Objectives. The purpose of this study was to clarify the appearance of the reparative tissue on the articular surface and to analyse the properties of the reparative tissue after hemicallotasis osteotomy (HCO) using MRI T1ρ and T2 mapping. Methods. Coronal T1ρ and T2 mapping and
High failure rates of metal-on-metal hip arthroplasty implants have highlighted the need for more careful introduction and monitoring of new implants and for the evaluation of the safety of medical devices. The National Joint Registry and other regulatory services are unable to detect failing implants at an early enough stage. We aimed to identify validated surrogate markers of long-term outcome in patients undergoing primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). We conducted a systematic review of studies evaluating surrogate markers for predicting long-term outcome in primary THA. Long-term outcome was defined as revision rate of an implant at ten years according to National Institute of Health and Care Excellence guidelines. We conducted a search of Medline and Embase (OVID) databases. Separate search strategies were devised for the Cochrane database and Google Scholar. Each search was performed to include articles from the date of their inception to June 8, 2015.Objectives

Initial stability of tibial trays is crucial for long-term success of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in both primary and revision settings. Rotating platform (RP) designs reduce torque transfer at the tibiofemoral interface. We asked if this reduced torque transfer in RP designs resulted in subsequently reduced micromotion at the cemented fixation interface between the prosthesis component and the adjacent bone. Composite tibias were implanted with fixed and RP primary and revision tibial trays and biomechanically tested under up to 2.5 kN of axial compression and 10° of external femoral component rotation. Relative micromotion between the implanted tibial tray and the neighbouring bone was quantified using high-precision digital image correlation techniques. Objectives
Methods
The objective of this study was to evaluate the rotation and
translation of each joint in the hindfoot and compare the load response
in healthy feet with that in stage II posterior tibial tendon dysfunction
(PTTD) flatfoot by analysing the reconstructive three-dimensional
(3D) computed tomography (CT) image data during simulated weight-bearing. CT scans of 15 healthy feet and 15 feet with stage II PTTD flatfoot
were taken first in a non-weight-bearing condition, followed by
a simulated full-body weight-bearing condition. The images of the
hindfoot bones were reconstructed into 3D models. The ‘twice registration’
method in three planes was used to calculate the position of the
talus relative to the calcaneus in the talocalcaneal joint, the
navicular relative to the talus in talonavicular joint, and the cuboid
relative to the calcaneus in the calcaneocuboid joint. Objective

The December 2013 Spine Roundup360 looks at: Just how common is lumbar spinal stenosis?; How much will they bleed?; C5 palsy associated with stenosis; Atlanto-axial dislocations revisited; 3D predictors of progression in scoliosis; No difference in outcomes by surgical approach for fusion; Cervical balance changes after thoracolumbar surgery; and spinal surgeons first in space.
The June 2013 Research Roundup360 looks at: a contact patch to rim distance and metal ions; the matrix of hypoxic cartilage; CT assessment of early fracture healing; Hawthornes and radiographs; cardiovascular mortality and fragility fractures; and muscle strength decline preceding OA changes.
A comprehensive study of osteology remains a cornerstone of current orthopaedic and traumatological education. Osteology was already established as an important part of surgical education by the 16. th. century. In order to teach anatomy and osteology, the corpses of executed criminals were dissected by the praelector anatomiae of the Amsterdam Guild of Surgeons. Magnificent anatomical atlases preserve the knowledge obtained from these dissections. We present an overview of the most authoritative works of Vesalius, Bidloo, Cheselden, and Albinus authored in the 16. th. , 17. th. and 18. th. centuries. At that time a knowledge of osteology was necessary to pass the ‘master-exam’ in order to become a surgeon, and anatomical teaching was traditionally based on the practice of dissection. In the modern era, anatomical dissection and illustrations are largely being replaced by
Metal-on-metal (MoM) hip resurfacing was introduced into clinical
practice because it was perceived to be a better alternative to
conventional total hip replacement for young and active patients.
However, an increasing number of reports of complications have arisen
focusing on design and orientation of the components, the generation
of metallic wear particles and serum levels of metallic ions. The
procedure introduced a combination of two elements: large-dimension
components and hard abrasive particles of metal wear. The objective
of our study was to investigate the theory that microseparation
of the articular surfaces draws in a high volume of bursal fluid
and its contents into the articulation, and at relocation under
load would generate high pressures of fluid ejection, resulting
in an abrasive water jet. This theoretical concept using MoM resurfacing components (head
diameter 55 mm) was modelled mathematically and confirmed experimentally
using a material-testing machine that pushed the head into the cup
at a rate of 1000 mm/min until fully engaged.Objectives

This study aims to assess the correlation of CT-based structural
rigidity analysis with mechanically determined axial rigidity in
normal and metabolically diseased rat bone. A total of 30 rats were divided equally into normal, ovariectomized,
and partially nephrectomized groups. Cortical and trabecular bone
segments from each animal underwent micro-CT to assess their average
and minimum axial rigidities using structural rigidity analysis.
Following imaging, all specimens were subjected to uniaxial compression
and assessment of mechanically-derived axial rigidity. Objectives
