The Attune total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has been used in over 600 000 patients worldwide. Registry data show good clinical outcome; however, concerns over the cement-tibial interface have been reported. We used retrieval analysis to give further insight into this controversial topic. We examined 12 titanium (Ti) PFC Sigma implants, eight cobalt-chromium (CoCr) PFC Sigma implants, eight cobalt-chromium PFC Sigma rotating platform (RP) implants, and 11 Attune implants. We used a peer-reviewed digital imaging method to quantify the amount of cement attached to the backside of each tibial tray. We then measured: 1) the size of tibial tray thickness, tray projections, peripheral lips, and undercuts; and 2) surface roughness (Ra) on the backside and keel of the trays. This study aimed to evaluate the histological and mechanical features of tendon healing in a rabbit model with second-harmonic-generation (SHG) imaging and tensile testing. A total of eight male Japanese white rabbits were used for this study. The flexor digitorum tendons in their right leg were sharply transected, and then were repaired by intratendinous stitching. At four weeks post-operatively, the rabbits were killed and the flexor digitorum tendons in both right and left legs were excised and used as specimens for tendon healing (n = 8) and control (n = 8), respectively. Each specimen was examined by SHG imaging, followed by tensile testing, and the results of the two testing modalities were assessed for correlation.Objectives

Thermal stability is a key property in determining the suitability of an antibiotic agent for local application in the treatment of orthopaedic infections. Despite the fact that long-term therapy is a stated goal of novel local delivery carriers, data describing thermal stability over a long period are scarce, and studies that avoid interference from specific carrier materials are absent from the orthopaedic literature. In this study, a total of 38 frequently used antibiotic agents were maintained at 37°C in saline solution, and degradation and antibacterial activity assessed over six weeks. The impact of an initial supplementary heat exposure mimicking exothermically curing bone cement was also tested as this material is commonly used as a local delivery vehicle. Antibiotic degradation was assessed by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, or by immunoassays, as appropriate. Preservation of both anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) can lead to near-normal post-operative joint mechanics and improved knee function. We hypothesised that a patient-specific bicruciate-retaining prosthesis preserves near-normal kinematics better than standard off-the-shelf posterior cruciate-retaining and bicruciate-retaining prostheses in TKA. We investigated the effects on fracture healing of two up-regulators of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in a rat model of an open femoral osteotomy: tadalafil, a phosphodiesterase inhibitor, and the recently reported nutraceutical, COMB-4 (consisting of L-citrulline, Paullinia cupana, ginger and muira puama), given orally for either 14 or 42 days. Unilateral femoral osteotomies were created in 58 male rats and fixed with an intramedullary compression nail. Rats were treated daily either with vehicle, tadalafil or COMB-4. Biomechanical testing of the healed fracture was performed on day 42. The volume, mineral content and bone density of the callus were measured by quantitative CT on days 14 and 42. bone cement (ALBC) loaded with powdered antibiotic, powdered antibiotic

Lengthening osteotomies of the calcaneus in children are in general
grafted with bone from the iliac crest. Artificial bone grafts have
been introduced, however, their structural and clinical durability
has not been documented. Radiostereometric analysis (RSA) is a very
accurate and precise method for measurements of rigid body movements including
the evaluation of joint implant and fracture stability, however,
RSA has not previously been used in clinical studies of calcaneal
osteotomies. We assessed the precision of RSA as a measurement tool
in a lateral calcaneal lengthening osteotomy (LCLO). LCLO was performed in six fixed adult cadaver feet. Tantalum
markers were inserted on each side of the osteotomy and in the cuboideum.
Lengthening was done with a plexiglas wedge. A total of 24 radiological
double examinations were obtained. Two feet were excluded due to
loose and poorly dispersed markers. Precision was assessed as systematic
bias and 95% repeatability limits.Objectives

The treatment of osteochondral lesions and osteoarthritis
remains an ongoing clinical challenge in orthopaedics. This review
examines the current research in the fields of cartilage regeneration,
osteochondral defect treatment, and biological joint resurfacing, and
reports on the results of clinical and pre-clinical studies. We
also report on novel treatment strategies and discuss their potential
promise or pitfalls. Current focus involves the use of a scaffold
providing mechanical support with the addition of chondrocytes or mesenchymal
stem cells (MSCs), or the use of cell homing to differentiate the
organism’s own endogenous cell sources into cartilage. This method
is usually performed with scaffolds that have been coated with a
chemotactic agent or with structures that support the sustained
release of growth factors or other chondroinductive agents. We also
discuss unique methods and designs for cell homing and scaffold
production, and improvements in biological joint resurfacing. There
have been a number of exciting new studies and techniques developed
that aim to repair or restore osteochondral lesions and to treat
larger defects or the entire articular surface. The concept of a
