The Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has changed all aspects of orthopaedic practice in Durban, South Africa. In our Arthroplasty unit, we have noticed a significant increase in HIV positive patients that required total hip arthroplasty (THR). We conducted a retrospective, demographic chart review of all patients below the age of 55years undergoing primary THR in our unit from 2004 to 2011.Introduction
