Objectives. Opening wedge high tibial osteotomy (HTO) is an established surgical procedure for the treatment of early-stage knee arthritis. Other than
Aims. Loosening is a well-known complication in the fixation of fractures using devices such as locking plates or unilateral fixators. It is believed that high strains in the bone at the bone-screw interface can initiate loosening, which can result in
To determine whether half-threaded screw holes in a new titanium locking plate design can substantially decrease the notch effects of the threads and increase the plate fatigue life. Three types (I to III) of titanium locking plates were fabricated to simulate plates used in the femur, tibia, and forearm. Two copies of each were fabricated using full- and half-threaded screw holes (called A and B, respectively). The mechanical strengths of the plates were evaluated according to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) F382-14, and the screw stability was assessed by measuring the screw removal torque and bending strength.Aims
Methods
Surgeons and most engineers believe that bone compaction improves implant primary stability without causing undue damage to the bone itself. In this study, we developed a murine distal femoral implant model and tested this dogma. Each mouse received two femoral implants, one placed into a site prepared by drilling and the other into the contralateral site prepared by drilling followed by stepwise condensation.Aims
