospective analysis of 20 patients. All cases were delayed presentations (n = 15) or failed nonoperatively managed scaphoid fractures (n = 5). Surgery was performed at a mean duration of 27 months (7 to 120) following injury with arthroscopic debridement and arthroscopic
Aims. Fixation of scaphoid nonunion with a volar locking plate and cancellous bone grafting has been shown to be a successful technique in small series. Few mid- or long-term follow-up studies have been reported. The aim of this study was to report the mid-term radiological and functional outcome of plate fixation for scaphoid nonunion. Methods. Patients with a scaphoid nonunion were prospectively enrolled and treated with open reduction using a volar approach, debridement of the nonunion, and fixation using a locking plate and cancellous bone grafting, from the ipsilateral
Objectives. Long bone defects often require surgical intervention for functional restoration. The ‘gold standard’ treatment is autologous bone graft (ABG), usually from the patient’s
Aims. This study compared the long-term results following Salter osteotomy
and Pemberton acetabuloplasty in children with developmental dysplasia
of the hip (DDH). We assessed if there was a greater increase in
pelvic height following the Salter osteotomy, and if this had a
continued effect on pelvic tilt, lumbar curvature or functional outcomes. Patients and Methods. We reviewed 42 children at more than ten years post-operatively
following a unilateral Salter osteotomy or Pemberton acetabuloplasty.
We measured the increase in pelvic height and the

1. A review of the literature on the normal variations in bone mass in a given population in relation to age, sex, nutritional and genetic background shows several lacunae in our knowledge. Consequently, the separation of milder degrees of osteoporosis is difficult and the definition of osteoporosis itself is uncertain. 2. This paper presents a necropsy study to determine variations in the bone mass that occur with age and sex in a normal Indian population in the Delhi area. Two hundred persons between nine months and seventy-six years of age who died by accident and with no evidence of chronic disease were studied. 3. The parameters of bone mass employed were : apparent bone density, ash per millilitre of bone, cortical thickness and visual grading of porosity of bone in macerated specimens. The first lumbar vertebra, the
We have analysed a number of radiological measurements in an attempt to clarify the predisposing factors for degenerative spondylolisthesis of the lumbosacral junction. We identified 57 patients with a slip and a control group of 293 patients without any radiological abnormality apart from age-related changes. The relative thickness of the L5 transverse process, the sacral table angle and the height of the
Objectives. To explore the therapeutic potential of combining bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) and hydroxyapatite (HA) granules to treat nonunion of the long bone. Methods. Ten patients with an atrophic nonunion of a long bone fracture were selectively divided into two groups. Five subjects in the treatment group were treated with the combination of 15 million autologous BM-MSCs, 5g/cm. 3. (HA) granules and internal fixation. Control subjects were treated with
Our aim was to evaluate the results of triple arthrodesis, performed without the use of supplementary bone graft. We carried out a retrospective review of 100 consecutive triple arthrodeses. All the operations had been performed by the senior author (TSS) using a standard technique. Only local bone graft from the excised joint surfaces had been used, thereby avoiding complications at the donor site. The mean age of the patients at surgery was 58 years (18 to 84). The mean time to union was 5.1 months (3 to 17). There were 75 good, 20 fair and five poor results. There were four cases of nonunion. Our study has shown that comparable rates of union are achieved without the need for supplementary bone graft from the

The use of autograft bone is the best option
when undertaking a procedure that requires bone graft because it
is osteogenic, osteoconductive and osseo-inductive. Pain, morbidity
and complications associated with harvesting iliac or non-iliac
sites occur in between 6% and 30% of cases. An alternative source
of graft with possibly a lower morbidity is the intramedullary canal.
In this study, 28 patients undergoing 30 arthrodesis procedures
on the hindfoot had a mean of 48 cm. 3 . (43 to 50) of bone
harvested locally from the hindfoot or the tibial shaft by antegrade or
retrograde reaming. No patient sustained a fracture of the calcaneum,
talus or tibia. There was no morbidity except for one complication
when the reamer breached the medial tibial cortex. This healed uneventfully. . This method of using the reamer–irrigator–aspirator system is
an extension of the standard technique of intramedullary reaming
of the lower limb: it produces good-quality bone graft with viable
growth factors consistent with that of the
