Frailty has been shown to be a risk predictor for peri-operative adverse events (AEs) in patients undergoing various type of spine surgery. However, its relationship with Patient Related Outcome Measures (PROMS) remains unknown. The primary objective of this study was to determine the impact of frailty on PROMS in patients undergoing surgery for thoraco-lumbar degenerative conditions. The secondary objective was to determine the association between frailty and baseline PROMS. This is a retrospective study of a prospective cohort of patients >55 years old who underwent surgery between 2012 and 2018. Patient data and PROMS (EQ-5D, SF-12, ODI, back and leg pain NRS) were extracted from the Canadian Spine Outcomes and Research Network registry for a single academic centre. Frailty was retrospectively calculated using the modified frailty index (mFI) and patient were classified as frail, pre-frail and non-frail. Patient characteristics and outcomes were analyzed using ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis test for continuous variables and Chi square or Fisher's exact test for proportions. A generalized estimating equations (GEEs) regression model was used to assess the association between patients' baseline frailty status and PROMs measures at three and 12 months. 293 patients were included with a mean age of 67 ± 7 years. Twenty-two percent of the patients (n= 65) were frail, 59 % (n=172) were pre-frail and 19% (n=56) were non-frail. At baseline, the three groups had similar PROMS, except for the PCS which was worse in the frail group (mean difference [95% CI], −4.9 [−8.6;-1.1], p= 0.0083). The improvement in the EQ-5D, PCS, MCS, ODI, back and leg pain NRS scores was not significantly different between the three groups (p> 0.05). The was no difference in the evolution of the PROMS at three and 12 months between the three groups (p> 0.05). Although frailty is a known predictor of AEs, it does not predict worse PROMS after spine surgery in that population. At baseline, non-frail, pre-frail and frail patients have similar PROMS

One in five patients remain unsatisfied due to ongoing pain and impaired mobility following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). It is important if surgeons can pre-operatively identify which patients may be at risk for poor outcomes after TKA. The purpose of this study was to determine if there is an association between pre-operative measures and post-operative outcomes in patients who underwent TKA.

This study included 28 patients (female = 12 / male = 16, age = 63.6 ± 6.9, BMI = 29.9 ± 7.4 kg/m2) with knee osteoarthritis who were scheduled to undergo TKA. All surgeries were performed by the same surgeon (GD), and a subvastus approach was performed for all patients. Patients visited the gait lab within one-month of surgery and 12 months following surgery. At the gait lab, patients completed the knee injury and osteoarthritis outcome score (KOOS), a timed up and go (TUG), and walking task. Variables of interest included the five KOOS sub-scores (symptoms, pain, activities of daily living, sport & recreation, and quality of life), completion time for the TUG, walking speed, and peak knee biomechanics variables (flexion angle, abduction moment, power absorption). A Pearson's product-moment correlation was run to assess the relationship between pre-operative measures and post-operative outcomes in the TKA patients.

Preliminary analyses showed the relationship to be linear with all variables normally distributed, as assessed by Shapiro-Wilk's test (p > .05), and there were no outliers. There were no statistically significant correlations between any of the pre-operative KOOS sub-scores and any of the post-operative biomechanical outcomes. Pre-operative TUG time had a statistically significant, moderate positive correlation with post-operative peak knee abduction moments [r(14) = .597, p < .001] and peak knee power absorption [r(14) = .498, p = .007], with pre-operative TUG time explaining 36% of the variability in peak knee abduction moment and 25% of the variability in peak knee power absorption. Pre-operative walking speed had a statistically significant, moderate negative correlation with post-operative peak knee abduction moments [r(14) = -.558, p = .002] and peak knee power absorption [r(14) = -.548, p = .003], with pre-operative walking speed explaining 31% of the variability in peak knee abduction moment and 30% of the variability in peak knee power absorption.

Patient reported outcome measures (PROMs), such as the KOOS, do indicate the TKA is generally successful at relieving pain and show an overall improvement. However, their pre-operative values do not correlate with any biomechanical indicators of post-operative success, such as peak knee abduction moment and knee power. Shorter pre-operative TUG times and faster pre-operative walking speeds were correlated with improved post-operative biomechanical outcomes. These are simple tasks surgeons can implement into their clinics to evaluate their patients. Future research should expand these findings to a larger sample size and to determine if other factors, such as surgical approach or implant design, improves patient outcomes.

Introduction

Open fractures are complex injuries associated with substantial morbidity. These injuries are associated with harm to both physical and emotional health as well as preclusion of work, social, and leisure activities. Patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) and health related quality of life are critical indicators of successful rehabilitation following open fracture treatment. This study aimed to measure the PROMs for patients with open lower limb fractures and investigate the relationship with injury severity.

Materials & Methods

A retrospective cohort study was performed at a single major trauma centre in the UK. All adult patients with an open lower limb fracture were eligible for inclusion. Patients were identified through a search of a local Open Fracture Database. Epidemiological, clinical, and fracture classification data were obtained by reviewing case notes. Lower Extremity Function Scale (LEFS) and EQ5-D were used as PROMs and measured by a postal questionnaire, alongside return to employment data.

It has been reported that 60-85% of patients who undergo PAO have concomitant intraarticular pathology that cannot be addressed with PAO alone. Currently, there are limited diagnostic tools to determine which patients would benefit from hip arthroscopy at the time of PAO to address intra-articular pathology. This study aims to see if preoperative PROMs scores measured by IHOT-33 scores have predictive value in whether intra-articular pathology is addressed during PAO + scope. The secondary aim is to see how often surgeons at high-volume hip preservation centers address intra-articular pathology if a scope is performed during the same anesthesia event.

A randomized, prospective Multicenter trial was performed on patients who underwent PAO and hip arthroscopy to treat hip dysplasia from 2019 to 2020. Preoperative PROMs and intraoperative findings and procedures were recorded and analyzed. A total of 75 patients, 84% Female, and 16% male, with an average age of 27 years old, were included in the study. Patients were randomized to have PAO alone 34 patients vs. PAO + arthroscopy 41 patients during the same anesthesia event. The procedures performed, including types of labral procedures and chondroplasty procedures, were recorded. Additionally, a two-sided student T-test was used to evaluate the difference in means of preoperative IHOT score among patients for whom a labral procedure was performed versus no labral procedure.

A total of 82% of patients had an intra-articular procedure performed at the time of hip arthroscopy. 68% of patients who had PAO + arthroscopy had a labral procedure performed. The most common labral procedure was a labral refixation which was performed in 78% of patients who had a labral procedure performed. Femoral head-neck junction chondroplasty was performed in 51% of patients who had an intra-articular procedure performed. The mean IHOT score was 29.3 in patients who had a labral procedure performed and 33.63 in those who did not have a labral procedure performed P- value=0.24.

Our findings demonstrate preoperative IHOT-33 scores were not predictive in determining whether intra-articular labral pathology was addressed at the time of surgery. Additionally, we found that if labral pathology was addressed, labral refixation was the most common repair performed. This study also provides valuable information on what procedures high-volume hip preservation centers are performing when performing PAO + arthroscopy.

Introduction

By utilising the inherent variability achievable with circular frames, surgeons can manage a wide spectrum of complex injuries, and can deal with deformity at multiple levels, in multiple planes. The aim of this study was to assess functional outcomes utilising patients reported outcome measures (PROMs) of patients being treated with circular (Ilizarov) frame fixation for complex lower limb injuries and assess these results in conjunction with the observed postoperative alignment of the patients’ limbs.

Materials & Methods

Cases were identified using a prospectively collected database of adult patients presenting between July 2018 and August 2021. Functional outcomes were assessed using the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Score (AOFAS), the 5-level EQ-5D (EQ5D5L), the Lysholm Knee Scoring Scale (LKSS), the Olerud-Molendar Ankle Score (OMAS), and the Tegner Activity Scale (TAS). Postoperative radiographs were analysed for fracture union and to quantify malunion (as described in Dror Paleys Principles of Deformity Correction).

Little guidance exists in the current literature regarding which patient recorded outcome measures (PROMs) are most clinically appropriate following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL) surgery, and what results surgeons should expect or accept. Many PROMs have been validated, but their “ideal” results have not been published, limiting a surgeon's ability to compare their patients’ outcomes with those of their colleagues.

We undertook a systematic review of PROMs for ACL to look at common usage and outcomes. After appropriate paper selection, we then undertook a pragmatic meta-analysis (i.e., including all papers that fulfilled the selection criteria, regardless of CONSORT status) and calculated weighted mean outcome scores and standard deviations for the most commonly used PROMs.

A comprehensive literature search of all English articles of PubMed and other sources including search terms (‘Patient related outcome measure’ or ‘PROM’) AND ‘anterior cruciate ligament’ (limited to abstract/title) yielded 722 articles. Title review narrowed this to 268, and abstracts review to 151, of which 88 were included in our meta-analysis. Weighted mean and standard deviations were calculated for IKDC, KOOS, Lysholm, Teneger and “VAS Pain” PROMs as the most commonly reported. We identified significant, novel findings relating to selected PROMs and (i) demographics including age, gender and body mass index, (ii) surgical factors including bundle count, strand count, and graft type, and (iii) post operative complications.

We clarified the most commonly used PROMs for ACL, and their weighted means and standard deviations. This will allow surgeons to compare results with colleagues, ensuring they meet international levels of quality in PROMs. We have also updated which patient and operative factors have an impact on PROMs scoring to allow for population variance.

Introduction

There are concerns that patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) currently used for adults requiring, undergoing or after undergoing lower limb reconstruction (LLR) are not adequately capturing the range of experiences important to these patients. The ‘Patient-Reported Outcome Measure for Lower Limb Reconstruction’ (PROLLIT) study developed a conceptual framework of outcomes identified as important and relevant by adult LLR patients. This review explored whether existing PROMs address these outcomes, and exhibit content validity in this population.

Materials & Methods

A range of key PROMs was selected (n=32). Systematic and hand-searches were employed to find studies assessing content validity of these PROMs in the adult LLR population, along with PROM content and development information. A systematic review of content validity of the measures was carried out following ‘COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement Instruments’ (COSMIN) guidance, alongside conceptual mapping of the content of the PROMs against the PROLLIT conceptual framework.

Pathologies such as Scapho-Lunate Advanced Collapse (SLAC), Scaphoid Non-union Advanced Collapse (SNAC) and Kienbock's disease can lead to arthritis in the wrist. Depending on the articular surfaces that are involved, motion preserving surgical procedures can be performed. Proximal Row Carpectomy (PRC) and Four Corner Fusion (4CF) are tried and tested surgical options. However, prospective studies comparing the two methods looking at sufficient sample sizes are limited in the literature.

The purpose of this study was to prospectively compare the early results of PRC vs 4CF performed in a single centre.

Patients with wrist arthritis were prospectively enrolled (2015 to 2021) in a single centre in Vancouver, Canada. Thirty-six patients and a total of 39 wrists underwent either a PRC (n=18) or 4CF (n=21) according to pre-operative clinical, radiographical, and intra-operative assessment. Patient-Rated Wrist Evaluation (PRWE) scores were obtained preoperatively, as well as at six months and one year post operatively. Secondary outcomes were range of motion (ROM) of the wrist, grip strength, reoperation and complication rates. Statistical significance was set at p=0.05

Respectively for PRC and 4CF, the average PRWE scores at baseline were 61.64 (SD=19.62) and 63.67 (SD=20.85). There was significant improvement at the six-month mark to 38.81 (SD=22.95) (p=0.031) and 41.33 (SD=26.61) (p=0.007), then further improvement at the 12month mark to 33.11 (SD=23.42) (p=0.007) and 36.29 (SD=27.25) (p=0.002).

There was no statistical difference between the two groups at any time point.

Regarding ROM, statistical difference was seen in pronation for the PRC group at the 6month mark from an average of 72.18 deg to 61.56 deg and in flexion at the 12 month mark from 47.89 deg to 33.50 deg. All other parameters did not show statistically significant difference post operatively.

For ROM of the 4CF group, only flexion at the 12month mark showed statistically significant change from an average of 48.81 deg to 38.03 deg.

There was no statistical difference in pre-operative ROM between the two groups.

One patient in the 4CF group required a revision for delayed union, and three patients ended up with ulnar sided wrist pain.

Patients undergoing PRC and 4CF showed significant improvement in post operative PRWE scores, this reflects existing literature. For 4CF care must be taken to minimise ulnar sided wrist pain by relatively shortening the unar sided carpal column mass.

ROM analysis showed that patients lost some wrist flexion ROM post-operatively at the 12month mark with both PRC and 4CF. However, other ROM parameters were unchanged

Introduction

Surgical outcome analysis has shifted from surgeon- to patient-reported outcome measures (PROM). High rates of dissatisfaction (13–20%) in PROM after TKA have persisted despite significant advances in pain-management, implant design and introduction of newer surgical techniques. The NAVIO robotic-assisted TKA (RA-TKA) was introduced in May 2017 as an integrative approach to planning, execution and evaluation in TKA surgery.

The goal of this study was to assess differences PROM scores between conventional instrumented TKA (CI-TKA) and RA-TKA.

Methods

Starting in December 2016, prospective data collection of PROM's was initiated in a single-surgeon total joint arthroplasty registry. The Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) was collected for all patients pre-operatively, at three months and at one year post-operatively.

In Group A, from December 2016 through May 2017, patients were treated with CI-TKA instrumentation. In Group B, from June 2017 through December 2018, surgery was performed with the NAVIO RA-TKA technique.

The Journey II total knee prosthesis was used for all cases. Peri-operative management was consistent for all patients in both groups.

The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have partnered to advance international patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) collection and reporting standards for hip and knee arthroplasty. This project is part of the OECD's Patient-Reported Indicator Survey (PaRIS) initiative, which aims to address the need for internationally comparable patient-reported outcome and experience measures in order to better monitor health system performance and drive continuous improvement. PROMs are in varying stages of implementation across OECD health systems, with differences in collection and reporting practices across existing programs.

CIHI and the OECD are leading an international working group for PROMs in hip and knee replacement surgery in order to build consensus on PROMs data collection standards and develop indicators for international reporting. Working group members include patient representatives, clinicians, national arthroplasty registries, the International Society of Arthroplasty Registries (ISAR), experts in PROMs measurement, and government representatives of several OECD member countries. Activities of the working group focus on two main priorities: 1) Use existing PROMs programs to maximize pilot comparable reporting in OECD's Health at a Glance 2019 report, and 2) Advance new PROMs standards and data collection to maximize comparable reporting beyond Health at a Glance 2019.

An environmental scan of PROMs in hip and knee arthroplasty found that a number of countries are collecting this data, however, there are variations in survey instruments as well as administration and reporting methods within and across countries. As part of priority 1, the working group has achieved consensus on a number of aspects around pilot reporting. The project is compiling data from existing PROMs programs in order to report results in the Health at a Glance 2019 publication.

For priority 2, the most notable challenge is establishing an agreement across countries on common survey tools, as well as a minimum data set that works for all, given the disparities of existing collection across countries. Many international programs lack the flexibility to change PROMs tools or collections methods, and have concerns regarding the break in trend for PROMs data within their own countries if they were to change methods. The project is exploring the use of crosswalks and other opportunities for comparable reporting, such as the use of single-item anchor questions. To date, the working group continues to develop consensus on international standards for PROMs collection and reporting. Results of the international consensus building and work to date will be shared.

PROMs incorporate the patient's perspective into the delivery of treatments and care – such as hip and knee arthroplasty – that aim to improve a patient's quality of life. Alignment of standards in PROMs collection across countries will make comparable data available for reporting, in order to inform quality improvement initiatives within health systems to provide better care for patients. CIHI and the OECD will continue to work with member countries to develop international data collection and reporting standards for PROMs, and encourage the adoption of common approaches across countries.

Introduction. Most studies now use Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMS) as the preferred and only method for assessing ‘functional outcome’ following surgery. It is thought that these questionnaires accurately reflect the patient's pain and physical function. We hypothesised that comprehensive functional examination would therefore correlate strongly with PROMS following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Methods. We prospectively assessed the function of 100 consecutive knee replacement patients, pre-operatively, then at 8, 26 and 52 weeks post-operatively. PROMS employed were the Oxford Knee Score (OKS) and the Short Form-36. Additionally, leg strength (Leg Extensor Power Rig(tm)), a validated battery of timed functional tasks (Aggregated Locomotor Function, ALF) and pain scores (numerical rating scale) were also assessed. Statistical analysis was performed using the Minitab version 15 software. Level of significance was set as p = < 0.05. Results. Seven patients were lost to follow-up, leaving 93 data sets available for analysis. All of the individual outcome measures showed statistically significant improvement between each of the assessment periods (paired sample t-test, p = < 0.05). Strong correlation was observed between the two PROMS (r = 0.74). Comparatively small correlations were identified between the PROMS and physical assessments (r = < 0.41). The pain scores correlated modestly well with the OKS (r = 0.61) but comparatively poorly with the physical assessments (r = < 0.37). Conclusion. PROMS correlate well with pain, but less well with function following TKA. These results suggest that PROMS may not fully represent actual physical function, but rather the patient's perception of their function. With the advancement of PROMS as the prime outcome measure of most studies, it is important to acknowledge that the assessment provided may be incomplete and, though a useful means of assessing large cohorts, their limitation in assessing functional outcome should be recognised

The aim of this study was to determine the floor and ceiling effects for both the QuickDASH and PRWE following a fracture of the distal radius. Secondary aims were to determine the degree to which patients with a floor or ceiling effect felt that their wrist was ‘normal’, and if there were patient factors associated with achieving a floor or ceiling effect.

A retrospective cohort study of patients sustaining a distal radius fracture and managed at the study centre during a single year was undertaken. Outcome measures included the QuickDASH, the PRWE, EuroQol-5 Dimension-3 Levels (EQ-5D-3L), and the normal wrist score.

There were 526 patients with a mean age of 65yrs (20–95) and 421 (77%) were female. Most patients were managed non-operatively (73%, n=385). The mean follow-up was 4.8yrs (4.3–5.5). A ceiling effect was observed for both the QuickDASH (22.3%) and PRWE (28.5%). When defined to be within the minimum clinical important difference of the best available score, the ceiling effect increased to 62.8% for the QuickDASH and 60% for the PRWE. Patients that achieved a ceiling score for the QuickDASH and PRWE subjectively felt their wrist was only 91% and 92% normal, respectively. On logistic regression analysis, a dominant hand injury and better health-related quality of life were the common factors associated with achieving a ceiling score for both the QuickDASH and PRWE (all p<0.05).

The QuickDASH and PRWE demonstrate ceiling effects when used to assess the outcome of fractures of the distal radius. Patients achieving ceiling scores did not consider their wrist to be ‘normal’. Future patient-reported outcome assessment tools for fractures of the distal radius should aim to limit the ceiling effect, especially for individuals or groups that are more likely to achieve a ceiling score.

In light of recent regulatory initiatives, medical devices now require additional clinical evidence to prove their safety and efficacy. At the same time, patients' own assessment of their devices' function and performance has gained in importance. The collection of these data allows for a more comprehensive picture of clinical outcomes and complications following total knee arthroplasty (TKA).

These trends have led researchers to search for new methods of acquiring, interpreting and disseminating patient-reported outcome measurements (PROMs). The current study assesses the feasibility of a digital platform for collecting PROMs that was recently adapted for TKA patients. It sought to determine patient engagement, survey completion rates, and satisfaction with this platform.

Eighty-two patients (mean age, 63.7 years, 59% females) scheduled for TKA were enrolled from one US and six UK sites between January 12, 2018 and April 30, 2018. Patients were supplied with a mobile application (app) that collects a variety of PROMs, including four domains based on the Patient-Reported Outcome Information System (PROMIS™): physical function, depression, pain interference and pain behavior. The platform electronically administers questionnaires using computer-adaptive tests (CATs), which reduce the burden on patients by tailoring follow-up questions to account for their previous answers. Satisfaction with the app was assessed in subset of patients who evaluated its ease-of-use (n=45), likelihood that they would recommend it to family/friends (n=35), and whether they successfully used the information it provided during their recovery (n=31). These scores were taken on a 1 to 10 (worst to best) scale.

Patients demonstrated regular engagement with the platform, with 73% using the app at least once a week. Weekly engagement remained high throughout the seven-week post-operative period (Figure 1). There was a 69% completion rate of all PROMIS™ CAT surveys during the study. The four PROMIS™ CAT domains had similar survey completion rates (Figure 2). The subset of patients queried regarding their satisfaction with the app gave it favorable mean scores for ease-of-use (8.8), likelihood to recommend to a family member or friend (8.1), and their success at using its information to improve their recovery (7.4).

Initial results support this digital platform's potential for successfully and efficiently collecting large volumes of PROMs. Patients reported high levels of engagement and satisfaction.

Researchers and clinicians measuring outcomes following total ankle replacement (TAR) are challenged by the wide range of outcome measures used in the literature without consensus as to which are valid, reliable, and responsive in this population. This review identifies region- or joint-specific outcome measures used for evaluating TAR outcomes and synthesises evidence for their measurement properties.

A standard search strategy was conducted of electronic databases MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL (to June 2015) to identify foot/ankle measures in use. A best evidence synthesis approach was taken to critically appraise measurement properties [COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN)] of identified measures. The review was restricted to English publications and excluded cross-cultural adaptations. Measurement properties collected from each article were coded for validity, reliability, responsiveness, or interpretability. Clinimetric evidence exists for identified measures tested in non-TAR populations, but were not the focus of this review.

The search identified 14 studies to include in the best evidence synthesis with 32 articles providing clinimetric evidence for eight of the measures (one CBO, seven PRO), however only five measures were tested in a TAR population (Foot Function Index, Ankle Osteoarthritis Scale, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society Ankle-Hindfoot Scale [AOFAS], Foot and Ankle Outcome Score, Self-Reported Foot and Ankle Score). Five studies provided clinimetric evidence in a TAR population and their methodological quality was assessed: (1) Validity—two good quality studies examining different measures provide moderate evidence supporting construct validity (FFI, AOS, AOFAS self-reported items; SEFAS); (2) Reliability—two good quality studies examining different measures provide moderate evidence supporting internal consistency and test-retest reliability (FFI, AOS, AOFAS self-reported items; FAOS, SEFAS); (3) Responsiveness—three poor quality studies, thus unknown evidence for responsiveness; (4) Interpretability—two studies provide interpretability values (AOS, FFI, AOFAS self-reported items; AOS).

This review offers a basis for choosing the most appropriate instrument for evaluating TAR outcomes. Numerous outcome measures were identified with evidence supporting their use in populations with various foot/ankle conditions, but none have strong evidence supporting use in a TAR population. Measures must have adequate clinimetric properties in all patient groups in which they are applied. Evidence supporting or critiquing an instrument should not be based on studies with poor quality methodology, as identified by this review. Further testing in a TAR population would benefit identified measures with emphasis on adequate sample sizes, testing a priori hypotheses, and evaluating their content validity for a TAR population.

Aim

We report the results of 60 patients who were assessed using the Oxford Hip Score following surgery for revision of ASL XL and ASR Resurfacing systems at our institution. We included preoperative metal ion levels, surgical approach, revision implant, and post op histology and complications to determine variables for improved outcomes.

Methods

We performed a retrospective review of consecutive series patients who underwent revision surgery between 2007 – 2015. We collected and analysed data from 60 patients regarding time between surgery, surgical technique including approach and anaesthesia, estimated blood loss (EBL), revision implant, post op complications, histology, and length of post-operative stay. We correlated these findings to the patients reported outcomes measures using the Oxford Hip Score, which were obtained by post.

Purpose

Despite total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a successful surgical procedure with end-stage knee osteoarthritis, approximately 20% of the patients who underwent primary TKA were still dissatisfied with the outcome. Thereby, numerous literatures have confirmed the relationship between soft tissue balancing and clinical result to improve this pressing issue. Recently, there has been an increased research interest in patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) after TKA. However, there is little agreement on the association between soft tissue balancing and PROMs. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine whether intraoperative soft tissue balancing affected PROMs after primary TKA. We hypothesized that soft tissue balancing would be a predictive factor for postoperative PROMs at one-year post-surgery.

Patients and Methods

The study included 20 knees treated for a varus osteoarthritic deformity using a cruciate-retaining TKA (Scorpio NRG) with a polyethylene insert thickness of 8 mm retrospectively. Following the osteotomy using the measured resection technique, the extension gap was measured with a femoral trial by using an electric tensor. This instrument could estimate the soft tissue balance applying continuous distraction force simultaneously from 0 to 40 lbf with an accuracy of the 0.1 lbf.

We evaluated the association between a distraction force required for an extension gap of 8 mm, and the following potentially affected factors at one year postoperatively: knee flexion angle using a protractor with one degree increments; radiographic parameters of component alignment, namely the femoral and tibial component medial angle; and the Japanese Knee Osteoarthritis Measure (JKOM). This is a disease-specific and self-administered questionnaire, reflecting the specificity of the Japanese cultural lifestyle, consisting of 25 items scored from 0 to 100 points, with 100 points being worst.

Introduction

Patients-reported outcome measures (PROMs) have been reported as the important methods to evaluate clinical outcomes in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The patient satisfaction score in Knee Society Score (KSS-2011) has been used in the recent literatures. Patient satisfaction was subjective parameter, and would be affected by multiple factors including psychological factors and physical conditions at not only affected joint but also elsewhere in the body. The question was raised regarding the consistency of patient satisfaction score in KSS-2011 to other PROMs.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation of patient satisfaction in KSS-2011 to other categories in KSS-2011 and to other PROMs including Forgotten Joint Score (FJS-12), EuroQol-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) and 25-questions in Geriatric Locomotive Function Scale (GLFS-25).

Material & Method

83 patients over 65 years old with osteoarthritic knees were involved in this study. All patients underwent CR-TKAs (Persona CRR). The means and ranges of demographics were as follows: age; 74.5 years old (65–89), Hip-Knee-Ankle (HKA) angle; 12.4 (−6.2–22.5) in varus. We asked patients to fulfill the questionnaire including KSS-2011, FJS-12, EQ-5D and GLFS-25 at 1-year postoperative follow-up visit. KSS-2011 consisted of 4 categories of questions; patient satisfaction (PS), symptoms, patient expectations (PE), functional activities (FA).

We evaluated the correlation of PS to other PROMs using simple linear regression analyses (p<0.001).

Aim

Bone and joint infections are a serious complication of trauma, surgery and soft tissue infections. However, there are few data presenting patient reported outcome measures for osteomyelitis. A recently proposed method for classification of osteomyelitis, BACH, stratifies patients into ‘uncomplicated’ and ‘complex’, based on four key inter-disciplinary components: Bone involvement, Anti-microbial options, soft-tissue Coverage and Host status. We aim to correlate the classification severity with patient reported outcomes following osteomyelitis surgery.

Method

Seventy-one patients with long-bone osteomyelitis, confirmed using a validated composite protocol, were included. Patients received a single-stage procedure at a specialist bone infection unit. Euro-Qol EQ-5D-3L questionnaires and Visual Analogue Scores (VAS) (0–100) were collected prospectively at baseline, 14 days, 6 weeks, 4 months and 1 year post-operatively. The EQ-5D-3L index score, a composite measure of performance of daily activities, was calculated from the 5 domains of the EQ-5D-3L. BACH was applied retrospectively by two independent clinicians blinded to all patient outcomes.


Introduction

Schatzker V & VI tibial plateau fractures are serious life-changing injuries often resulting in significant complications including post-traumatic arthritis. Reported incidence of secondary TKA following ORIF of all tibial plateau fractures is 7.3% and 13% for Schatzker V & VI tibial. This study reports a 15-year single centre experience of CEF of Schatzker V & VI fractures including PROMs and incidence of secondary TKA. This study was approved by the local Institutional board.

Materials & Methods

All patients from 2007 – 2022 with Schatzker V or VI fractures treated with CEF were identified from a departmental limb reconstruction registry and included in this retrospective study. Patients’ demographics were collected from electronic institutional patient system. Further data was collected for secondary intervention, adverse events, and alignment at discharge. All deceased patients at the time of the study were excluded.

Each participant completed a questionnaire about secondary intervention, EQ-5D-3L and Oxford Knee Score (OKS).

Purpose

To examine measurement properties of four disability outcomes in patients with advanced osteoarthritis of the glenohumeral joint.

Methods

This was a prospective longitudinal study of patients with advanced osteoarthritis of the glenohumeral joint who underwent a Total Shoulder Arthroplasty (TSA) and were followed for 6 months. Four measures [Western Ontario Osteoarthritis Shoulder (WOOS) Index, the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) assessment, Constant-Murley score (CMS), and Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (QuickDASH)] were completed 2-3 weeks before surgery and at 6 months after surgery.
